Department of Homeland Security HS-STEM Summer Internships

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. The program provides students with quality research experiences at federal research facilities located across the country and allows students the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals. It is open to undergraduate and graduate students in a broad spectrum of HS-STEM disciplines and DHS mission-relevant research areas. The ultimate goal of the program is to engage a diverse, educated and skilled pool of scientists and engineers in HS-STEM areas and to promote long-term relationships between students, researchers, DHS and research facilities to enhance the HS-STEM workforce.

 

Application deadline: December 22, 2014

Undergraduate students receive a $6,000 stipend plus travel expenses.

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program
  
The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides college students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over from June 1 to August 7, 2015. This program is designed to increase awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees. The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for under-represented students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.


 

Participants will:
* Train under the mentorship of program officials and scientists to obtain valuable experience on mission-related research programs while gaining insight into how the DOE is working to meet the energy challenges of the future.
* Receive a stipend. Some participants may be eligible to receive housing and travel allowance for the duration of the program.
* Present research findings at a "Technical Forum" and tour a technical site located nearby.

 

Eligibility Requirements: 
* Be 18 years of age
* Be a citizen of the United States
* Be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university (sophomore year or higher) or had a      Ph.D. conferred on or after January 2, 2014
* Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

The Environmental Justice Coalition for Water - Central Coast Program Assistant

The Environmental Justice Coalition for Water (EJCW) seeks to fill a part-time outreach and program position in Salinas, California, and the surrounding area. This is a part-time, contract position. Roughly 15-30 hours per week. Starts in November 2014. The possibility exists of expanding job duties and hours up to and including full-time employment. 

The Central Coast Program Assistant will work under the supervision of the Executive Director and Central Coast Program Coordinator and in close partnership with and in support of EJCW member organizations and project partners. The Central Coast Program Assistant is responsible for surveying and mapping "disadvantaged" communities throughout the region, conducting outreach to Monterey and Santa Cruz County residents and other stakeholders, and working with other project partners.

Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC) Stream Designers 

CEC has the opportunity to hire Stream Designers in their Bridgeport, WV, and Columbus, OH, offices.  As a Stream Designer and Project Manager for CEC, you will manage projects and project teams to navigate today's complex environmental regulatory landscape, helping our clients to achieve and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.  In this role, you will manage and design stream and wetland restoration projects using natural stream design principles and techniques.  You will also routinely prepare stream design drawings and specifications and yearly monitoring reports; oversee construction of projects, ensuring compliance with the design criteria; and serve as a mentor to junior staff and educate them on field data collection, design parameters, and regulatory criteria.

  

The ideal candidate will have 3-10 years of experience in fluvial geomorphology, sediment transport, stream and wetland ecology, and natural channel design.  This position requires travel and field work as well as proficiency with managing projects and project budgets.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Engineering, Geology, or Hydrology;
  • Rosgen Levels I through IV training or similar;
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in designing stream and wetland restoration projects;
  • Lead designer on at least 2 natural stream channel design projects, including projects involving greater than 2,000 feet of stream channel restoration;
  • Stream construction and monitoring experience;
  • Experience determining functional improvement criteria and monitoring parameters;
  • Strong working knowledge of state and federal mitigation requirements;
  • Ability to speak and write professionally.

  • Core duties include deployment, maintenance, storm monitoring, and data collection from Hach water quality data sondes.
  • Lead volunteers in maintenance and data retrieval from water quality data sondes.
  • Assist with aquatic surveys, fish rescues, and seining activities.

California State Parks Job Announcement

Want to work outdoors?  Are you reasonably physically fit?  Do you want a job that makes a real impact on California's environment? Under the direction of a State Park Environmental Scientist, this position will participate in natural resource maintenance in parks in the Monterey District of the California Department of Parks and Recreation.  Duties include, but are not limited to various tasks associated with exotic plant and animal control, native plant propagation and planting, installing fencing, and prescribed fire preparation. 

Reporting Location:  Marina State Beach at 61 Reservation Road in Marina.

Salary and Schedule:  The starting salary is $9.98 per hour.  This is a seasonal position that can work up to 1500 hours per year.  The work schedule is Monday through Friday or Monday through Thursday (40 or 32 hours per week).

Requirements:  Applicants should be in good physical condition and should be capable of lifting 50 pounds, hiking, usually off -trail, in rugged terrain, and using and carrying various tools.  Applicants should be willing and capable of using such tools as herbicide backpack sprayers, chainsaws, and brush cutters.  Applicants should posses a valid California driver's license and have a good driving record.  A uniform is required.  An interest in natural resources is desirable.

Fisheries Technician for the California Coastal Monitoring Program (CMP)

The Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission is hiring Fisheries Technicians for the California Coastal Monitoring Program (CMP) implemented in Coastal Santa Cruz and San Mateo Counties under the guidance of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). The project is aimed at monitoring and estimating returning population sizes of Central California Coast coho salmon and steelhead south of the Golden Gate. Monitoring consists of daily spawning surveys for live fish, redds and carcasses during the spawning season (November - late March). Candidate must be willing to be exposed to noxious plants/insects/animals (poison oak, stinging nettle, ticks, rattle snakes, mountain lions, etc) for extended periods of time, be able to work in adverse conditions (wet weather, fast waters, log jams, steep terrain), and be able to wade and hike up to 5-8 miles daily for extended periods while carrying field gear. Work requires the ability to maintain footing in fast-moving water. In addition to field work the selected candidate may assist in outreach to private landowners and landholding agencies including phone calls, letter writing or meeting with landowners and presenting information to interested parties for the purposes of obtaining permission to access their property. Additional duties may include data entry and gear maintenance or repair.

A. Contact Local Presenters 
* Locate and contact local groups, organizations or individuals that might benefit  
from and participate in weekly interpretive events 
* These groups must be involved with the ecology, wildlife, Los Padres, local  
issues and/or spirit of the Big Sur representing the LPFA 
* Pitch the opportunity to present at interpretive events 
* Make contacts and share the LPFA's mission statement

B. Schedule Weekly Interpretive Events 
* Work with presenting groups to schedule a date and time for their presentation  
at Big Sur Station 
* Work with LPFA and USFS to schedule event within the Big Sur Station and/or

PADI Foundation Grants
The PADI Foundation encourages and supports underwater science, environmental projects, and education. The Foundation will fund and assist worthwhile projects that will enrich mankind's understanding of the aquatic environment and encourage sensitivity to and protection of the delicate ecological balance of underwater life. The Foundation will also fund worthwhile projects to increase understanding of sport diving physics and physiology that will benefit the general diving public and add to the scientific understanding of man's relationship and ability to survive in the underwater environment. 

Since 1992, the Foundation has awarded almost $4.0 million to almost 900 projects.  In 2014, there were almost 400 grant applications of which 55 received grants aggregating $278,950 was awarded to 55 projects. Each year, the Foundation will consider proposals with budgets up to $20,000 although the average for proposals will be on the order $5,000 to $10,000.  

The proposal deadline is February 1, 2015.
