Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park - Sykes Hot Springs

Student Recreation and the Catalyst Center are hosting an Alternative Spring Break opportunity in Big Sur at Sykes Hot Springs. Join CSUMB and the VWA on the Pine Ridge Trail to help install new pit toilets at Sykes Camp in . Sykes Camp is an overused camp that sees serious impact due to high amounts of visitation . The Wild and Scenic Big Sur river suffers as a result and pit toilets help alleviate a serious source of pollution. Watch this video for more information.

OVERVIEW: This is a 3 day/ 3 night work trip basing out of Sykes Camp. Meet at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Sunday afternoon/evening and caravan to the Terrace Creek trailhead the next morning, Hike in 5.6 miles to camp Monday. Work Monday/Tuesday, optional work/hike out Wednesday.

No prior experience in trail work is necessary. Tools and instruction on tool use and safety will be provided. A $50 deposit is required, but will be refunded after the trip is completed.

Biological Scientist at Florida Fish and Wildlife Harmful Algal Bloom Group

The Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Program at FWRI/FWC invites applications for a Biological Scientist II to assist with and lead routine and event response field campaigns; provide laboratory support; and maintain vessels, equipment and instruments in support of FWC's state-wide HAB monitoring program. The position is located in St. Petersburg, FL and is a full-time, hourly position starting at $16.00/hr. This is a time-limited position; continued employment is anticipated but contingent upon annual state appropriations.

Hydrologist Technician at The Ohio State University
Beginning: March or April 2016

The Stream and River Ecology (STRIVE) lab in the School of Environment and Natural Resources seeks a skilled hydrologic research technician to start full-time March/April 2016. Work assignments include field installation, operation, and maintenance of ISCO samplers for suspended sediment in streams; monitoring chemical water-quality parameters; maintaining meters and other sampling equipment; and assisting with biological collections and lab work as necessary. 

Required qualifications: 1) the ability to work independently and keep meticulous notes, 2) demonstrated field experience in hydrologic sampling methods including instrument installation with associated electronic data-logging equipment and troubleshooting in the field related to equipment failures, 3) BS in a field related to the project, and 4) a valid driver's license. Experience with ISCO samplers highly desired. The position is initially for 1 year, with the possibility of renewal.

Floodplain Study at Los Alamos National Laboratory

Full time position

They are seeking a research assistant for field work and data analysis on a study that examines carbon retention, storage, and processing in floodplains. This summer employment with the Earth and Environmental Sciences division at Los Alamos National Laboratory integrates numerous disciplines to assist in examination of carbon cycling and storage in rivers and provides the opportunity to gain experience in geomorphology, pedology, hydrology, riparian ecology, biogeochemistry, GIS, remote sensing, and hydrologic modeling.

Primary duties: Assist with field work primarily on the East River near Crested Butte Colorado. Assist with data entry and analysis with a focus to be selected from one of the below mentioned topics. Focus on a portion of one of the mentioned or related topics will contribute significantly to the larger project (this decision can be made after the hire date).

Global Health Fellows - MEASURE Evaluation Intern

7 Week Internship

The MEASURE Evaluation Project is the USAID Bureau for Global Health's (BGH) primary vehicle for supporting improvements in monitoring and evaluation (M&E) in population, health, and nutrition programs worldwide.Significant human and financial resources have been invested worldwide in the collection of data on populations and facilities, and MEASURE Evaluation is only one of many USAID-supported projects that work to improve the use of information to guide policymaking, program design, management and service provision in the health sector..

The MEASURE Evaluation Management Team intends to conduct a mid-term project evaluation to assess the project's progress towards intended results so far, and to offer recommendations on how the project can improve its management and implementation for the remainder of the agreement. The MEASURE Evaluation Intern  will be assigned to the Evaluation Team within the Strategic Information, Evaluation and Informatics Division in the BGH's Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA), will report to the Agreement Officer's Representative (AOR), and will work closely with other members of the MEASURE Evaluation Management Team.

Museum Education Programs Manager

FishWise Database Assistant

Under the direction of the Project Director and the Database Manager, the Database Assistant is responsible for assisting the operations and maintenance of the organization's database systems. Database Assistant facilitates data-related tasks in FileMaker Pro and Microsoft Excel and is responsible for data-curating tasks as well as providing documentation and training to assist staff with database usage. This position will assist with the acquisition, analysis and utilization of data from multiple partnerships to support FishWise's sustainable seafood objectives while ensuring that the highest quality information is used in project reporting and planning.

Advanced Computing for Earth Sciences Internship
Application Deadline: 03/01/16

Students enrolled in the ACES program acquire hands-on application computing experience as well as training in the essentials of software engineering and high-performance computing.A total of 20 students will be selected to attend the summer school on grounds at the University of Virginia. They will then be placed in 8-week paid internship programs at various NASA research centers across the country. Some previous programming experience is helpful but is not required.  Students with advanced computer science skills who are interested in applications for Earth sciences are also encouraged to apply. Those admitted to the summer school will be provided with housing, two meals per day during the work week, and a generous stipend for all other meals. Travel expenses are covered for up to a maximum of $750 per student. Only U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. We accept graduate students and undergraduates who will be completing their third or fourth years of study.

Marine and Invasion Ecology Internships in SF Bay

Interns are needed to assist with field and laboratory studies of marine invertebrate communities in San Francisco Bay. The positions are based at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's Marine Invasions Lab located at the Romberg Tiburon Center in Tiburon, CA. The interns will assist with maintaining field experiments and conducting studies of invertebrate recruitment at three marinas in the San Francisco Bay area on a biweekly basis. 

We are looking for 1 full-time intern from April 2016 through May 2017, and 1 full-time intern from April 2016 through July 2016.  Interns will receive a stipend of $400/week.

Interns will be integral members of our international research team and will engage with the science of marine and invasion ecology via regular meetings with project personnel based in the US, Mexico and Panama.

Fishery Scientist at Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (Council) is seeking candidates for the position of Fishery Scientist. The Council manages fishery resources in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone off the coast of the Mid-Atlantic region (New York through North Carolina).
The Fishery Scientist is responsible for providing scientific expertise to support the management of marine fisheries in the Mid-Atlantic region. Working closely with the Executive Director and other members of the Council staff, the Fishery Scientist's duties include summarizing and analyzing data and relevant information pertaining to Mid-Atlantic fisheries, assisting in the analysis of proposed fishery management measures, and developing solutions to complex marine resource challenges such as climate change and ecosystem issues. This position also involves coordinating and participating in a wide range of programs and projects in support of the Council's science and management goals.

EPA Web Developer Position for Recent Grad

The EPA Environmental Business and Research Support Program has a new job opening for a Web Developer within the Integrated Systems Toxicology Division (ISTD) at the EPA facility in Research Triangle Park, N.C.! The ISTD uses computational and molecular data-driven approaches to identify key biological pathway events that lead to adverse health outcomes.
 
The successful Web Developer will provide support in application development and programming for ISTD's dynamic database applications. Job responsibilities include creating new applications (task flows, end-to-end experiences, screen designs, user interface specifications), maintaining existing code bases, developing new software and frameworks, standardizing websites, etc. The job is geared towards those who have a bachelor's degree in business, communication, information science, computer science, or a related field. White Shark Research in South Africa

CDC/CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship
CSTE, in collaboration with CDC, the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), established the Applied Epidemiology Fellowship to train recent graduates in the expanding field of applied epidemiology. The goal of the fellowship is to provide a high quality training experience and to secure long-term career placement for fellows at the state or local level. Participating fellows will receive two years of on-the-job training at a state or local health agency under the guidance of an experienced mentor. The fellowship's mission is to meet the nation's ongoing need for applied epidemiology workforce capacity in state and local health departments through a national fellowship-training program.

Alan Church Environmental Steward Scholarship

An $800 scholarship will be awarded to a Junior, Senior or graduate student in SEP for environmental stewardship. In the application essay, applicants should describe:
  • Volunteer work focused on improving the natural environment (Return of the Natives, etc.)
  • Coursework or volunteer work that motivated youth to appreciate the natural environment.
  • Coursework or volunteer work that involves attending local civic meetings related to the natural environment.

Marine Technology Society Scholarship
Application deadline: 04/20/16

Each year MTS offers significant scholarships to college graduate, college undergraduate and senior high school students accepted into full-time marine-related programs with focus in marine technology, marine engineering and/or marine science.

As well, an applicant must be either full-time college student currently enrolled in a either a 2-year or 4-year academic program OR a high school senior accepted to either a 2-year or 4-year academic program. Colleges may be international or domestic. Students who previously received one of the awards listed below are ineligible to apply the following year for the same award.

Myers Trust: 2016 Request for Grant Proposals

Each year the Myers Trust awards grants to central California graduate students in the marine sciences. The Trust has been awarding grants for the past 30 years. 

The average award is approximately $1,000 - $2,000 depending in part on the number of proposals funded and the income available to the Trust.

Groundwater Research Scholarship
Groundwater Resource Association of California Scholarship
The Central Coast branch of the Groundwater Resources Association of California (GRAC) has scholarship funds up to $2500 available for distribution to college and graduate students performing research on groundwater resources in the Central Coast branch region (generally, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties). GRAC wishes to support student research related to groundwater issues, water resources management, water recycling and other proposals related to groundwater research.
