City of Oakley & PG&E to Collaborate on Luminous New Additions

The City of Oakley and Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) have announced a collaborative effort to convert approximately 2,000 non-decorative PG&E-owned streetlights to energy efficient and longer lasting light emitting diode (LED) fixtures. PG&E installations began this week and will continue through the end of the month.

"We are proud to work with the City of Oakley to brighten the community with LED streetlights. These innovative streetlights not only promote sustainability and energy efficiency, but also public safety," said Vic Baker, Diablo Division senior manager for PG&E.

Oakley Residents Offered Free Wood Chips to Help with Drought

Need some wood chips/mulch for your landscaping? The City of Oakley and Diablo Water District have teamed with West Coast Arborists, Inc. (WCA) to offer free wood chips that can be spread as mulch, around trees and shrubs.

The wood chips are from trees pruned and/or removed from the Oakley/Brentwood area. The chips are organic and coarse, and mixed with leaves and twigs, and the quality varies. It is not comparable to the commercial bark products you purchase from a landscape store, but provide the same benefits - retains moisture in the soil (minimizes evaporation), discourages grass and weeds from growing, protects roots from extreme cold or heat, reduces soil compactions, and slowly decomposes and releases nutrients into the soil.

Public Works Department Hosts Elementary Students

This past Wednesday, over 250 elementary students from Vintage Parkway and Oakley Elementary School, as well as some home schooled students got an up close look and explanation of the Public Works operations in Oakley! They learned about our Staff members' contributions to Streets & Traffic, Storm Drainage, Engineering, and Parks.

At the end of the day, each kiddo took home a goodie bag which included a little Oak tree to practice a little bit of the day's learnings at home.

Kudos to the Oakley Staff that is doing a great job planning, building, managing, and operating the infrastructure in the community, and still made it a priority to share their work with students.
