Helping Organizations Thrive
January 2015 Edition
Welcome to my January 2015 email newsletter.

The mission of Jonathan Poisner Strategic Consulting is to make the world a better place by helping mission-driven organizations thrive.  I do that by assisting my clients with strategic planning, campaign planning, coalition building, fundraising, communications, and other organizational development challenges.

To keep people informed about my work, I set up this monthly (mostly) e-newsletter.  If you want to unsubscribe, just look for the link at the bottom.   My most recent edition can be read in my archive.

What Works

I was recently asked by a nonprofit leader whether there are certain words or phrases that the organization should be sure to utilize in major donor fundraising because they tend to be particularly effective.

The leader (at the urging of a board member) was thinking about major donor fundraising as a marketing exercise in which certain words hold special power, particularly if repeated over and over.

In my view, major donor fundraising is more analogous to sales if one wishes to make an analogy to business. While I have no doubt some words are particularly effective in sales, my experience is effective salespersons think more about what stories and themes to tell than what specific words to use.

I responded to the leader accordingly.  Don't focus on what words to use.  Focus on what themes should show up in the stories you tell donors.

I highlighted three themes to her.

Recent Success Stories and New Clients

I recently wrapped up a 4 month engagement with America Walks to provide strategic project management on an upgraded website and to facilitate a staff planning retreat.

I also recently wrapped up a strategic planning process for Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon.

I am in the middle strategic planning processes for the Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council
and Better Eugene-Springfield Transit (BEST).  I will be facilitating planning retreats for both organizations in February.

Working alongside Mary Fifield of Kaleidescope Consulting, I am in the middle stages of a six month project providing development and communications consulting and planning for the YWCA of Greater Portland.

Last week, I traveled to San Francisco for a training and planning day as part of a development consulting project for the Earth Law Center.

On February 4th at noon, I'll be leading a workshop entitled Major Donor Fundraising 101 at the Hatch in Portland.  It's not too late to register.
