2015 Leadership Academy Starts Wed. Sept. 30th! 
The City of Oakley is inviting residents to participate in the 2015 Leadership Academy. The Academy is a free, interactive civic education program designed to provide those who live and work in Oakley with a breadth of background and knowledge of the intricacies of City operations and processes. The purpose of the Academy is to provide an interesting perspective into the working of Oakley, to develop civic leadership, and to build a stronger community through well-informed and engaged residents.

Participants will meet for seven evening sessions, each two hours in length beginning at 6:30 p.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m. Each session will focus on a specific element of city government through an engaging presentation and discussion facilitated by top City staff. The academy will meet for the first time on Wednesday, September 30th and thereafter twice a month on the first and third Tuesdays of each month through December 1st and concluding with a graduation on December 8, 2015.

Seeking Applicants to Fill Seat on Council on Aging 
The City of Oakley is accepting applications to fill a seat on the Contra Costa County Advisory Council for the next two-year term, October 12, 2015 through October 11, 2017. The application deadline is Friday, September 11, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. Applications will be considered by the Oakley City Council on September 22, 2015 at its regularly scheduled meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. Applicants are encouraged to attend and may be interviewed.

Free Mulch Available Saturday, Sept 12th    
Wood chips will once again be available for pick-up on Saturday, September 12th from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at the City Yard at the corner of Neroly Road and Main Street (entrance on Neroly). Residents need to bring their own tools/shovels and bags/containers to load and carry the mulch, and a tarp to cover, if necessary. 
Downtown Traffic Signal Synchronization Project  
The City of Oakley has secured grant funding to perform a traffic signal timing synchronization project. This project will include Main Street intersections at O'Hara Avenue, Vintage Parkway, Empire Avenue as well as the intersection of Oakley Road at Empire Avenue. The project will evaluate the existing design of the traffic signal timing at these intersections and make adjustments needed to optimize the traffic flows, providing direct connections so the traffic signal will be synchronized and operate at full capacity and efficiency. This project will start in September and is anticipated to be completed and fully implemented by Spring 2016.

Sergeants:
Under direction of a Police Lieutenant and/or the Police Chief, Sergeants will supervise, assign, review, and participates in the work of law enforcement staff. A sergeant assumes responsibility for assigned collateral services, special programs, projects, or department-wide functions or activities; coordinates activities with other divisions, units, watches, City Departments, outside agencies, organizations, and the public. Additionally, they will perform a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility. The Sergeant is an "in-the-field" supervisor.

Lieutenants:
The Police Lieutenant reports to the Police Chief and is considered a Division Manager with responsibility for the management of a Division that includes several line areas/sections or functional work groups of significant depth and complexity. Responsibilities include overall administration and implementation of a Division including development of Division objectives and design and implementation of supporting units, programs, processes, policies, and/or procedures to successfully achieve those objectives. As a Division Manager, there is also responsibility for the development, administration, and control of the associated budget(s). This classification is distinguished from the classification of Police Sergeant by the performance of highly responsible and complex department-wide management duties.
