Golden Gate Park Ecological Restoration Internship

Interns would join the Park Stewardship Restoration Program conducting resource management activities that include invasive species management, and revegetation in habitats for endangered and threatened species in the park, monitor threatened and endangered wildlife, conduct GPS/GIS work to map habitat features, write reports, and lead community volunteer programs. This is a full-time, paid internship with housing provided. It is a great stepping stone for recent undergrads and grads who need/would like hands on field experience in natural resource management.

Office of National Marine Sanctuaries Internship

Short description of duties: 
Intern will assist with education and outreach related projects with Office of National Marine Sanctuaries' California B-WET and Ocean Guardian School programs including significant responsibilities with Zero Waste Week 2015 event.  
Projects include:
Planning and implementation of Zero Waste Week Campaign for Spring 2015
Updating program documents and related information for B-WET and Ocean Guardian School websites 
Research and development of new Ocean Guardian School video that will focus on interviews with scientists in select topic areas
Planning of community screening event of documentary "DamNation" (November 9, 2014)
"Other" B-WET and Ocean Guardian program-related projects that may need intern support 

Skills needed:
Self-motivated and able to work independently as needed
Clear and thoughtful communicator both on-line and in-person as well as good writing skills
Comfortable with asking questions as well as taking charge when necessary
Must be proficient in basic computer skills including word and Excel. Basic graphic design experience is optional.
Experience in social media outreach (Twitter) is optional  

Location: 
Intern must be flexible to work from both own off-site location (home or school) as well as on-site Sanctuary office at 99 Pacific St., Bldg 455-A, Monterey, CA. 93940. Intern must have access to own personal computer with internet access and basic Mircosoft Office software. (Basic design software is helpful but not required.) 

Internship hours and times: 
Internship is available for either fall semester only or for the entire academic year for about 10 hours/week. Specific Hours/week to be discussed with intern as part of internship agreement as there is some flexibility of weekly hours to fit with student schedule.      

Intern will need own transportation to Sanctuary office and to occasional area meetings.  Intern must undergo a basic federal government security screening.

CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS JOB

  • Under the direction of the Monterey District Environmental Scientists, this position will participate in natural resource maintenance and conservation work within the Monterey District of the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Duties include, but are not limited to various tasks associated with exotic plant and animal control, native plant plant propagation and planting, installing resource fencing, and prescribed fire preparation. Reporting Location: Marina State Beach at 61 Reservation Road in Marina.
  • Salary and Schedule: The starting salary is $9.98 per hour. This is a seasonal position that can work up to 1500 hours per year. The work schedule is Monday through Friday or Monday through Thursday (40 or 32 hours per week). 
  • RequirementsApplicants should be in good physical condition and should be capable of  lifting 50 pounds, hiking, usually off -trail, in rugged terrain, work in extreme weather conditions, and using and carrying various tools. Applicants should be willing and capable of using such tools as herbicide backpack sprayers, chainsaws, and brush cutters. Applicants should posses a valid California driver's license and have a good driving record. A work uniform is required. An interest in natural resources is desirable.

 Job Opportunity in Watershed Management in Honduras Central America 

  

There is an open position in Watershed Management at Zamorano University, located in Hondorus central America.

  

Job Profile: 
The Department for Environment and Development requires hiring a professional with solid
technical and scientific training in watershed science and hydrology. The candidate must have
proven teaching experience in Watershed Management, research practice, scientific hydrology and watershed management. The selected professional should be able to develop, maintain and lead the process of teaching and learning, research and outreach on the subject of science of watershed management.

 

Requirements:

  •  University degree with Masters or Doctorate in Environmental Engineering with  specialization in Sciences, Watershed Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering or related  fields.
  •  Minimum 10 years proven experience combined between university teaching, research and  outreach in hydrology and watershed management.
  •  Experience in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).
  •  Mastery of the tools of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing.
  •  Knowledge of hydrology and climatology.
  •  Experience in land management from water resources.
  •  Experience in scientific and applied research topics of their specialty.
  •  Experience in community water systems and sanitation.
  •  Bilingual (English and Spanish), who has lived and worked in a multicultural environment.
  •  Commitment and exclusive full time with Zamorano.

Two botany "Research Associates" Needed

The Technicians will work together to inventory sensitive plant species and invasive plant species along and adjacent to open OHV routes in the Mojave Desert.

Compensation and Timeline
:   
o Rate of Pay: $15.00/hour
o Housing Stipend: $200/month
o 24-week appointment running September 08, 2014 through February 20, 2015; possibility of extension (though June) pending funding availability and positive performance review
o Full time, 40 hours per week; occasional holiday or weekend work may be required

Technical Qualifications
o Degree or coursework towards a degree in natural resources field, preferably botany;
o Previous field and/or classroom experience that demonstrates a strong background in plant identification and taxonomy;
o Experience adhering to established data collection and management protocols;  
o Experience surveying and mapping sensitive plants or invasive plants, desirable;
o Prior knowledge of or ability to quickly learn to identify native Mojave Desert plant species;
o Understanding of the importance of and ability to execute impeccable data maintenance (e.g. - update geodatabases, maintain daily record of activities, complete detailed end-of-season reports, etc.);
o Proven ability to use ArcGIS software to complete field and office tasks - experience designing and/or working with geodatabases, ideal;
o Ability to use Microsoft Office suite of programs;
o Experience using or ability to learn how to use a Trimble Juno to collect data; and
o Clean, state-issued driver's license with ability to safely operate a 4x4 vehicle on and off paved roads, and navigate in the backcountry using maps and GPS units.

Elkhorn Slough Estuary Explorers Club  


 

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to assist the Community Education Coordinator with presenting the Estuary Explorers Club afterschool program at the Elkhorn Slough Reserve.  The work would commence August 27, 2014 and run until May 27, 2015, every Wednesday 12:00 - 5:00pm, except school holidays.  There will be a stipend, tbd. Candidates should have a science background and ideally some experience working with children (Camps or other after school programs).  Familiarity with the local Monterey Coastal resources and watershed concepts is a plus. Bilingual is preferred and candidate must have their own transportation.

Activities to include: crafts, field walks, group activities all focused on local watershed

Location: Elkhorn Slough Reserve, 1700 Elkhorn Road, Watsonville, CA.

Stipend amount: yes, tbd

Times when intern needed: Every Wednesday, afterschool (except holidays between August 27 and May 27)
