Protect your files from ransomware

Ransomware has become one of the most notorious cyber threats. Once a ransomware Trojan infiltrates your system, it stealthily encrypts your files, including your valuable documents, videos and photos. This entire process runs in the background so the victim is not aware of the problem until it's too late.
When done with its dirty business, the Trojan informs the user that their files are encrypted.

What makes ransomware a particularly vicious scam is that the encrypted files being held ransom are still being stored on the user's computer. This unto itself is a very sad and frustrating reality as the files are not retrievable without the unique encryption key.
It is becoming obvious that ransomware is a big issue that Internet users should pay more attention to in order to preventing infection. After all, it is much harder to deal with the consequences afterwards.

Tips:
Make sure that you back up your important files regularly.
Cybercriminals often distribute fake email messages mimicking email notifications from an online store or a bank, luring a user to click on a malicious link and distribute malware. This method is called phishing. With that in mind, fine-tune your antispam settings and never open attachments sent by an unknown sender.
Trust no one, literally.

Malicious links can be sent by your friends on social media, your colleague or online gaming partner whose accounts have been compromised in one way or another.
Regularly update your operating system, browser, antivirus and other programs. Culprits tend to exploit vulnerabilities in software to compromise systems.
Use a robust antivirus program to protect your system from ransomware.
If you are unlucky to have your files encrypted, don't pay the ransom, unless the instant access to some of your files is critical. In fact, each payment fuels this unlawful business which would prosper as long as you pay money.

A Message from
CEO Marcia Fowler

I want to wish the entire Bournewood staff and community a very happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year.

As we look ahead, 2016 holds much promise for Bournewood Health Systems. Many of you have heard me talk about the strategic planning process underway that will set the course for our direction and growth.

We can be very proud of what we have achieved in creating a well-respected hospital that delivers excellent behavioral health and addiction treatment. We have a 132-year history of continuous operation as a solid foundation for an exciting future of growth and expansion.

Bournewood is in the process of establishing a strategic communications plan, launching a new website, and exploring the development of a new adult partial hospitalization program. A staff and patient safety initiative will take top priority in the coming year.  And we've only just begun.  We will be engaging the Board of Directors and Bournewood staff in our strategic planning process and we look forward to full staff engagement in determining the values and priorities for Bournewood as we move forward.

I'd also like to share with you some information about a new statewide initiative that is very much aligned with our mission and the individuals we serve. The State Without Stigma campaign, an initiative of the Governor's response to the Commonwealth's opioid crisis, aims to change the way we all think about, talk about and treat people with addiction conditions.

We are living amid the state's greatest public health threat -- addiction to powerful opioid painkillers which takes the lives of four people in our state each day. Changing our attitudes will open the way for people to seek treatment. Here at Bournewood, we know that addiction is not a choice, it's a chronic disease like diabetes, heart disease or cancer. Powerful and debilitating words and labels like "addict" and "junkie" stand in the way of recovery.

I urge you to visit the State Without Stigma campaign by clicking here. There are many things we can do as a community of caregivers to reverse the stigma and create an environment of tolerance and healing. Read the personal stories, take the quiz, take the pledge, nominate a champion.

Thank you for your dedication and hard work every day.

Congratulations Marie Pierre!
Employee of the Month Gold Trophy Award Top Performing Worker Recognition
Bournewood's Employee of the Month for January 2016 is Marie Pierre, MHC from Stedman ITU.

Marie has worked at Bournewood Hospital for many years. She is reliable and flexible, two key qualities of an outstanding mental health counselor who meets patients' needs and our high standards. Marie has a calm presence about her, which is especially valuable when units are experiencing high acuity.  Marie always remains composed and able to manage the milieu. She shows genuine concern and compassion with patients and often shows great courage in highly charged situations. Marie is a hard worker and her maternal sensibilities helps some patients feel safe, as well as foster an environment we all strive to create that contributes to the recovery of all who come to Bournewood for care and treatment. Marie brings a wealth of clinical experience to our hospital and we are grateful for that!

Thank you for all the work you do and congratulations Marie!

Way to go, Marie!

A Message from the President

Ballpoint pen on paper waiting for someone to start writing
I would like to wish all of you a happy, healthy and safe New Year.

As we begin 2016, we can be proud of what we have accomplished in 2015. Notably, Bournewood has continued to commit resources to improving the hospital's environment and replacing equipment as necessary. Over the past year, there have been some major capital improvements which include roof replacements of the Stedman and Dodge buildings; carpeting, painting, lighting and furniture replacement throughout the Stedman clinical/administrative lobby areas; carpeting and painting of the Woodbourne stairway and office areas; and replacement of the Stedman building fire escape. Numerous smaller projects involved replacing flooring, windows, lighting and bathroom fixtures. The video surveillance system has been upgraded and expanded; and the hospitals technology infrastructure has been enhanced. We fortunately purchased two new heavy-duty trucks with snowplow equipment just in time for last winter's record snowfall. And a new van was purchased for patient transportation.

Looking ahead, three major projects are planned for the coming year, the most significant of which will be the replacement of all doors within the patient units with new anti-barricade doors and new anti-ligature hardware. The doors and hardware selected for Bournewood are identical to what is in use at the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital, a modern state-of-the-art psychiatric hospital that opened in 2012. The new doors and hardware will substantially improve patient and staff safety. Installation began in mid-December and is projected to be completed by April 2016.

In addition, there are plans to create a new, larger medication room and expand the existing nursing staff work area on Emerson II. The architectural prints are complete. We are in the process of requesting regulatory approval from the state to proceed with the project. Upon approval, a contractor will be selected and the work will be scheduled.

Lastly, the Medical Records Department will undergo substantial renovations to create a more modern, efficient and spacious work environment. A contractor has been selected and this project is tentatively scheduled to begin in January.

The hospital has a three-year capital improvement plan that is updated annually during the budget development process. Capital improvements include substantial building and equipment expenses that are approved, prioritized and initiated as funding allows in a given year. Bournewood will continue to identify capital needs and stay on our strategic course to address them.

Most importantly, as another year comes to an end, I would like to thank each of you for your commitment to ensuring quality care for our patients and successful operations of the hospital and again wish you and your loved ones a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.

Bob Pizzi and his team did it again this year with the perfect staff Holiday Lunch. It's always a wonderful time to share a holiday meal with our colleagues and are grateful to Bob and his team of kitchen wizards!
