Biological Science Technician with Forest Service

The U.S. Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research Station will be filling six temporary positions for the summer of 2016 (approximately late May/early June through late August to mid-September - start and end dates somewhat flexible) to assist with forestry and forest ecology research. The duty station for the positions will be Pinecrest, California, 35 miles east of Sonora in the central Sierra Nevada. Crew members will be hired at the GS-4 level ($13.84/hour) and the GS-5 level ($15.49/hour) based on education and experience.

In Fall 2016, the Panetta Institute will offer its eighteenth annual Congressional Internship Program for students selected from the 23 campuses of the California State University, Dominican University, and Santa Clara University. We have been asked to choose one outstanding undergraduate (junior or senior) student leader to participate in an extraordinary learning experience. The thirteen-week program runs from August 7, through November 5, 2016, beginning with a two-week training session at the Panetta Institute followed by eleven weeks in Washington, D.C.

NASA DEVELOP Summer Internship

DEVELOP is an Earth Science training and development program under NASA's Applied Sciences' Program. Participants conduct team-based projects over a span of 10 weeks in the spring, summer, and fall terms, and project topics vary from ecological forecasting, air quality, water resources, forestry, and disasters to climate, oceans, agriculture, and more. Each project collaborates with science mentors and end-users to address environmental and policy concerns using NASA satellite imagery and geospatial software. We have locations across the United States, including two California nodes in the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View and the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena.

National Park Service: Geoscientists in the parks (GIP) Program

The Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) program works with partners to match college students and recent graduates age 18 - 35 years old with short-term, paid, internships with the National Park Service. Participants may assist with research, synthesis of scientific literature, geologic mapping, GIS analysis, site evaluations, resource inventorying and monitoring, impact mitigation, developing brochures and informative media presentations, and educating park staff and park visitors. GIP positions can last from 3 months to one-year.

STEMSEAS: A Week at Sea

STEMSEAS aims to provide ship-based, 6-10 day exploratory experiences for undergraduates from diverse backgrounds aboard NSF-funded research vessels. Students will sail with experienced faculty mentors and engage in geoscience and oceanography activities (while also having fun)!
All expenses (travel to/from the ports of call, materials, and living expenses while on the ship) will be paid by the program- there is no cost to participants.
The tentative 2016 schedule is as follows: May 10-18: Sail on the Oceanus from San Diego, CA to Honolulu, HI. July 15-20: Sail on the Endeavor from Morehead City, NC, to Gulfport, MS. August 16-24: Sail on the Sikuliaq from Seattle, WA to Nome, AK.

Return of the Natives Weeds Associate
Application deadline: 02/20/16

Return of the Native Associates(s) will work to control invasive plants throughout the Fort Ord National Monument (FONM). Work will be performed in both the BLM and the U.S. Army portions of the FONM.
The Return of the Native Associates will work with the Supervisory Biological Science Technician and other BLM staff who make up the FONM Weed Crew who will provide direction and guidance to the associates. Work will be conducted the range areas of FONM where an ongoing cleanup is being conducted to remove unexploded ordnance and to ensure the area is safe to be transferred to BLM. This is a field position and most work will be performed outdoors, often off trail, and in all weather conditions.

They are looking for students skilled in electronics, software and web development, and a test sailor to assist us in the work with wind propelled boats for long distance journeys and marine research. UC Davis Chemistry Research Experience

The UC Davis ChemEnergy REU aims to provide diverse undergraduate students with a unique 10-week research experience tackling state-of-the-art research problems in energy, materials, catalysis, and biotechnology. REU students will live on campus and work alongside faculty and graduate students to gain a unique perspective on modern chemistry research. Students will also network with faculty and students in weekly social activities, participate in field trips to local companies and a weekend trip to Lake Tahoe, and receive training to improve science communication skills.

Condor Recovery in Pinnacles National Park

The American Conservation Experience is seeking one full-time intern (age 18 or older) to assist with monitoring captive and wild California condors based at Pinnacles National Park. The primary duties of the intern will be:
- tracking, monitoring and recording condor movements, behaviors and interactions;
- observing and recording feeding behaviors;
- speaking with the public and local community members about a high-profile endangered species which is reliant on public and private lands and hunting and ranching operations for its recovery;
- monitoring breeding behavior and nests;
- handling animal carcasses used for bait stations;
- maintenance of equipment and facilities; and
- other duties as assigned to gain experience with other work groups such as habitat restoration and public education and outreach.

Marine Mammal Internship

This internship, with the California Wildlife Center in Malibu, will provide an exciting and challenging educational experience in the marine mammal field, while also allowing for additional hands-on experience with other native wildlife. The interns will be working closely with the Marine Mammal staff in all aspects of stranding response and marine mammal rehabilitation; including logistics, assessment, capture/restraint, transport to the marine mammal rehabilitation facility, animal care, educating the public and public relations. In addition, interns will provide support to CWC Hospital staff in animal husbandry tasks for avian and terrestrial wildlife.

Monterey Bay Regional Ocean Science REU

Program Dates:June 6-August 12, 2016.
Students selected for the REU conduct 10 weeks of independent research under the supervision of a research mentor. In addition, students complete a suite of professional development workshops and training. The summer culminates with our celebratory Summer Research Symposium.
Partner organizations include: CSUMB, Hopkins Marine Station, Naval Postgraduate School, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. Students DO NOT have to be a marine science major to apply. Students can conduct research under one of four themes: Oceanography, Marine Ecology/Biology, Marine Engineering, or Marine Geology.

Michigan State University - Undergraduate Summer Research Experience in Plant Genomics

Dates: May 22-July 30, 2016 Stipend: $5,250
Interns in the Plant Genomics @ MSU REU program will be embedded within a host lab and undertake a 10-week mentored research project under the direct supervision of a faculty member together with either a postdoctoral associate or graduate student mentor. Interns will participate fully in host lab events, including group meetings and activities with the aim of simulating life as a new graduate student. In addition, interns will attend seminars and networking events with MSU faculty and graduate students that will introduce them to diverse research projects and provide information regarding life in graduate school and careers within STEM. Interns will also attend a series of workshops designed to advance their professional development including, responsible conduct of research and research ethics, presentation skills, scientific writing, and GRE test taking strategies. During the final week of the program, interns will present their research in poster and oral formats.

The Duke University Marine Lab is pleased to offer scholarships for two non-Duke undergraduates covering tuition & fees, room & board, books, travel to Beaufort, and full support for participation in a Beaufort Signature travel course to Panama during a semester of study, Fall 2016 in Beaufort North Carolina. The Central Coast branch of the Groundwater Resources Association of California (GRAC) has scholarship funds up to $2500 available for distribution to college and graduate students performing research on groundwater resources in the Central Coast branch region (generally, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties).
