This event is a forum for undergraduates to share their research,scholarship and creative work(s) within CSUMB and surrounding community. The event celebrates inquiry and acknowledges the core questions researchers ask at the beginning, middle, and end stages of the research process that frame and support the creation of new knowledge.  The format of the event includes poster presentations, 10-minute oral presentations, 5-minute Lightning Talks, and short creative/multimedia presentations (film, creative writing).

CEQA Basics Workshop at CSUMB

The very popular (and free) "CEQA-Basics" workshop will be on April 23, 2016 in the Champan Science Center. It is only open to current students.

The California Environmental Quality Act is the statue that requires agencies to report potential environmental impacts related to their actions.  It is the process by which environmental impacts are reduced or mitigated.  Knowledge of CEQA regulations is essential in many of the career paths that past CSUMB students have followed.

Mobile GIS Workshop - Central Coast Joint Data Committee (CCJDC)

Ecology of the California Tiger Salamander Workshop

This workshop will increase participant understanding of the biology of California tiger salamanders, habitat management for this species, and

how to apply information in large-scale and local conservation planning efforts. Participants will also learn species identification, aquatic habitat sampling techniques, and upland and aquatic site assessment.

Sanctuary Exploration Center Gift Shop Manager

The California Marine Sanctuary Foundation is seeking a part-time Gift and Bookstore Manager/Facility Rental Coordinator to manage the Tail of the Whale Gift & Bookstore and coordinate private facility rentals at Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary's Exploration Center.  This is a 24-28 hour per week position with Wednesday-Friday and Sunday workdays.
 
Compensation - $17-$20 per hour based on experience.

MEarth Program Director Position

MEarth is a non-profit environmental education center right next to Carmel Middle School. The Program Director is responsible for overseeing the overall operations and management of MEarth's core programs, including the development and implementation of systems to enhance the effectiveness of staff performance and service delivery for program efficacy and success. Accordingly, the position holds rigorous standards for program development and evaluation, including measuring participant outcomes and achieving grant deliverables. As a member of the senior management team, the Program Director participates in strategic planning and budgeting initiatives in addition to problem solving. Condor Internship - Pinnacles National Park

The American Conservation Experience is seeking one full-time intern (age 18 or older) to assist with monitoring captive and wild California condors based at Pinnacles National Park. The primary duties of the intern will be:
  1. tracking, monitoring and recording condor movements, behaviors and interactions;
  2. observing and recording feeding behaviors;
  3. speaking with the public and local community members about a high-profile endangered species which is reliant on public and private lands and hunting and ranching operations for its recovery;
  4. monitoring breeding behavior and nests;
  5. handling animal carcasses used for bait stations;
  6. maintenance of equipment and facilities; and
  7. other duties as assigned to gain experience with other work groups such as habitat restoration and public education and outreach.

Bilingual Presenter at Monterey Bay Aquarium

The Guest Experience Bilingual Programs Specialist plays an essential role in the Aquarium's goal of providing superior on-site presentations and group tours for visitors that create powerful emotional connections with our diverse guests. Using the art of storytelling and commanding strong public speaking skills, the Program Specialist plays a pivotal role in engaging visitors in the Aquarium mission which is to inspire conservation of the ocean.  The Programs Specialist will work with public Guest Experience Programs, paid Aquarium Adventure programs and other interdivisional teams.  He/she will be responsible for the development of English language visitor programming, coordinating Spanish interpretation of programming and the delivery of programs in both languages throughout the Aquarium. This individual will provide training, coaching and feedback to staff and volunteers on both English and Spanish speaking visitor programs.

Discovery Camp Seasonal Instructor

Ventana Wildlife Society (VWS) is a non-profit located in Monterey County, CA. Our mission is to conserve native wildlife and their habitats, through research, restoration and education. Our Education and Outreach programs provide meaningful outdoor experiences for over 1,000 youth each year - with half of those coming from underserved communities and attending free of charge. We are seeking instructors to work with our Natural Science Discovery Camps - week-long day camps with one overnight campout per week serving youth ages 8-12. Long hours and overnights required as well as CPR/First Aid certification and CA class B commercial license (assistance available). Work schedule is Mon - Fri.

Everyone's Harvest(EH) brings people and healthy food together! The nonprofit's mission is to provide access to healthy, affordable fruits and vegetables through certified farmer's markets and community food programs. The Assistant Market Manager will oversee the Alisal market's administration, addressing participant and customer issues, collecting and tracking market income, and supervising market volunteers. The AMM will assist the Market Manager at the Pacific Grove market and also assist the Program Coordinator with various outreach activities in the community.

FishWise Database Assistant

Part time position

Under the direction of the Project Director and the Database Manager, the Database Assistant is responsible for assisting the operations and maintenance of the organization's database systems. Database Assistant facilitates data-related tasks in FileMaker Pro and Microsoft Excel and is responsible for data-curating tasks as well as providing documentation and training to assist staff with database usage. This position will assist with the acquisition, analysis and utilization of data from multiple partnerships to support FishWise's sustainable seafood objectives while ensuring that the highest quality information is used in project reporting and planning.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Marine Aquarium Societies Scholarship
Application deadline: 06/17/16

MASNA is a non-profit organization composed of marine aquarium societies and individual hobbyists from North America and abroad, totaling several thousand individuals. 

To further the goals of MASNA, MASNA offers the MASNA Student Scholarship program to help stimulate and promote the pursuit of marine science, in particular for topics that are current and relevant to the marine aquarium hobby. 

This year there are two scholarships available; one $4,000 scholarship for a college undergraduate student and one $4,000 scholarship for a college graduate student. The 2016 - 2017 MASNA Student scholarships are made possible by our generous sponsors Doctors Foster and Smith LiveAquaria.com, Ecotech Marine, and MASNA.

Geothermal Resources Council Scholarship
Application deadline: 05/06/16

To qualify for one of these awards a student must be a GRC member as well as a student in an accredited academic institution. Selection of recipients will be based upon a variety of factors, including the individual's academic
 record, student activities, geothermal industry experience, and career goals.
The following awards are available:
  • 2 Undergraduate Scholarship Awards of $1500 - the candidate must be a third or fourth year undergraduate majoring in engineering or geosciences at the time of the award (Fall 2016).
     
  • 3 Graduate Scholarship Awards of $2500 - the candidate must be enrolled in a graduate-level program in engineering or geosciences at the time of the award (Fall 2016).
     
  • 1 Student Geothermal Project Award of $4500 - selection of recipient will be based primarily upon the creation and description of a geothermal-focused project, though other factors such as the individual's academic record, student activities, geothermal industry experience, and career goals will factor into the determination as well. The project can represent a variety of academic subjects, including, but not limited to, geosciences, engineering, and economics. The primary requirement is that the project be focused on some aspect of geothermal power production, geothermal direct use applications or geothermal heat pumps.

COAST Student Travel Awards
Funding still available for travel in April, May and 
June 2016. If you students are planning to present at a meeting, apply ASAP! The CSU Council on Ocean Affairs, Science and Technology (COAST) aims to increase CSU student participation in scientific conferences and meetings. COAST will provide awards up to$750 for travel within California and up to $1000 for travel outside California to continuing CSU undergraduate and graduate students to attend and present the results of original marine,estuarine, coastal and coastal watershed research at scientific meetings and conferences with the ultimate goals of
  1. enhancing student experiences,
  2. engaging the broader scientific community, and
  3. highlighting the results of CSU research at state, national, and international levels

Marine Technology Society Scholarship
Application deadline: 04/20/16

Each year MTS offers significant scholarships to college graduate, college undergraduate and senior high school students accepted into full-time marine-related programs with focus in marine technology, marine engineering and/or marine science.

As well, an applicant must be either full-time college student currently enrolled in a either a 2-year or 4-year academic program OR a high school senior accepted to either a 2-year or 4-year academic program. Colleges may be international or domestic. Students who previously received one of the awards listed below are ineligible to apply the following year for the same award.

Groundwater Research Scholarship
Groundwater Resource Association of California Scholarship
The Central Coast branch of the Groundwater Resources Association of California (GRAC) has scholarship funds up to $2500 available for distribution to college and graduate students performing research on groundwater resources in the Central Coast branch region (generally, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties). GRAC wishes to support student research related to groundwater issues, water resources management, water recycling and other proposals related to groundwater research.
