Greetings!
We have recently introduced a new Memory Service to Bromley. Many local GPs came along to its launch. To find out more please read our story below.
If you have any ideas or specific information you want included in future issues, please let us know. Feedback on the services we provide is always welcome.

Thanks for the memory service
 | | Dr Prema Reddy |
Our new Bromley Memory Service has been officially launched.
We spoke to local GP, Dr Prema Reddy, who works at Elm House surgery in Beckenham. She said: "I've used the service before and it has always been well managed so I am looking forward to using this new enhanced service."
The Bromley Memory Service is part of the Older People's Mental Health (OPMH) directorate. It provides assessment, diagnosis and treatment for people experiencing difficulties with their memory. Estelle Frost, OPMH Service Director, welcomed the gathering of local GPs and Oxleas staff at the Bridgeways Centre in Turpington Lane, Bromley. Estelle said: "We are here to showcase the expansion of our memory service. This building has been upgraded to facilitate that." OPMH service manager, Anne Waterworth, said the service receives about 100 referrals each month and that the team's caseload is increasing. We are also planning a new Home Treatment Team (HTT) for older people to prevent unneccessary admissions.
GPs can contact the Bromley Memory Service on 020 8462 0170. You can access a range of memory clinic and dementia resources. For more information and a referral form click here.
Our most recent GP Masterclass was also about Memory Services. You can access a range of memory clinic and dementia resources here.

Bromley CAMHS building closer links with GPs
We are making a number of improvements to our CAMHS service in Bromley, in response to our 2012 GP survey. We want to make it easier to refer families needing our services and are reviewing our guidance for referrers and providing regular training for GPs. We are also linking our senior clinicians to GP practices, to improve our day to day relationship with our referrers, and ensure GPs receive up to date, clear and practical information about CAMHS services and developments.
As a starting point, we've identified seven GP practices across the three CCG Clusters to see how we can work more closely together. These practices have been selected, based on their referral levels to CAMHS between March 2012 and March 2013, which are the highest in the borough.
The following CAMHS clinicians are contacting these practices and are keen to develop strong working relationships with key GPs and/or practice managers.
Poverest and Knoll Medical Centres (both Orpington Cluster) - contact Julie Dilallo, Consultant Nurse, email: julie.dilallo@oxleas.nhs.uk, Tel: 020 8315 4437.
The Links Practice and Dysart Surgery (both Bromley Cluster) - contact Peter Attwood, Principal Systemic Family Psychotherapist, email: peter.attwood@oxleas.nhs.uk, Tel: 020 8315 4430.
Park Group Practice (Unity Cluster) - contact Linda Pae, Consultant Child Psychotherapist, email: Linda.Pae@oxleas.nhs.uk, Tel: 020 8315 4448.
If you would like further information or would like to develop closer links with your practice, please contact Peter Attwood, Tel: 020 8315 4430.

New lead for all our adult mental health services
 | | Iain Dimond |
We have streamlined the management for adult mental health services - the man at the helm is Iain Dimond. This will encourage innovations and new ways of working which will improve care and the patient experience.
Iain has recently taken up the role of Director of Adult Mental Health and Learning Disability Services - a new directorate was formed on 1 May. Iain is an occupational therapist by background. He joined Oxleas in 2009 as Service Director for Bromley Mental Health Services before becoming Director of Adult Complex Needs Mental Health and Learning Disability Services in 2012.

Meet our clinicians ... Lorraine Regan
New era for LD
Lorraine Regan is Associate Director and Clinical Director of Adult Learning Disability Services. Lorraine joined the trust some 17 years ago as a community nurse in the Bexley Learning Disability team. Since then she has had numerous posts in all three of our boroughs.
 | | Lorraine Regan |
She said: "Previously LD was organised around professional groups. Now there is a more functional structure organised around two groups: the first is Mental Health Challenging Behaviour and Psychological Therapies; the second Complex Physical Health.
"This should enable us to be more efficient and deliver a more integrated service, with less duplication in some of the tasks we have carried out in the past, including clear care pathways for our service users which will also improve consistency across the three boroughs."

VALID work
 | | VALID OTs: Directorate Lead Occupational Therapist, Rachel Matheson, OTs Lucia Wilkes and Christopher Robertson, Dr Jennifer Wenborn from the national VALID project with OTs Reanie Evans and Carol Punshon |
A group of our occupational therapists (OTs) are working on a high profile project that aims to evaluate community occupational therapy for people with dementia and their family carers.
Valuing Active Life in Dementia or VALID is a national research study that looks to promote independence, meaningful activity and quality of life for people with dementia and their family carers living in the community.
The Oxleas OTs involved are part of the Older People's Mental Health Services Directorate. They are Christopher Robertson, Carol Punshon, Reanie Evans and Lucia Wilkes. We caught up with one member of the team, Christopher Robertson, at Yeoman House in Penge. Christopher said: "VALID is a research project which arose out of a project in the Netherlands. It is a programme that involves carers and service users, both of whom have different needs."

How we liaise and work with care homes
The Bromley Care Homes Team has been working closely with care homes in the borough helping to train and support staff working with residents with challenging behaviour. The use of stepped care models to facilitate a person centred approach to meet the needs of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia has been promoted recently by the British Psychological Society.
The Bromley team have developed their own stepped care model - a Care Pathway Tool for Behaviour that Challenges - which is informed by NICE guidance on non-cognitive symptoms in dementia. The guidelines promote a full assessment of physical health, mood, and life history, all of which are incorporated within the Care Pathway Tool.
Based in Carlton Parade, Orpington, The Bromley Care Homes Team is led by Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Melanie Place, and, assisting Melanie are Occupational Therapist, Sheila Bishop, Assistant Psychologist, Tamsin Williams all of whom can be reached on 01689 892336. They are joined by a new member of the team, Mental Health Nurse, Yvonne Chapman, her number is 01689 892360.
