Ft. Ord Hike - Environmental Studies Club
Friday April 8, 11am-1:30pm

We will be meeting at the Fort Ord entrance near Schoonover Park on Inter-garrison Rd (there is a turn out where you can park). Peer to Peer (P2P) Mentoring Program
 
The Peer to Peer (P2P) mentor program creates a support system for students by matching them with Mentors who connect them to their major, opportunities, resources on-campus, internships, and undergraduate research. Students choose when, where and how often to meet with their mentor. We currently have 13 peer mentors available from a variety of disciplines and majors.Find out how to get involved below.

CEQA Basics Workshop at CSUMB

The very popular (and free) "CEQA-Basics" workshop will be on April 23, 2016 in the Champan Science Center. It is only open to current students.

The California Environmental Quality Act is the statue that requires agencies to report potential environmental impacts related to their actions.  It is the process by which environmental impacts are reduced or mitigated.  Knowledge of CEQA regulations is essential in many of the career paths that past CSUMB students have followed.

Mobile GIS Workshop - Central Coast Joint Data Committee (CCJDC)

Ecology of the California Tiger Salamander Workshop

This workshop will increase participant understanding of the biology of California tiger salamanders, habitat management for this species, and

how to apply information in large-scale and local conservation planning efforts. Participants will also learn species identification, aquatic habitat sampling techniques, and upland and aquatic site assessment.

Ecology & Conservation of Kelp Forest Communities,

Jun 20-Jul 22, 2016 (5-weeks), M-F, 5-units.
Summer tuition ($5080) will be covered; class size is limited.

The course is aimed at upper division undergraduates / beginning graduate students interested in benthic ecology & kelp forests. SCUBA certification (Advanced/Open Water II) & all personal diving gear is required (AAUS scientific certification is not required, but desirable).

Regenerative Sciences Institute - Biotechnology Course

This internship course is a condensed innovative successor to our highly competitive 6-month Biotechnology Internship Program. The new program is a 4-week course that is a hybrid of formal lectures, participatory exercises and small projects based on ongoing research, similar to what our interns have worked on in the past.  This new format will allow us to provide a wider range of material and serve more students annually.

Program Dates:April 18th-May18th or June 20th-July 21st

INTERNSHIPS & JOBS
Ecosystem Planning & Restoration Intern
Application Deadline: 04/30/16

Ecosystem Planning and Restoration (EPR) has open positions for a summer intern (paid position - 40 hr/week) in both our Houston, TX and Raleigh, NC offices. EPR specializes in ecosystem restoration and mitigation, environmental studies, permitting, and watershed studies. As part of our commitment to environmental education and stewardship, we are actively looking for motivated, high quality students who are eager to further their education through hands-on experience.

The intern positions will assist EPR scientists, biologists, engineers, and project managers in activities that may include: environmental analyses for NEPA documentation; preparing sections of documents; assisting with surveys and site assessments at field locations; data collection and processing; and gaining an understanding of environmental services pertaining to ecosystem planning and assessment, as well as wetland and stream assessment and design.

Lynz Technologies GIS Internship in Santa Cruz
Application Deadline: 04/25/16

The project is for the City of Los Angeles. They are tasked with mapping all of their substructure maps into GIS for the entire City. There are over 4,000 scanned images that need to be digitized.

They are looking for 3-4 students for 20-40 hours per week for approximately 6-8 months. The job would start immediately and will be in the $20/hr. range depending upon experience. The person must have completed at least one ArcGIS Desktop course within the last year, or have at leas 6 months of working experience.

CSUMB Boat House Internships
Application Deadline: Rolling, apply ASAP

Interns will assist with boat house upkeep, boat maintenance and repair, launching and recovering boats, boat operation, navigation, data collection, diving support, engineering and other marine operations.

These internships are expected to take place year-round with ~4 hours of work per week. Work is unpaid, but students have the option to gain college credit.

Marine and Invasion Ecology Internships in SF Bay
Application deadline: ASAP

Interns are needed to assist with field and laboratory studies of marine invertebrate communities in San Francisco Bay. The positions are based at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's Marine Invasions Lab located at the Romberg Tiburon Center in Tiburon, CA. The interns will assist with maintaining field experiments and conducting studies of invertebrate recruitment at three marinas in the SF Bay area on a biweekly basis. The interns will also assist with local logistical coordination and data entry for the project.

We are looking for 1 full-time intern for the full duration of the project, from April 2016 through May 2017, and 1 full-time intern to assist from April 2016 through July 2016.  Interns will receive a stipend of $400/week.

Interns will be integral members of our international research team and will engage with the science of marine and invasion ecology via regular meetings with project personnel based in the US, Mexico and Panama.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Geothermal Resources Council Scholarship
Application deadline: 05/06/16

To qualify for one of these awards a student must be a GRC member as well as a student in an accredited academic institution. Selection of recipients will be based upon a variety of factors, including the individual's academic
 record, student activities, geothermal industry experience, and career goals.
The following awards are available:
  • 2 Undergraduate Scholarship Awards of $1500 - the candidate must be a third or fourth year undergraduate majoring in engineering or geosciences at the time of the award (Fall 2016).
     
  • 3 Graduate Scholarship Awards of $2500 - the candidate must be enrolled in a graduate-level program in engineering or geosciences at the time of the award (Fall 2016).
     
  • 1 Student Geothermal Project Award of $4500 - selection of recipient will be based primarily upon the creation and description of a geothermal-focused project, though other factors such as the individual's academic record, student activities, geothermal industry experience, and career goals will factor into the determination as well. The project can represent a variety of academic subjects, including, but not limited to, geosciences, engineering, and economics. The primary requirement is that the project be focused on some aspect of geothermal power production, geothermal direct use applications or geothermal heat pumps.

CA Lake Management Society Scholarship
Application deadline: 05/13/16

The California Lake Management Society (CALMS) wishes to support students studying in an area related to lake and reservoir limnology, ecology, or management and will present two $1000 scholarships in 2016.  The scholarships will be paid in 2 installments: $500 will be awarded to each winner in June 2016, with the second $500 awarded at the annual CALMS conference to be held in Davis, California on October 13-14, 2016. CALMS will also provide up to $300 toward hotel and related travel expenses for attendance at the conference. The scholarship may be used to pay for education and/or research expenses.  Eligible applicants must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited California, Arizona, or Nevada college or university. 
 
The scholarship winners will have their research summaries (submitted as part of the application; see below) published in the CALMS newsletter and will be required to give a presentation at the 2016 annual meeting. A committee consisting of academic and industry representatives will judge applications.  Individuals with a personal or institutional affiliation will not judge an applicant.

COAST Student Travel Awards
Funding still available for travel in April, May and 
June 2016. If you students are planning to present at a meeting, apply ASAP! The CSU Council on Ocean Affairs, Science and Technology (COAST) aims to increase CSU student participation in scientific conferences and meetings. COAST will provide awards up to$750 for travel within California and up to $1000 for travel outside California to continuing CSU undergraduate and graduate students to attend and present the results of original marine,estuarine, coastal and coastal watershed research at scientific meetings and conferences with the ultimate goals of
  1. enhancing student experiences,
  2. engaging the broader scientific community, and
  3. highlighting the results of CSU research at state, national, and international levels

Australia Summer Study Abroad Scholarship
2 Housing/tuition scholarships available.

This broad-ranging advanced marine biology unit provides an opportunity to study tropical marine biology and ecology in a coral reef setting at Murdoch University. It provides an introduction to Western Australian biogeography and habitats, covering advanced topics in biology, physiology and ecology of marine plants and animals. Human impacts and conservation of tropical marine environments are addressed. The field camp provides training and experience in field techniques..

Marine Technology Society Scholarship
Application Deadline: 04/20/16

Each year MTS offers significant scholarships to college graduate, college undergraduate and senior high school students accepted into full-time marine-related programs with focus in marine technology, marine engineering and/or marine science.

As well, an applicant must be either full-time college student cur­rently enrolled in a either a 2-year or 4-year academic program OR a high school senior accepted to either a 2-year or 4-year academic program. Colleges may be international or domestic. Students who previously re­ceived one of the awards listed below are ineligible to apply the following year for the same award.
