The Monterey  Bay National Marine Sanctuary is becoming an increasingly critical safe haven for shorebirds, who now face multiple threats along the flyway.  The red knot, subject of The Narrow Edge, has been seen not that long ago in the Elkhorn Slough.

Fertilizer Research Conference  
November 5-6

The California Department of Food and Agriculture's (CDFA) Fertilizer Research and Education Program (FREP) and the Western Plant Health Association (WPHA) are hosting their 23rd annual Fertilizer Research Conference at the Embassy Suites in Seaside, California, on November 5 and 6, 2015. This event brings together industry professionals and academic researchers to learn about the latest research and sound management of fertilizing materials.

Central Coast GIS Day - November 18th

Join us at the MPC Satellite campus in Marina for the Central Coast GIS Day. Learn about Geographic Information Systems and how they are being used in our area. We will be hearing presentations from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC), Monterey Peninsula College (MPC), SeaSpatial, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) and there will also be a live Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) demo.

Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Program - GIS Interactive Mapping Project Intern

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) - STEM Summer Internship Program

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate Office of University Programs sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. The program provides students with quality research experiences at federal research facilities located across the country and allows students the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals. It is open to undergraduate and graduate students in a broad spectrum of HS-STEM Disciplines and DHS mission-relevant Research Areas.

Monterey Institute for  Research in Astronomy (MIRA)Winter Internship Program

The Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy (MIRA) offers winter intern positions for students interested in astronomy and astrophysics. Interns work one-on-one with research astronomers on current research problems including star formation, gravitational lenses, astronomical instrumentation, earth-threatening asteroids, and stellar atmospheres of unusual stars. Specific work depends on current staff interests and intern qualifications.

Typical interns are juniors or seniors but well-qualified lower classmen have also been successful. A successful candidate will have a background in science and mathematics and an interest in physical sciences, engineering, or computer science.Most of the internship will take place at the MIRA campus in Marina (within walking distance of CSUMB's campus) but some all-night observing sessions with the 36-inch research telescope take place at the Oliver Observing Station atop Chews Ridge.

Research Experience for Model-Based Reasoning in STEM Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER)
Application deadline: 11/30/15

The DBER REU is model-based reasoning in STEM education that includes mentors whom specialize in biology education research. Students will be selected by mid-December to participate in a 3-week part-time virtual program in January, where they will earn $500, followed by a 9-week in-person program over the summer, where they will earn another $4500.

During January Jump-start, students meet their mentors and each other on Skype, read DBER-themed papers with an online collaboration tool, begin to develop their research projects, and complete ethics and human subjects training. When they come to RIT in June, they are ready to jump into their projects, and they feel less apprehensive because the people and projects are already somewhat familiar.

During the summer, they participate in their mentored research projects, a weekly DBER methods workshop, a professional development series, and numerous social activities. The experience culminates with the campus-wide RIT Undergraduate Research Symposium, where all participants will have the opportunity to present their work.

GEAR UP Program Science Advising and Tutoring

The GEAR UP program at CSUMB is currently hiring Academic Tutors and one Student Advisor. Click the position title for more information.

Under the direction and supervision of the GEAR UP Site Coordinator and/or College and Career Advisor, the academic tutor will work with students in small groups or in a one-on-one setting and provide academic assistance in academic areas. Academic Tutors work part-time up to 20 hours per week during academic periods for $10/hr.

Under the direction and supervision of the GEAR UP Site Coordinator and/or College and Career Advisor, the Student Advisor will provide support to students to ensure they remain on-track for admission to a four-year university or community college, and motivate them to consider post-secondary educational opportunities.Student Advisors work part-time up to 20 hours per week during academic periods for $10/hr.
Watershed Management Experiential Learning Internships

The Water Resources and Policy Initiatives has announced a "call for applications" for the USDA-funded Watershed Management Experiential Learning for USDA Careers Internship Program for the 2015-2016 year. The Program provides paid Watershed Management Internships for full-time students that are enrolled at any of the 23 California State University (CSU) campuses and 113 California Community Colleges(CCC).

The objective of this collaborative program is to measurably increase the encouragement, retention, graduation, and USDA career attainment of underrepresented CSU/CCC students while increasing student research skills that ensure our national forests and private working lands are conserved, restored, and made more resilient to climate change, while simultaneously enhancing the sustainability of the Nation's water resources.The program targets students underrepresented in the USDA workforce; however all ethnicities are welcome to apply. Applicants should have a sincere interest in working for the USDA.

International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Student Fellowship

The International Society of Arboriculture summer fellowship provides students with an invaluable opportunity to work with leaders in arboricultural research and education from around the world. The fellowship recipient will help develop books, articles, videos, podcasts, surveys, presentations, and seminars.
The fellowship provides a paid stipend for a minimum of 10 weeks, as well as paid travel, lodging, registration, and meals at the 2016 ISA conference in Fort Worth, Texas.

Marin Municipal Water District - Watershed Interns

2016 Internship, Full time

Marin Municipal Water District has a need for Watershed Aides, to serve in one of five distinct areas.  These positions are all within the Watershed Management programs of the District's Facilities & Watershed Management Division, and are in the five areas of: 
-Vegetation Management,
-Volunteer Management/Environmental Education & Community Engagement,
-Watershed Maintenance,
-Watershed Protection/Ranger Aide, or
-Fisheries Management

These positions are all for full-time (40 hours per week), temporary Watershed Aides for terms of six (6) months in duration. The days and hours worked also vary by position and need.

Native Plant Nursury Internship

2016 Internship, Full time

During a one-year position at one of the nursery sites, interns will participate in all aspects of the community-based restoration nurseries alongside Nursery staff. As a nursery intern, you will be introduced to many aspects of nursery management- plant propagation, pest and disease control, and facility maintenance. Interns will gain experience in botany, horticulture, environmental education, habitat restoration, and community engagement. Interns will participate in community stewardship and gain valuable experience in the development and leadership of volunteer programs for a range of audiences. Interns are an integral part of the diverse Nursery Program and are valued participants in the Park.

MEarth NatureConnect Intern Position

The NatureConnect intern will assist in maintaining native plant nursery and mature native plant habitat and active restoration plots. Activities could include: watering, weeding, propagating and off site restoration. COAST Student Research Funding

COAST aims to increase CSU student participation in faculty-mentored marine and coastal research throughout the CSU. COAST will provide support to CSU undergraduate students ( up to $1,500) working with COAST faculty members. These awards will support students interested in pursuing marine- related careers and provide them with the opportunity to obtain the skills necessary to join a highly skilled, technologically advanced workforce while promoting and supporting CSU faculty research.

Groundwater Research Scholarship
Groundwater Resource Association of California Scholarship
The Central Coast branch of the Groundwater Resources Association of California (GRAC) has scholarship funds up to $2500 available for distribution to college and graduate students performing research on groundwater resources in the Central Coast branch region (generally, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties). GRAC wishes to support student research related to groundwater issues, water resources management, water recycling and other proposals related to groundwater research.

COAST Student Travel Awards
COAST Scholarship
The Council of Ocean Affairs, Science & Technology (COAST) provides travel support for CSU undergraduate and graduate students to present the results of original research at marine, estuarine and coastal-themed scientific meetings and conferences, or special thematic sessions of more general scientific meetings.
