INTERNSHIPS & JOBS
Climate Change Internships in National Parks

The National Park Service Climate Change 
Response Program and the University of Washington are pleased to announce paid summer internship positions to address 
climate change in national parks!
The George Melendez Wright Initiative for Young Leaders in Climate Change (YLCC) offers twelve positions for the summer of 2016 in national parks and program offices all around the country -- from Florida to Alaska, and Washington DC to American Samoa.
Eligible students are highly accomplished graduate students and upper-level undergraduates (current juniors and seniors). Applicants must be US citizens or nationals, and be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program.
Students who complete their internship and academic requirements with a high degree of success are subsequently eligible to be hired by the NPS, Fish & Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Land Management without having to compete for jobs.

Science Undergrad Lab Internship (SULI) program 
Application deadline: 01/08/16

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.
Applications for the SULI program are solicited annually for three separate internship terms. Internship appointments are 10 weeks in duration for the Summer Term (May through August) or 16 weeks in duration for the Fall (August through December) and Spring (January through May) Terms. Each DOE laboratory/facility offers different research opportunities; not all DOE laboratories/facilities offer internships during the Fall and Spring Terms.

Monterey County Public Health Lab Internship

The Monterey County Public Health Laboratory is seeking students interested in environmental and clinical microbiology and environmental chemistry for an unpaid, part-time position for flexible hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The position would provide an opportunity for students to learn about the overall work of the laboratory and benefit to the community. Students would be required to interview for the position and to meet pre-hire requirements for regular PHL County employees including finger printing and TB (tuberculosis) testing.

Celebrate Shorebirds Internship

Environment for the Americas (EFTA) invites you to apply for America's Great Outdoors - Celebrate Shorebirds internship opportunity.
This project, Celebra las Aves Playeras (Celebrate Shorebirds), is a comprehensive approach to engaging Latinos in natural resource careers and conservation action through internships at eight sites. EFTA will recruit Latino interns from colleges and local communities, especially youth who live near research sites to help create long-term relationships between agencies and nearby Latino communities. Interns will serve as role models, and increase awareness of conservation issues and careers in conservation. They will also engage in field research, data collection, and environmental education at sites in California, Oregon, Colorado, and Alaska where monitoring shorebird populations is a priority.

Marine Mammal Internship

This internship,  with the California Wildlife Center in Malibu, will provide an exciting and challenging educational experience in the marine mammal field, while also allowing for additional hands-on experience with other native wildlife. The interns will be working closely with the Marine Mammal staff in all aspects of stranding response and marine mammal rehabilitation; including logistics, assessment, capture/restraint, transport to the marine mammal rehabilitation facility, animal care, educating the public and public relations. In addition, interns will provide support to CWC Hospital staff in animal husbandry tasks for avian and terrestrial wildlife.

Congressional Internship Program

Program Dates:June 6-August 12, 2016.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's internship program is a tremendous opportunity for Latino college students and recent graduates (both undergrad and post-grad).

During CHCI's paid summer and semester internships, promising Latino undergraduate students experience what it's like to work in a congressional office, while participating in weekly professional and leadership development and civic engagement through community service.

Monterey Bay Regional Ocean Science REU
Application deadline: 02/15/16
Program Dates:June 6-August 12, 2016.

Students selected for the REU conduct 10 weeks of independent research under the supervision of a research mentor. In addition, students complete a suite of professional development workshops and training. The summer culminates with our celebratory Summer Research Symposium.

Partner organizations include: CSUMB, Hopkins Marine Station, Naval Postgraduate School, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. 

Students DO NOT have to be a marine science major to apply. Students can conduct research under one of four themes: Oceanography, Marine Ecology/Biology, Marine Engineering, or Marine Geology.

ACT Summer Internship Program

ACT is offering paid 8-10 week internships from June 6, 2016-August 5, 2016. They support students in their transition to the workforce by providing hands-on experience through our annual internship program. The program allows graduate and undergraduate students to work in their field and potentially gain full-time employment based on performance and ACT organization growth.

Georgia South University - Undergraduate Summer Research Experience in Health Disparities

The initiative is a 6-week summer program at Georgia Southern University hosted by the Rural Health Research Institute in collaboration with the Center for Rural Health and Health Disparities at Mercer University. The initiative, called DESRE (Disparities Elimination Summer Research Experience), is a paid, hands-on research experience for undergraduate and graduate students.

University of  Washington - Undergraduate Summer Research Experience in Environmental Health
Application deadline: 02/01/16

Dates: June 20th-August 19th, 2016  in Seattle
Stipend: $5,200

The UW Environmental Health Research Experience Program (EHREP) is a funded, 10 week summer experience for undergraduates with an interest in environmental health sciences. EHREP provides students with hands on experience in laboratories of leading researchers, introduces them to key environmental and occupational health issues while offering research exposure that will help them become competitive for graduate school.  Students will work full-time under the supervision of a faculty mentor and will receive a stipend of $5,200.
One of the goals of this program is to increase and diversify the pool of future applicants for graduate study in this field, leading to more outstanding scientists selecting Environmental Health Sciences as a career focus.  We strongly encourage students who are underrepresented in the sciences to apply.

Michigan State University  - Undergraduate Summer Research Experience in Plant Genomics
Application deadline: 02/17/16

Dates: May 22-July 30, 2016  
Stipend: $5,250

Interns in the Plant Genomics @ MSU REU program will be embedded within a host lab and undertake a 10-week mentored research project under the direct supervision of a faculty member together with either a postdoctoral associate or graduate student mentor. Interns will participate fully in host lab events, including group meetings and activities with the aim of simulating life as a new graduate student. In addition, interns will attend seminars and networking events with MSU faculty and graduate students that will introduce them to diverse research projects and provide information regarding life in graduate school and careers within STEM. Interns will also attend a series of workshops designed to advance their professional development including, responsible conduct of research and research ethics, presentation skills, scientific writing, and GRE test taking strategies. During the final week of the program, interns will present their research in poster and oral formats.

Research Assistant at NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center: Rockfish Early Life History

Principal Investigator Neosha Kashef, research associate at UC Santa Cruz and NOAA affiliate, is investigating the early life history of rockfishes. There are currently two opportunities to contribute to this research:
  • Investigating the effects of hypoxia on rockfish fecundity
  • Ontogeny of burst swimming in larval rockfishes

Los Alamos National Laboratory - Remote Sensing, Spacial Analysis, & Field Technical Support

LANL is looking for a talented recent graduate with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in GIS and Spatial analysis. This is a 2-year position at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Earth and Environmental Science Division. The position entails development and application of Geographical Information System, GIS, remote sensing and spatial analysis techniques in support of a range of geology, geomorphology and ecology projects. The successful candidate will also undertake periodic field work, as well as data management activities including development of meta-data and searchable data products in support of project data portals and servers.

Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Program - GIS Interactive Mapping Project Intern

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) - STEM Summer Internship Program

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate Office of University Programs sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. The program provides students with quality research experiences at federal research facilities located across the country and allows students the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals. It is open to undergraduate and graduate students in a broad spectrum of HS-STEM Disciplines and DHS mission-relevant Research Areas.

Monterey Institute for  Research in Astronomy (MIRA)Winter Internship Program

The Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy (MIRA) offers winter intern positions for students interested in astronomy and astrophysics. Interns work one-on-one with research astronomers on current research problems including star formation, gravitational lenses, astronomical instrumentation, earth-threatening asteroids, and stellar atmospheres of unusual stars. Specific work depends on current staff interests and intern qualifications.

Typical interns are juniors or seniors but well-qualified lower classmen have also been successful. A successful candidate will have a background in science and mathematics and an interest in physical sciences, engineering, or computer science.Most of the internship will take place at the MIRA campus in Marina (within walking distance of CSUMB's campus) but some all-night observing sessions with the 36-inch research telescope take place at the Oliver Observing Station atop Chews Ridge.

GEAR UP Program Science Advising and Tutoring

The GEAR UP program at CSUMB is currently hiring Academic Tutors and one Student Advisor. Click the position title for more information.

Under the direction and supervision of the GEAR UP Site Coordinator and/or College and Career Advisor, the academic tutor will work with students in small groups or in a one-on-one setting and provide academic assistance in academic areas. Academic Tutors work part-time up to 20 hours per week during academic periods for $10/hr.

Under the direction and supervision of the GEAR UP Site Coordinator and/or College and Career Advisor, the Student Advisor will provide support to students to ensure they remain on-track for admission to a four-year university or community college, and motivate them to consider post-secondary educational opportunities.Student Advisors work part-time up to 20 hours per week during academic periods for $10/hr.
Marin Municipal Water District - Watershed Interns

Marin Municipal Water District has a need for Watershed Aides, to serve in one of five distinct areas.  These positions are all within the Watershed Management programs of the District's Facilities & Watershed Management Division, and are in the five areas of:

MEarth NatureConnect Intern Position

The NatureConnect intern will assist in maintaining native plant nursery and mature native plant habitat and active restoration plots. Activities could include: watering, weeding, propagating and off site restoration. Latinos in Technology Scholarship

This program will give 100 Latino students the support they need to graduate from college; an educational opportunity they would not have access to otherwise. By implementing this program in Silicon Valley, they will be able to directly address the local education gap among Latinos as well as begin to close the high tech employment diversity gap. The award is up to $30,000 over up to 3 years.

Ocean 180 Video Challenge
Application Deadline: 12/11/15

The Ocean 180 Video Challenge is offering an opportunity for ocean scientists to demonstrate their communication skills and connect with classrooms around the world. Ocean 180 challenges scientists to create short (3 minute) video abstracts that effectively communicate the meaning, significance, and relevance of published research to general, non-scientific audiences.
 
Scientists of all career stages, undergraduates to senior scientists, are eligible to participate and compete for $9,000 in cash prizes.

US Dept of Energy Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program
Application Deadline: 01/29/16

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. Stipends start at $600 per week and eligible Fellows will receive an additional travel and housing allowance.

NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship
Application Deadline: 01/29/16

The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($700/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and academic assistance (up to a maximum of $9,500) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the Scholars with "hands-on"/ practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory NOAA Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

NOAA Educational Partnership Program Undergraduate Scholarship

The EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholarship Program provides scholarships for two years of undergraduate study to rising junior undergraduate students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields that directly support NOAA's mission. Participants conduct research at a NOAA facility during two paid summer internships. Since 2001, over 186 students have completed the program and over 75% go on to graduate school.Students attending Minority Serving Institutions as defined by the US Department of Education (Hispanic Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, Alaskan-Native Serving Institutions, and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions) are eligible to apply for the program.

Barry Goldwater Undergraduate Scholarship 2016
Application Due for Nomination: 12/15/15
Final Application Deadline: 01/22/16

This prestigious and highly competitive award aims to "encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields."
Students must have at least one full academic year remaining in their undergraduate education as of September 2016. Goldwater Scholars are selected based on: 1) their "demonstrated potential for and commitment to a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering," and 2) "outstanding academic performance." Students need to be from STEM disciplines, must have completed substantive undergraduate research (a key essay is a two-page manuscript of completed research), and have a high GPA (if overall GPA is below a 3.7 student must provide a compelling reason).

The university can put forward the applications of up to four students for this scholarship. 

Here's the timeline:
· November 16 (2015) : Faculty members send student names to Goldwater nominator (John Banks: jebanks@csumb.edu).
· December 15: Student sends a draft of their research essay and application materials, mentor approval, and names of 3 reference writers to the Goldwater nominator.
· December 18: The Goldwater Nominating Committee invites four finalists to submit a full application based on the draft research essay, application materials, and mentor approval.
· January 16 (2016) : Student submits a final draft of research essay and application materials to nominating committee and faculty mentor.
· January 22: Student submits final application.
· January 26: Recommendations (3) due.

Dr. Nancy Foster Graduate Scholarship Program
Application Due: 12/10/15

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program provides support for master's and doctoral studies in oceanography, marine biology, maritime archaeology and all other science, engineering, social science and resource management disciplines involving ocean and coastal areas, particularly by women and members of minority groups.
 * Scholarship covers tuition and a living stipend.
 * Travel funds support a program collaboration at a national marine sanctuary field office or another NOAA office.
  * Training includes science communication, stewardship and how to become a national marine sanctuary ambassador.

Groundwater Research Scholarship
Groundwater Resource Association of California Scholarship
The Central Coast branch of the Groundwater Resources Association of California (GRAC) has scholarship funds up to $2500 available for distribution to college and graduate students performing research on groundwater resources in the Central Coast branch region (generally, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties). GRAC wishes to support student research related to groundwater issues, water resources management, water recycling and other proposals related to groundwater research.

COAST Scholarship
The Council of Ocean Affairs, Science & Technology (COAST) provides travel support for CSU undergraduate and graduate students to present the results of original research at marine, estuarine and coastal-themed scientific meetings and conferences, or special thematic sessions of more general scientific meetings. Please note COAST has new guidelines and policies regarding travel reimbursements as of August 1, 2014. See award announcement for full details.
