CEQA Basics Workshop at CSUMB

The very popular (and free) "CEQA-Basics" workshop will be on April 23, 2016 in the Champan Science Center. It is only open to current students.

The California Environmental Quality Act is the statue that requires agencies to report potential environmental impacts related to their actions.  It is the process by which environmental impacts are reduced or mitigated.  Knowledge of CEQA regulations is essential in many of the career paths that past CSUMB students have followed.

Mobile GIS Workshop - Central Coast Joint Data Committee (CCJDC)

Ecology of the California Tiger Salamander Workshop

This workshop will increase participant understanding of the biology of California tiger salamanders, habitat management for this species, and

how to apply information in large-scale and local conservation planning efforts. Participants will also learn species identification, aquatic habitat sampling techniques, and upland and aquatic site assessment.

an opening for a recent graduate at the HydrologisGS 9 or 11 level (generally possessing a Masters or Doctorate in Oceanography, Civil Engineering,
Hydrology, or a related field) in Sacramento
to study sediment transport and water quality
of San Francisco Bay.  

This is an excellent opportunity to study one of the world's great estuaries and for a career with the USGS.  The Recent Graduate Program requires that applicants have graduated within the last 2 years, 6 years for qualified veterans. United States citizenship is required. The Program lasts for 1 year. Participants who successfully complete the Recent Graduate Program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent appointment or a term (1-4 years in duration) appointment without further competition.

Coastal Conservancy Entry-Level Program Manager

  • Gathering information and performing analyses required to develop and review potential Conservancy projects and to implement approved Conservancy projects.

Water Resources Specialist

The Water Resources Specialist position is responsible for cataloging, organizing, tracking, and long-term planning for water resources management in the District's open space preserves. This person will survey, manage and obtain water rights licenses and permits and generate required reports for submittal to regulatory agencies and other governing bodies, and engage in related activities in the restoration and management of aquatic resources. General
responsibilities of this position will also include managing consultants and contractors; writing detailed technical summaries and reports for District staff and the public; preparing grant applications; and conducting surveys in the field.

FishWise Database Assistant

Under the direction of the Project Director and the Database Manager, the Database Assistant is responsible for assisting the operations and maintenance of the organization's database systems. Database Assistant facilitates data-related tasks in FileMaker Pro and Microsoft Excel and is responsible for data-curating tasks as well as providing documentation and training to assist staff with database usage. This position will assist with the acquisition, analysis and utilization of data from multiple partnerships to support FishWise's sustainable seafood objectives while ensuring that the highest quality information is used in project reporting and planning.

Marine and Invasion Ecology Internships in SF Bay

Interns are needed to assist with field and laboratory studies of marine invertebrate communities in San Francisco Bay. The positions are based at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's Marine Invasions Lab located at the Romberg Tiburon Center in Tiburon, CA. The interns will assist with maintaining field experiments and conducting studies of invertebrate recruitment at three marinas in the San Francisco Bay area on a biweekly basis. 

We are looking for 1 full-time intern from April 2016 through May 2017, and 1 full-time intern from April 2016 through July 2016.  Interns will receive a stipend of $400/week.

Interns will be integral members of our international research team and will engage with the science of marine and invasion ecology via regular meetings with project personnel based in the US, Mexico and Panama.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Geothermal Resources Council Scholarship
Application deadline: 05/06/16

To qualify for one of these awards a student must be a GRC member as well as a student in an accredited academic institution. Selection of recipients will be based upon a variety of factors, including the individual's academic
 record, student activities, geothermal industry experience, and career goals.
The following awards are available:
  • 2 Undergraduate Scholarship Awards of $1500 - the candidate must be a third or fourth year undergraduate majoring in engineering or geosciences at the time of the award (Fall 2016).
     
  • 3 Graduate Scholarship Awards of $2500 - the candidate must be enrolled in a graduate-level program in engineering or geosciences at the time of the award (Fall 2016).
     
  • 1 Student Geothermal Project Award of $4500 - selection of recipient will be based primarily upon the creation and description of a geothermal-focused project, though other factors such as the individual's academic record, student activities, geothermal industry experience, and career goals will factor into the determination as well. The project can represent a variety of academic subjects, including, but not limited to, geosciences, engineering, and economics. The primary requirement is that the project be focused on some aspect of geothermal power production, geothermal direct use applications or geothermal heat pumps.

COAST Student Travel Awards
Funding still available for travel in April, May and 
June 2016. If you students are planning to present at a meeting, apply ASAP! The CSU Council on Ocean Affairs, Science and Technology (COAST) aims to increase CSU student participation in scientific conferences and meetings. COAST will provide awards up to$750 for travel within California and up to $1000 for travel outside California to continuing CSU undergraduate and graduate students to attend and present the results of original marine,estuarine, coastal and coastal watershed research at scientific meetings and conferences with the ultimate goals of
  1. enhancing student experiences,
  2. engaging the broader scientific community, and
  3. highlighting the results of CSU research at state, national, and international levels

Marine Technology Society Scholarship
Application deadline: 04/20/16

Each year MTS offers significant scholarships to college graduate, college undergraduate and senior high school students accepted into full-time marine-related programs with focus in marine technology, marine engineering and/or marine science.

As well, an applicant must be either full-time college student currently enrolled in a either a 2-year or 4-year academic program OR a high school senior accepted to either a 2-year or 4-year academic program. Colleges may be international or domestic. Students who previously received one of the awards listed below are ineligible to apply the following year for the same award.

Groundwater Research Scholarship
Groundwater Resource Association of California Scholarship
The Central Coast branch of the Groundwater Resources Association of California (GRAC) has scholarship funds up to $2500 available for distribution to college and graduate students performing research on groundwater resources in the Central Coast branch region (generally, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties). GRAC wishes to support student research related to groundwater issues, water resources management, water recycling and other proposals related to groundwater research.
