Hello Soccer Friends!
It's finally beginning to feel like Spring around Bucks County. The last two weekends have been perfect weather for Soccer and family fun. This beginning of our season rolled in with some unexpected weather and cooler temperatures. Fortunately, great planning, creative thinking, and a supportive community provided an adventurous start to our season. It's only April and we have had three major events! We kicked off our season with our annual soccer tournament, March into Cups, followed by our Intramural festivals. Just last weekend, we had our annual tryouts for Buckingham United at four locations for every age groups with the exception of one.
I think back on how my journey began three years ago when I took on the role as the president of soccer. The challenge then, was the much needed reintegration of our Intramural and Travel Soccer programs. Coming together as one, and being able to share common resources, ideas programs has been a huge success. Today, we are implementing the mandated US Soccer birth year and small sided game changes. Our Mission Statement that was created has been one we have lived every day in the name of every child in our community of soccer. Whether it is creating new programs, making tough decisions, working through change, at the end of the day, it is always about the kids. Losing sight of this can be detrimental to any program, and we are committed to each and every family that we serve. In a small amount of time, we have accomplished a lot and can attribute much of this success to those that have served here before us.
I wanted to share some Highlights, Updates and History:
- Our Intramural/Recreational program continues be a cornerstone of our program boasting up to 900 players a season.
- Our Travel Soccer program, Buckingham United, our Travel program noted growth and strides we have taken for the kids and families in our community! What started as a Buckingham Township Community Team (over 40 years ago) with a lot of heart and grassroots effort of a few teams... is now a travel club of over 45 teams and expanding.
- Our Adaptive Needs Program, called TOPSoccer remains as a great outreach to so many families and players in our community. The program was initiated almost 9 years ago.
- We are now Premier Members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
Fields and Facilities
- We are celebrating our One Year Anniversary of opening of the state of the art lighted fields of Hanusey Park.
- The CBAA Executive Board are working on Capital Improvements for our Herbst Sports Complex.
- We have partnered with Shearon Turf Management Company to maintain and care for the Herbst Sports Complex, which we proudly own.
Staff & Operations
- Our Operations Office Staff now has five super talented people who are extremely dedicated to the success of our programs.
- Our In-house Training Staff & Professional Age Group Head Coaches Training Model provides quality training and guidance to our players. This structure allows us to instill our philosophy of training and development.
- Our In House Intramural Referee Pool enters its 20th year, providing game management for our Under 12 through Under 19 teams.
Programs, Camps, Clinics
- Our Junior Coaches/Mentoring Program had its 1st birthday in December. We have 26 Junior Coaches actively participating in this program.
- We entered our 4th year of Winter Futsal for BUSC players. The program has doubled in numbers and we now have 8 sessions and two professional in house trainers.
- We began a Speed, Agility & Quickness (SAQ) program in December of 2015 and ran two back to back sessions that met twice weekly.
- We hosted 2 referee courses this past year in where we graduated 56 referees who are now all certified professionals we will be seeing on the pitch.
- Lil' Bucks debuted this past Fall for our little guys entering the program for two and three year olds.
- We began offering our own Soccer Camps last summer. This year, we have four exciting camps to choose from and various levels of play!
We are fortunate to be surrounded by incredible volunteers, staff and community members. Our soccer programs have grown far beyond any expectations with the great support from our members and the CBAA Executive Board.
I look forward to watching your kids play!

 Buckingham United
Buckingham United steps into a new era that continues to incorporate the volunteer parent model -paired with our professional staffing of Kevin Blokker as our DOC and our Technical directors Bree Benedict, Josh Isaacsohn and Michael Price. In 2016-17, we incorporate Professional Head Coaches of our Age groups. Training, coaching and added support for our coaches and our players. This model is one that can filtered into our Intramural and Recreation program. We owe a huge shout out to Ryan Hayward for helping us begin this journey and realize our potential and the huge part we play in this community in the name of soccer.
The first priority at Buckingham United is creating an environment which fosters a passion for the game of soccer through the sound technical development of our players. We focus on teaching the game the proper way and focusing on technique and skill while ensuring all players have a foundation based on the principles of fair play, teamwork, expression and fun! Our goal is to provide a home to players of all levels who want to commit to the training requirements of travel soccer. We provide qualified and experience coaching, supported with professional technical staff, whose goal is teaching the game in a positive, competitive and challenging environment.
We are committed to the development and welfare of every player to ensure they have the best possible soccer experience possible. In the end we strive to develop the passion, to develop the player.

Intramural / Recreation The Intramural program kicked off their season in an adventurous fashion with rain and cool temps at our Season Kick off Festivals. That did not dampen the attendance or the spirit and enthusiasm. The festivals occurred over 2 days. We had Friday night under the lights at Hanusey Park for the 6th grade - to 12th Grades. Saturday, we started off bright and early with our Under Fives culminating with our Under 10s. We were fortunate to have our Buckingham United Director of Coaching, Kevin Blokker in action at our Saturday activities along with Coach Bree and our Junior Coaches. Check out the, now popular world wide sensation of the International Soccer Dance below!
The Festivals had over 650 players plus their families present over the two days. Our season kickoff have evolved into a huge fun soccer party on the fields. The festivities included our sponsors and partners such as Angelos Soccer Corner, Mathnasium, Del Val KidsU. Each player in attendance received a CBAA Soccer Water Jug this season.
Our Kick off Festival is a lively environment with lots of soccer action and family fun. Our players enjoyed a session of Soccer Skills & Drills, Round-Robin Soccer Games as well as: - Arts & Crafts

U S Soccer Federation Recognize to Recover
This winter the US Soccer Federation established a comprehensive player health and safety program called Recognize to Recover. The first-of-its-kind program aims to reduce injuries in soccer players of all ages and promote safe play by those on and around the field.
Coaches and Parents I ask that you take the time to review these safety initiatives and recommendations. The guidelines are effect at this time. Some of these guidelines change the rules of game, so that it important that you understand these changes. The CBAA Soccer Website will also be set up with references to the Recognize to Recover information so that you can easily find information during the course of the season.
Recognize to Recover was developed with the help of medical experts and will provide coaches, players, parents and referees with information, guidance and educational materials to improve the prevention and management of injuries.Read more about Recognize to Recover

H eading Rule Changes
Per US Soccer's new concussion initiatives CBAA Soccer, Buckingham United, and Top Soccer will require the following:
- Players in U-11 programs and younger shall not engage in heading, either in practices or in games.
- Limited heading in practice for players in U-12 and U-13 programs. More specifically, these players shall be limited to a maximum of 30 minutes of heading training per week, with no more than 15-20 headers per player, per week.
- Coaches, Parents, and Players should be aware of circumstances in which individual consideration is needed. For example:
- A 10 year old playing at U-12 or older should not head the ball at all.
- An 11 or 12 year old playing at U-14 or older should abide by the heading restrictions in practice.
- Referees should enforce these restrictions by age group according to the specified rules. Referees will not be assessing the age of individual players on the field; they will enforce the rules for the age group.
- In adherence to these new requirements, referees have been instructed by U.S. Soccer of the following rule addition: When a player deliberately heads the ball in a game, an indirect free kick (IFK) should be awarded to the opposing team from the spot of the offense. If the deliberate header occurs within the goal area, the indirect free kick should be taken on the goal area line parallel to the goal line at the point nearest to where the infringement occurred.
- Modified substitution rules also took effect January 1, 2016, as follows: Any player suspected of suffering a head injury may be substituted for evaluation without the substitution counting against the team's total number of allowed substitutions during the game.
- US Club Soccer, CBAA Soccer, CBAA TOPSoccer, and Buckingham United strongly recommends that all coaches, staff members, parents and players watch the following "Concussions in Soccer" video produced by U.S. Soccer: https://youtu.be/EliVhvn_ROY
These rule changes are in effect for our IM and Travel leagues this spring.

Our Return to Play Protocol
For any player removed from practice or play who has been diagnosed as having suffered a concussion, the player will not be permitted to return to practice or play until the player has successfully completed a graduated return-to-play protocol under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
The graduated return-to-play protocol will consist of at least the following steps:
(1) The player must be symptom free at rest for 24 hours before commencing the protocol;
(2) The player must be symptom free after moderate activity for 24 hours;
(3) The player must be symptom free after heavy activity for 24 hours;
(4) Healthcare professional must confirm that the player has completed the return-to-play protocol and a physician must make the final return-to-play decision.
Coaches will not allow players to return to play without a physician signed note clearing the player for return to play.
CARDIAC SAFETY
The "non-contact collapse of an athlete, coach, referee or bystander is presumed to be sudden cardiac arrest," according to this important document from U.S. Soccer outlining the immediate response to a sudden cardiac arrest.
HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES _
Heat-related illnesses, such as heat cramps and heat exhaustion are a serious condition and could be potentially life-threatening.
Below is a reference for coaches, referees and players who train in warmer climates. The guidelines also serve as a guide for match play, hydration breaks and participant safety during extreme temperature conditions.
Thank you for taking time to read these important guidelines. If you have questions about these guidelines, just send me an e-mail at bill.gibbons@cbaasports.org and I will do my best to get you answer. Have a great and safe spring season.
Sincerely,
Bill Gibbons

Congratulations to our Recent Certified Referee Graduates
56 Referees completed the Grade 8 license course here at our club, just this year!
Buckingham United and CBAA Soccer volunteer to host a 5 night course in conjunction with EPSARC, the Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Association Referee Committee. This license allows all levels of Youth play, both centering and lining, then this is for you. - Annual re-certification is required. Referee Grade 8 (this is not School Grade- it's a Referee classification) is the "traditional" starting point for most referees, the class is a 16 hour clinic.
- Most referees in Eastern PA are Grade 8 referees, as this provides the most opportunity. More info can be found at the Eastern PA Referee Association website
- Referee Uniform and equipment are not included in class fee, but will be available for purchase during class for a discounted rate.
