Just Serve- Helping Hands Service Opportunity Tomorrow 

Tomorrow, Saturday, April 25th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. there will be a Just Serve-Helping Hands service project held at Big Break Marina in Oakley (69 Big Break Way). Volunteers will be sanding and painting fences and the outdoor amphitheater, as well as raking, weeding, cleaning, and beautifying the natural landscape areas.  Please bring your own hat, gloves, rakes, brooms, weeding tools, paintbrushes, rollers and extensions, hip waders, and a bottle of water.  Drinking fountains are also available.  There will be a thank you luncheon at the end of the work day.

Recreation Division Now Hiring!

Are you a youth looking for a summer job? The City of Oakley is now hiring Recreation Aides, Recreation Leaders, and Lifeguards. Applications are due Thursday, April 30th. 

 

Recreation Leader:

Some of the duties will range from leading participants in arts and crafts, sports, games, homework tutorials, and recreational activities, answering questions from the public, helping to plan and coordinate events, assist with set up as well as serving as a role model. Among the primary requirements are that you be 18 years of age or older, have a driver's license, available to work nights and evenings and can lift 50 pounds or more. Interested?

Recreation Aide:

Recreation Aides are needed to assist with our Youth Development Programs. These programs include the Summer Blaze Day Camp, After-School Program, field trips, special events and family programs for Oakley residents. Key requirements include being 16 years of age of older, ability to follow written and oral instructions and an ability to work cooperatively with participants, staff, large and small groups, various age groups in a positive and constructive manner.

Recreation Lifeguard:

Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of summer camp swimmers from Summer Blaze and Youth CORE. They ensure safety by maintaining constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; clearly and professionally conveying and enforcing rules to patrons. Lifeguards are required to maintain the following certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for Lifeguards; must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

Oakley Receives Grant to Evaluate Traffic Flow Near Schools 

The City of Oakley applied for and has received an SR2S Technical Assistance Grant by Contra Costa Transportation Authority of $15,000! This grant program is for municipalities to use for evaluating and identifying solutions to address traffic flow and pedestrian safety concerns around school sites.

 

As part of this grant program, City staff will work collaboratively with the transportation consultant selected by Contra Costa Transportation Authority to analyze and evaluate traffic flow problems and prepare designs that go towards addressing the traffic problems faced at each site. This task will include the evaluation of traffic flows and pedestrian safety at: Orchard Park School (Live Oak Avenue) and Vintage Parkway School (Vintage Parkway). The work on this project is anticipated to begin in May 2015 and conclude by September 2015.

Taste of Oakley Tickets on Sale!  

Reminder! The City of Oakley will host the Taste of Oakley event on Saturday, May 30th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at City Hall. This new event will feature various Oakley-based restaurants and caterers who will be serving a dish from their menu for guests to sample. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy different cuisines or perhaps sample dishes that they may never think to order. Participating restaurants include:

Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award   

The Oakley Youth Advisory Council would like to celebrate youth who make a positive impact in Oakley! The 2015 Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award is for middle or high school students who live in the City of Oakley and volunteer in Oakley or the surrounding east county communities. If you know of a young person who has done volunteer work despite a challenging personal circumstance or may have done work that was really helpful or unique, please fill out the nomination form and return it by May 5th. Social Media for Small Business Owners   

Do you find social media to be a challenge, but need help understanding it to grow your business? Look no further.  On Wednesday, May 6th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. the City of Oakley will hold a two-hour workshop to help you better understand and ask questions about the complex world of social media. The workshop will take place at City Hall, located at 3231 Main St. and will cover: the most important social networks for your business and brand, and practical do's and don'ts, including:

  • How to create shareable content with your customers (articles, blogs, photographs)
  • How to build a lasting relationship with your customers
  • Customer service reports, etc.

The workshop will be presented by John Smulo, owner of Purple Cow Agency based in San Jose and Brentwood. There is a fee of $20.00 if you pre-register, or $25.00 at the door (cash or check only).
