Red Sea Summer Internship Program
Application deadline: 01/15/16

The three-week program will expose undergraduates and Master's students to several aspects of Red Sea reef science, including genomics, ecology, biological oceanography, and microbiology. The course includes fieldwork, labwork, lectures, and data workshops.

Successful applicants will receive full funding for travel, private bedroom and bath in shared residential suite, academic credit, and a stipend for a three-week period of study at KAUST from 22 July to 12 August, 2016. There are no fees associated with the course.

2016 MATE/UNOLS Marine Science Internship
Application deadline: 01/06/16

This spring/summer (approximately mid-March to mid-September 2016), the MATE Center and the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet will sponsor one marine technical internship onboard the research vessels :R/V Kilo Moana and R/V Sikuliaq. The intern will work with marine technicians on shore and at sea, learning how to operate and maintain a variety of scientific and navigational equipment in support of shipboard scientific research. The internship will begin in Honolulu, HI and end in Seward, Alaska. The exact schedule through September will be determined before the acceptance date, but will involve work on the R/V Kilo Moana and R/V Sikuliaq and at their on-shore facilities. Internship projects will be dependent on the funded science but previous interns have worked on cruises to support science ranging from chemical oceanography, marine biology, GIS/bathymetric surveys (seafloor mapping), geological studies, work with ROVs and much more! The position will last 6 months, and students will receive a stipend of $500 per week, reimbursement for travel expenses, and on-station housing while ashore.

Climate Change Internships in National Parks

The National Park Service Climate Change Response Program and the University of Washington are pleased to announce paid summer internship positions to address climate change in national parks!

The George Melendez Wright Initiative for Young Leaders in Climate Change (YLCC) offers twelve positions for the summer of 2016 in national parks and program offices all around the country -- from Florida to Alaska, and Washington DC to American Samoa.
Eligible students are highly accomplished graduate students and upper-level undergraduates (current juniors and seniors). Applicants must be US 
citizens or nationals, and be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program.

Students who complete their internship and academic requirements with a high degree of success are subsequently eligible to be hired by the NPS, Fish & Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Land Management without having to compete for jobs.

Fisheries Biological Technician

The Tongass National Forest is seeking candidates eligible for a permanent seasonal Biological Science Technician (Fisheries) position to be located at the Petersburg Supervisor's Office in Petersburg, Alaska.The primary duties of this position include field data collection and preliminary data analysis for established monitoring projects that help determine the effects of implementing the Forest Plan on aquatic resources. Fieldwork is located throughout the Tongass National Forest.

Epidemiology & Informatics Fellowship Opportunities 

CDC/CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship
CSTE, in collaboration with CDC, the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), established the Applied Epidemiology Fellowship to train recent graduates in the expanding field of applied epidemiology. The goal of the fellowship is to provide a high quality training experience and to secure long-term career placement for fellows at the state or local level. Participating fellows will receive two years of on-the-job training at a state or local health agency under the guidance of an experienced mentor. The fellowship's mission is to meet the nation's ongoing need for applied epidemiology workforce capacity in state and local health departments through a national fellowship-training program.

FishWise Independent Contractor: Fishery Improvement Project Research

LANL is looking for a talented recent graduate with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in GIS and Spatial analysis. This is a 2-year position at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Earth and Environmental Science Division. North Pacific Research Board Graduate Student Research Awards
Application deadline: 2/12/16

In May 2016, NPRB will award six or more Master's or Doctoral Graduate Student Research Awards of $25,000 each to qualified students. Students must address scientific, technological, and socio-economic issues relating to the research themes identified in the 2005 NPRB Science Plan. Students are limited to one award per degree. Award funds may be used for graduate student stipend and standard benefits, tuition or required university fees, or for specific research expenses such as travel, supplies, and laboratory analyses. Indirect costs are not allowed. One hundred percent of the funds must be used for the benefit of the graduate student, who will determine how the funds are divided among the allowable uses.
To be eligible for a NPRB Graduate Student Research Award, students must be enrolled in or accepted by a graduate degree program at an accredited university or college by the application deadline. Read the full eligibility requirements before applying.

Klamath Coho Habitat Restoration Programs Grants

The Bureau of Reclamation Klamath Coho Habitat Restoration Program has approximately $2.5 million available over 4 years to enhance the survival and recovery of the Southern Oregon/Northern California Coast (SONCC) coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), a species listed as "threatened" pursuant to the federal Endangered Species Act. The grant program will be coordinated closely between Reclamation, the National Marine Fisheries Service, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and internally with NFWF program management of the Klamath River Coho Enhancement Fund which provides funding in the same geography.  Grant funding will be provided to implement projects that enhance the survival and recovery of SONCC coho salmon.

Groundwater Research Scholarship
Groundwater Resource Association of California Scholarship
The Central Coast branch of the Groundwater Resources Association of California (GRAC) has scholarship funds up to $2500 available for distribution to college and graduate students performing research on groundwater resources in the Central Coast branch region (generally, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties). GRAC wishes to support student research related to groundwater issues, water resources management, water recycling and other proposals related to groundwater research.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Ph.D. Positions - Watershed Hydrology at UC Riverside

The Watershed Hydrology Lab in the Department of Environmental Sciences at UCR is seeking two PhD students for projects on watershed dynamics and fluvial geomorphic change.  One project is an investigation into climatic drivers of suspended sediment dynamics across the western US; the other involves a combination of hydrologic, geomorphic and sedimentological strands of inquiry to decipher the controls on estuarine channel morphology.  Results of these projects will inform a wide range of applications including water quality and coastal resiliency management and fundamental investigations into geophysical cycles.
 
Competitive applicants will have a strong backgrounds in quantitative approaches to the physical sciences with exceptional analytical and writing skills.  A previous master's degree in hydrology, earth/environmental sciences or a related discipline is preferred, but not required.  Interested parties should contact Dr. Andrew Gray via email at andrew.gray@ucr.edu with a statement of intent and CV prior to 12/1/2015.

2016 Watershed Science Master Class 
January 17-22nd, 2016 in Tuscon, Arizona

The course will be held at University of Arizona's Biosphere 2 facility, outside of Tucson, Arizona. Double occupancy housing, all meals while on site, and shuttle transportation to/from Tucson International Airport are included in the course fee.

This week long course will focus on hydrological and biogeochemical watershed processes including theory, experimental design, and modeling. Differing perspectives will be provided by leading scientists in the field. Course learning objectives include:
  • Rainfall-runoff processes and landscape hydrology
  • Combined use of hydrometric and tracer approaches
  • Simulation models for data synthesis, hypothesis testing and scenario development
