Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park - Sykes Hot Springs

Student Recreation and the Catalyst Center are hosting an Alternative Spring Break opportunity in Big Sur at Sykes Hot Springs. Join CSUMB and the VWA on the Pine Ridge Trail to help install new pit toilets at Sykes Camp in . Sykes Camp is an overused camp that sees serious impact due to high amounts of visitation . The Wild and Scenic Big Sur river suffers as a result and pit toilets help alleviate a serious source of pollution. Watch this video for more information.

OVERVIEW: This is a 3 day/ 3 night work trip basing out of Sykes Camp. Meet at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Sunday afternoon/evening and caravan to the Terrace Creek trailhead the next morning, Hike in 5.6 miles to camp Monday. Work Monday/Tuesday, optional work/hike out Wednesday.

No prior experience in trail work is necessary. Tools and instruction on tool use and safety will be provided. A $50 deposit is required, but will be refunded after the trip is completed.

The event highlights the pharmacy profession by looking at the various career opportunities and the required educational training. Participants will have the opportunity to hear and interact with pharmacists and current students to hear their insight of the profession and the pharmacy program here at UCSF. In addition, we will also be presenting updates to our curriculum and admissions processes. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with admission representatives at these events.

The course is aimed at upper division undergraduates / beginning graduate students interested in benthic ecology & kelp forests. SCUBA certification (Advanced/Open Water II) & all personal diving gear is required (AAUS scientific certification is not required, but desirable).

Regenerative Sciences Institute - Biotechnology Course

This internship course is a condensed innovative successor to our highly competitive 6-month Biotechnology Internship Program. The new program is a 4-week course that is a hybrid of formal lectures, participatory exercises and small projects based on ongoing research, similar to what our interns have worked on in the past.  This new format will allow us to provide a wider range of material and serve more students annually.

College Seat Open on Sanctuary Advisory Council

The National Marine Sanctuary System regards the involvement of communities and the development of a stewardship ethic as vitally important to successfully conserve Sanctuary resources. An important way to achieve this involvement is through the formation of a Sanctuary Advisory Council (Advisory Council). Advisory Council members serve as ambassadors between the Sanctuary staff and the various communities and users adjacent to its boundary. They actively engage their constituencies and work with the Sanctuary staff to resolve issues and concerns. As such, we are looking for highly motivated people who are able and willing to volunteer their time to help us reach out and work constructively with the diverse interests, users and communities that have a stake in the resources of the Sanctuary.

The College Seat:
  • Currently attending a local institution of higher education (e.g., college, university);
  • Live in an area affected by the sanctuary;
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with student peers;
  • Possess an interest in sanctuary resource protection and management;
  • Experience or knowledge regarding public uses and activities in the sanctuary;
  • Demonstrate relevant volunteer or internship experience; and
  • Commitment to 18 month term on the Sanctuary Advisory Council.

Floodplain Study at Los Alamos National Laboratory

Full time position

They are seeking a research assistant for field work and data analysis on a study that examines carbon retention, storage, and processing in floodplains. This summer employment with the Earth and Environmental Sciences division at Los Alamos National Laboratory integrates numerous disciplines to assist in examination of carbon cycling and storage in rivers and provides the opportunity to gain experience in geomorphology, pedology, hydrology, riparian ecology, biogeochemistry, GIS, remote sensing, and hydrologic modeling.

Primary duties: Assist with field work primarily on the East River near Crested Butte Colorado. Assist with data entry and analysis with a focus to be selected from one of the below mentioned topics. Focus on a portion of one of the mentioned or related topics will contribute significantly to the larger project (this decision can be made after the hire date).

US Forest Service Pathways Internships
Application open: 02/29/16-03/04/16

Last year we were able to hire over 150 Pathways NTE student interns throughout the California.As in the past, all students are encouraged to apply including the following majors: biology, business/public administration, recreation, environmental science, etc. The application will be on USAjobs.gov and will be open from Monday, February 29th through Friday, March 4th. Students will only have this week to apply. Many job locations will include housing.

Advanced Computing for Earth Science Internships
Application deadline: 03/01/15

Advanced Computing for Earth Sciences (ACES), sponsored by the University of Virginia Advanced Research Computing Services (ARCS) group, NASA, and U.Va.'s Department of Environmental Sciences, is an exciting opportunity for students interested in computational modeling for  ocean,  atmospheric,  climate, geophysical, and other Earth sciences. Students enrolled in the ACES program acquire hands-on application computing experience as well as training in the essentials of software engineering and high-performance computing.

A total of 20 students will be selected to attend the summer school on grounds at the University of Virginia. They will then be placed in 8-week paid internship programs at various NASA research centers across the country. Some previous programming experience is helpful but is not required. Students with advanced computer science skills who are interested in applications for Earth sciences are also encouraged to apply. Those admitted to the summer school will be provided with housing, two meals per day during the work week, and a generous stipend for all other meals. Travel expenses are covered for up to a maximum of $750 per student. Only U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. We accept graduate students and undergraduates who will be completing their third or fourth years of study.

CSUMB's Camp SEA Lab Summer Jobs

Camp SEA Lab summer camps are designed for youth ages 8-16 from culturally diverse backgrounds.  Under the constant supervision of staff, campers engage in daily weeklong experiences in marine science education and ocean recreation, such as surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, tide pooling, and whale watching.  All camp staff is responsible for the development and implementation of a safe, educational, and inspiring program in marine science.

Marine and Invasion Ecology Internships in SF Bay
Application deadline: ASAP

Interns are needed to assist with field and laboratory studies of marine invertebrate communities in San Francisco Bay. The positions are based at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's Marine Invasions Lab located at the Romberg Tiburon Center in Tiburon, CA. The interns will assist with maintaining field experiments and conducting studies of invertebrate recruitment at three marinas in the SF Bay area on a biweekly basis. The interns will also assist with local logistical coordination and data entry for the project.

We are looking for 1 full-time intern for the full duration of the project, from April 2016 through May 2017, and 1 full-time intern to assist from April 2016 through July 2016.  Interns will receive a stipend of $400/week.

Interns will be integral members of our international research team and will engage with the science of marine and invasion ecology via regular meetings with project personnel based in the US, Mexico and Panama.

Science Camp Counselor at Clemson University

Clemson University's Youth Learning Institute is looking for college students to work as summer counselors at their various summer camps. Camp Sewee takes place at the Sewee Coastal Retreat Center located near Charleston, SC. Councilors will work with children between the ages of 8-14.

White Shark Volunteer and Research in South Africa

White Shark Diving Co. (WSDC) is a fully licensed shark cage-diving tour operator recognized by the South African Department of Environmental Affairs, allowing them to undertake great white shark cage diving activities and collect research monitoring data. The volunteer research program allows WSDC to continually support innovative conservation and research projects taking place at the Shark Research Group of the University of Stellenbosch and the SA Shark Conservancy, as well as physically contribute through data collection, monitoring, and our own research projects.

The CSU Council on Ocean Affairs, Science & Technology (COAST) is offering paid internships for continuing CSU undergraduate and graduate students for Summer 2016. Interns will be placed with one of 13 host institutions where they will work side-by-side with professional scientists on current research and management projects. This is an excellent opportunity for CSU students to gain valuable experience and technical skills while working with experts in fisheries, marine ecology, policy and marine technology!

National Park ServiceGeoscientists in the parks (GIP) Program
Application deadline: 02/29/16 

The Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) program works with partners to match college students and recent graduates age 18 - 35 years old with short-term, paid, internships with the National Park Service. Participants may assist with research, synthesis of scientific literature, geologic mapping, GIS analysis, site evaluations, resource inventorying and monitoring, impact mitigation, developing brochures and informative media presentations, and educating park staff and park visitors. GIP positions can last from 3 months to one-year.

Return of the Natives Weeds Associate
Application deadline: 02/20/16 

Return of the Native Associates(s) will work to control invasive plants throughout the Fort Ord National Monument (FONM). Work will be performed in both the BLM and the U.S. Army portions of the FONM. 

The Return of the Native Associates will work with the Supervisory Biological Science Technician and other BLM staff who make up the FONM Weed Crew who will provide direction and guidance to the associates.
Work will be conducted the range areas of FONM where an ongoing cleanup is being conducted to remove unexploded ordnance and to ensure the area is safe to be transferred to BLM. This is a field position and most work will be performed outdoors, often off trail, and in all weather conditions.

Condor Recovery  in Pinnacles National Park

The American Conservation Experience is seeking one full-time intern (age 18 or older) to assist with monitoring captive and wild California condors based at Pinnacles National Park. The primary duties of the intern will be:
  1. tracking, monitoring and recording condor movements, behaviors and interactions;
  2. observing and recording feeding behaviors;
  3. speaking with the public and local community members about a high-profile endangered species which is reliant on public and private lands and hunting and ranching operations for its recovery;
  4. monitoring breeding behavior and nests;
  5. handling animal carcasses used for bait stations;
  6. maintenance of equipment and facilities; and
  7. other duties as assigned to gain experience with other work groups such as habitat restoration and public education and outreach.

Wildlife Field Assistant at Santa Lucia Conservancy

The Santa Lucia Conservancy is conducting novel and essential habitat restoration activities and wildlife research in the Central Coast. As a small staff, we like to partner with invested and passionate volunteers to increase our reach at the landscape scale. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn new field techniques and research skills for wildlife ecology. Projects include but are not limited to: bird banding, wildlife telemetry tracking, wildlife camera data collection and management, mapping, vegetation sampling, and pond sampling.

Monterey County Public Health Lab Internship

The Monterey County Public Health Laboratory is seeking students interested in environmental and clinical microbiology and environmental chemistry for an unpaid, part-time position for flexible hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The position would provide an opportunity for students to learn about the overall work of the laboratory and benefit to the community. Students would be required to interview for the position and to meet pre-hire requirements for regular PHL County employees including finger printing and TB (tuberculosis) testing.

Marine Mammal Internship

This internship,  with the California Wildlife Center in Malibu, will provide an exciting and challenging educational experience in the marine mammal field, while also allowing for additional hands-on experience with other native wildlife. The interns will be working closely with the Marine Mammal staff in all aspects of stranding response and marine mammal rehabilitation; including logistics, assessment, capture/restraint, transport to the marine mammal rehabilitation facility, animal care, educating the public and public relations. In addition, interns will provide support to CWC Hospital staff in animal husbandry tasks for avian and terrestrial wildlife.

ACT Summer Internship Program

ACT is offering paid 8-10 week internships from June 6, 2016-August 5, 2016. They support students in their transition to the workforce by providing hands-on experience through our annual internship program. The program allows graduate and undergraduate students to work in their field and potentially gain full-time employment based on performance and ACT organization growth.

Marin Municipal Water District - Watershed Interns

Marin Municipal Water District has a need for Watershed Aides, to serve in one of five distinct areas.  These positions are all within the Watershed Management programs of the District's Facilities & Watershed Management Division, and are in the five areas of: 
-Vegetation Management,
-Volunteer Management/Environmental Education & Community Engagement,
-Watershed Maintenance,
-Watershed Protection/Ranger Aide, or
-Fisheries Management

SCHOLARSHIPS
Alan Church Environmental Steward Scholarship
Application Deadline: 03/11/16

An $800 scholarship will be awarded to a Junior, Senior or graduate student in SEP for environmental stewardship. In the application essay, applicants should describe:
  • Volunteer work focused on improving the natural environment (Return of the Natives, etc.)
  • Coursework or volunteer work that motivated youth to appreciate the natural environment.
  • Coursework or volunteer work that involves attending local civic meetings related to the natural environment.

Marine Technology Society Scholarship
Application Deadline: 04/20/16

Each year MTS offers significant scholarships to college graduate, college undergraduate and senior high school students accepted into full-time marine-related programs with focus in marine technology, marine engineering and/or marine science.

As well, an applicant must be either full-time college student cur­rently enrolled in a either a 2-year or 4-year academic program OR a high school senior accepted to either a 2-year or 4-year academic program. Colleges may be international or domestic. Students who previously re­ceived one of the awards listed below are ineligible to apply the following year for the same award.

Duke Marine Lab Scholarship Fall 2016
Application Deadline: 02/25/16

The Duke University Marine Lab is pleased to offer scholarships for two non-Duke undergraduates covering tuition & fees, room & board, books, travel to Beaufort, and full support for participation in a Beaufort Signature travel course to Panama during a semester of study, Fall 2016 in Beaufort North Carolina. Undergraduate fellows will enroll in Duke courses taught in Beaufort, where there is emphasis on the biology and physiology of marine organisms, marine molecular biology, marine policy, and coastal socio-ecological issues.

Groundwater Research Scholarship
Groundwater Resource Association of California Scholarship
The Central Coast branch of the Groundwater Resources Association of California (GRAC) has scholarship funds up to $2500 available for distribution to college and graduate students performing research on groundwater resources in the Central Coast branch region (generally, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties). GRAC wishes to support student research related to groundwater issues, water resources management, water recycling and other proposals related to groundwater research.

COAST Scholarship
The Council of Ocean Affairs, Science & Technology (COAST) provides travel support for CSU undergraduate and graduate students to present the results of original research at marine, estuarine and coastal-themed scientific meetings and conferences, or special thematic sessions of more general scientific meetings. Please note COAST has new guidelines and policies regarding travel reimbursements as of August 1, 2014. See award announcement for full details.
