"What do you want to be when you grow up?" That's a tough question for a young adult to answer especially when it comes to STEM careers as the "be" may not even exist yet. There are ways to have a meaningful discussion with students about pursuing STEM. Here are a five ways to get that conversation started.

STEM majors head the list of highest-paid majors for the college class of 2013, according to a new report by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Eight STEM-related majors make the top 10 list including seven in engineering fields. Top pay for these graduates is due to high demand for STEM workers.

Alabama The Oak Mountain Middle School Robotics Team finished the Alabama TSA-VEX Robotics State Competition undefeated and now moves on the national championship.

Sutter Middle School
Kyle Ajax, a PLTW student at Sutter Middle School, recently took second place in the Career GPS essay contest hosted by NextEd.

Classroom Opportunities

 

Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology 

New OpportunityCompete as an individual or as a member of a team. Individual projects promote independent research. Team projects foster collaborative research efforts. Scholarships for winning projects range from $1,000 to $100,000. Research project submission deadline is Sept. 30.

 

PLTW Scholarships at the University of New Haven 

Students who have taken at least two PLTW courses and meet other academic requirements are eligible for scholarships of up to $15,000 or more at the University of New Haven.

 

Society of Women Engineers K-12 Educator Membership 

A SWE membership provides valuable K-12 outreach tools and support. A special reduced membership rate of $20 is available to full-time K-12 educators.
