Hydrology Internship for USGS in Santa Cruz Office

The USGS California Water Science Center is seeking a graduate or undergraduate student for their Student Trainee in Hydrology position. The selected candidate will perform routine and recurring development assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding of functions, principles, practices, and methods used in the area of Hydrology.
Duties include:
-Gathers basic hydrologic data concerning any one or combination of four areas, i.e., quantity, quality, availability, and movement and distribution of water.
-Develops hydrologic and precipitation data for current projects.
-Collects and processes data to be used in computing stream discharge, determining ground water availability or calculating sediment, chemical, or biological concentrations and physical characteristics.

Backcountry Trails Program - CA Conservation Corps

CCC is looking for 95 diverse women and men (18-26yrs old) who are willing to leave behind the conveniences of modern life and venture into the mountains to spend five exhausting months doing some of the most challenging and ultimately rewarding work of their lives. They are putting together six crews located in wilderness areas throughout California that will be living in backcountry camps and performing trail work. CCC is a highly structured, regimented program that focuses on hard work, personal growth, community development...and some adventure.

Plant Genome REU @ Cornell University

BTI's Plant Genome Research Program (PGRP) is looking for 20 exceptional undergraduate students from across the U.S. to intern in BTI, Cornell and USDA laboratories for 10 weeks over summer break. Housing, travel, meals, and a $5200 stipend will be provided.

The PGRP is an incredible opportunity for students to work alongside an international community of scientists dedicated to developing innovative solutions to feed a growing world population, while protecting the environment, through plant research and bioinformatics.

Marine Science REU @ Oregon State University

From Estuaries to the Deep Sea . . .
Oregon State University is proud to announce the availability of paid research internships for 20 students during each summer. Ten students will be located at the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) on the Pacific coast in Newport and another 10 located at the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) in Corvallis.

Latino Heritage Internship Program

Environment for the Americas-a Colorado-based nonprofit-is partnering with the National Park Service to provide dozens of paid summer internships across the country this summer. Please find attached the flyers for the Mosaics in Science Diversity Internship Program (mosaicsinscience.org) and for the Latino Heritage Internship Program (latinoheritageintern.com). Other positions range from biology and cultural resources to night sky interpretation and air quality monitoring.
All internships are paid and include housing. Please distribute freely to students or organizations and do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Mosaics in Science Internship Program

The Mosaics in Science Internship Program provides youth that are under-represented in natural resource science career fields with on-the-ground, science-based, work experience with the National Park Service. Established in 2013, this multidisciplinary program provides opportunities to work on inventorying and monitoring, research, GIS and other technologies, and interpretation and education projects. After the internships, a career workshop is held in Washington DC where the interns present the results of their work, are exposed to different science careers, and develop skills to apply for a federal job. The program is administered by the Geologic Resources Division, in collaboration with other NPS Natural Resource Stewardship and Science offices, the NPS Youth Programs Division, and in partnership with Environment for the Americas and Greening Youth Foundation

Wildlife Field Assistant at Santa Lucia Conservancy

The Santa Lucia Conservancy is conducting novel and essential habitat restoration activities and wildlife research in the Central Coast. As a small staff, we like to partner with invested and passionate volunteers to increase our reach at the landscape scale. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn new field techniques and research skills for wildlife ecology. Projects include but are not limited to: bird banding, wildlife telemetry tracking, wildlife camera data collection and management, mapping, vegetation sampling, and pond sampling.

Climate Change Internships in National Parks

The National Park Service Climate Change 
Response Program and the University of Washington are pleased to announce paid summer internship positions to address 
climate change in national parks!
The George Melendez Wright Initiative for Young Leaders in Climate Change (YLCC) offers twelve positions for the summer of 2016 in national parks and program offices all around the country -- from Florida to Alaska, and Washington DC to American Samoa.
Eligible students are highly accomplished graduate students and upper-level undergraduates (current juniors and seniors). Applicants must be US citizens or nationals, and be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program.
Students who complete their internship and academic requirements with a high degree of success are subsequently eligible to be hired by the NPS, Fish & Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Land Management without having to compete for jobs.

Monterey County Public Health Lab Internship

The Monterey County Public Health Laboratory is seeking students interested in environmental and clinical microbiology and environmental chemistry for an unpaid, part-time position for flexible hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The position would provide an opportunity for students to learn about the overall work of the laboratory and benefit to the community. Students would be required to interview for the position and to meet pre-hire requirements for regular PHL County employees including finger printing and TB (tuberculosis) testing.

Marine Mammal Internship
Application deadline: ASAP

This internship,  with the California Wildlife Center in Malibu, will provide an exciting and challenging educational experience in the marine mammal field, while also allowing for additional hands-on experience with other native wildlife. The interns will be working closely with the Marine Mammal staff in all aspects of stranding response and marine mammal rehabilitation; including logistics, assessment, capture/restraint, transport to the marine mammal rehabilitation facility, animal care, educating the public and public relations. In addition, interns will provide support to CWC Hospital staff in animal husbandry tasks for avian and terrestrial wildlife.

Congressional Internship Program

Program Dates:June 6-August 12, 2016.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's internship program is a tremendous opportunity for Latino college students and recent graduates (both undergrad and post-grad).

During CHCI's paid summer and semester internships, promising Latino undergraduate students experience what it's like to work in a congressional office, while participating in weekly professional and leadership development and civic engagement through community service.

Monterey Bay Regional Ocean Science REU
Application deadline: 02/15/16
Program Dates:June 6-August 12, 2016.

Students selected for the REU conduct 10 weeks of independent research under the supervision of a research mentor. In addition, students complete a suite of professional development workshops and training. The summer culminates with our celebratory Summer Research Symposium.

Partner organizations include: CSUMB, Hopkins Marine Station, Naval Postgraduate School, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. 

Students DO NOT have to be a marine science major to apply. Students can conduct research under one of four themes: Oceanography, Marine Ecology/Biology, Marine Engineering, or Marine Geology.

ACT Summer Internship Program

ACT is offering paid 8-10 week internships from June 6, 2016-August 5, 2016. They support students in their transition to the workforce by providing hands-on experience through our annual internship program. The program allows graduate and undergraduate students to work in their field and potentially gain full-time employment based on performance and ACT organization growth.

University of  Washington - Undergraduate Summer Research Experience in Environmental Health
Application deadline: 02/01/16

Dates: June 20th-August 19th, 2016  in Seattle
Stipend: $5,200

The UW Environmental Health Research Experience Program (EHREP) is a funded, 10 week summer experience for undergraduates with an interest in environmental health sciences. EHREP provides students with hands on experience in laboratories of leading researchers, introduces them to key environmental and occupational health issues while offering research exposure that will help them become competitive for graduate school.  Students will work full-time under the supervision of a faculty mentor and will receive a stipend of $5,200.
One of the goals of this program is to increase and diversify the pool of future applicants for graduate study in this field, leading to more outstanding scientists selecting Environmental Health Sciences as a career focus.  We strongly encourage students who are underrepresented in the sciences to apply.

Michigan State University  - Undergraduate Summer Research Experience in Plant Genomics
Application deadline: 02/17/16

Dates: May 22-July 30, 2016  
Stipend: $5,250

Interns in the Plant Genomics @ MSU REU program will be embedded within a host lab and undertake a 10-week mentored research project under the direct supervision of a faculty member together with either a postdoctoral associate or graduate student mentor. Interns will participate fully in host lab events, including group meetings and activities with the aim of simulating life as a new graduate student. In addition, interns will attend seminars and networking events with MSU faculty and graduate students that will introduce them to diverse research projects and provide information regarding life in graduate school and careers within STEM. Interns will also attend a series of workshops designed to advance their professional development including, responsible conduct of research and research ethics, presentation skills, scientific writing, and GRE test taking strategies. During the final week of the program, interns will present their research in poster and oral formats.

Marin Municipal Water District - Watershed Interns

2016 Internship, Full time

Marin Municipal Water District has a need for Watershed Aides, to serve in one of five distinct areas.  These positions are all within the Watershed Management programs of the District's Facilities & Watershed Management Division, and are in the five areas of: 
-Vegetation Management,
-Volunteer Management/Environmental Education & Community Engagement,
-Watershed Maintenance,
-Watershed Protection/Ranger Aide, or
-Fisheries Management

These positions are all for full-time (40 hours per week), temporary Watershed Aides for terms of six (6) months in duration. The days and hours worked also vary by position and need.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Latinos in Technology Scholarship
Application Deadline: 03/16/15

This program will give 100 Latino students the support they need to graduate from college; an educational opportunity they would not have access to otherwise. By implementing this program in Silicon Valley, they will be able to directly address the local education gap among Latinos as well as begin to close the high tech employment diversity gap. The award is up to $30,000 over up to 3 years.

US Dept of Energy Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program
Application Deadline: 01/29/16

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. Stipends start at $600 per week and eligible Fellows will receive an additional travel and housing allowance.

NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship
Application Deadline: 01/29/16

The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($700/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and academic assistance (up to a maximum of $9,500) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the Scholars with "hands-on"/ practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory NOAA Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

NOAA Educational Partnership Program Undergraduate Scholarship

The EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholarship Program provides scholarships for two years of undergraduate study to rising junior undergraduate students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields that directly support NOAA's mission. Participants conduct research at a NOAA facility during two paid summer internships. Since 2001, over 186 students have completed the program and over 75% go on to graduate school.Students attending Minority Serving Institutions as defined by the US Department of Education (Hispanic Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, Alaskan-Native Serving Institutions, and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions) are eligible to apply for the program.

Groundwater Research Scholarship
Groundwater Resource Association of California Scholarship
The Central Coast branch of the Groundwater Resources Association of California (GRAC) has scholarship funds up to $2500 available for distribution to college and graduate students performing research on groundwater resources in the Central Coast branch region (generally, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties). GRAC wishes to support student research related to groundwater issues, water resources management, water recycling and other proposals related to groundwater research.

COAST Student Travel Awards
COAST Scholarship
The Council of Ocean Affairs, Science & Technology (COAST) provides travel support for CSU undergraduate and graduate students to present the results of original research at marine, estuarine and coastal-themed scientific meetings and conferences, or special thematic sessions of more general scientific meetings. Please note COAST has new guidelines and policies regarding travel reimbursements as of August 1, 2014. See award announcement for full details.
