TSA draft recommendations
The Trust Special Administrator (TSA) at South London Healthcare NHS Trust (SLHT) has announced his draft recommendations for future health provision across south east London.
These do impact upon our mental health services in Bromley. In order to promote safe and financially sustainable services at Princess Royal University Hospital, the TSA has recommended that the whole site is used for acute hospital provision. It has therefore recommended that we explore the option of Green Parks House (GPH), our mental health unit, being relocated to a new facility at Queen Mary's, Sidcup. Whilst these draft recommendations are being considered, we will remain 100% committed to delivering the best quality care at GPH, as patients will expect nothing less. These proposals do not impact on community mental health services in Bromley; these will remain in Bromley and we would seek to strengthen them. The earliest the recommendations could be implemented is 2015/16 and we will involve you in the planning process.
We are very pleased that the TSA has recommended that we acquire Queen Mary's Hospital (QMS) site. This is in line with a vision we have been developing with local commissioners and politicians to develop a health campus on this site. All of the services we currently provide at Queen Mary's are part of this vision and are not directly affected by this recommendation. It does mean, however, that we can develop plans with commissioners to provide further services on this site, including a hub for integrated care for older people. The full recommendations are available online at www.tsa.nhs.uk.

GP survey - thank you for taking part
Thanks to all GPs that took part in our recent GP survey. We expect to have results of the survey in December and will communicate the results with you then.
A few years ago, we carried out a survey of 150 local GPs to gather your views on how our services should develop. We found this information extremely useful and made several changes as a result including: providing patient lists to practices; establishing a programme of masterclasses and working to improve communication between our clinicians and GPs.

Connecting with service users and carers
 | | Angus Gartshore, right, with members of ResearchNet |
An exciting new initiative that aims to improve the services that patients receive from Oxleas is now well underway.
Led by Service Manager Angus Gartshore, Care, Compassion and Engagement aims to improve the services that patients receive by ensuring that the staff who deliver them are fully responsive to patients' needs.
This innovative approach allows patients and staff to work together to design services and/or care pathways. Patients are filmed talking about their experience of the services they receive. The film is then played back to focus groups consisting of staff from a range of professional backgrounds. Bromley based members of ResearchNet, a service user and carer research group, made the film which was piloted on Betts Ward, Green Parks House, in the summer. They also collaborated with staff in the subsequent re-design of services. Betts Ward is a triage ward for Bromley residents aged 18-65 with mental health problems. Angus says this was the first time the approach has ever been used in a mental health setting.
Other key areas to be looked at are engagement with service users and carers and complaints management. Angus says that discussions with ResearchNet have already yielded valuable insights: "They tell us that the first 24 hours of a person's admission to an inpatient ward is the most important to get right, as they are in crisis and this is their first impression of us."
