*Zebrafish Facility Technician Position

A zebrafish aquaculture technician position is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. David Prober at the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, CA). Responsibilities include daily fish feeding, breeding and rearing, routine maintenance and repairs, administrative oversight and management of the 4000 tank zebrafish aquaculture facility, and being on-call for emergencies.

Requirements:

1. Bachelor's degree in marine biology, fisheries or related fields, OR minimum 2 years experience in a marine biology or fisheries laboratory

2. strong work ethic

3. excellent attention to detail

4. strong written and verbal communication skills

5. strong time management skills

6. ability to work as part of a team, including leadership skills/experience

Aquaculture and molecular biology experience are highly desired. Experience with plumbing and electrical systems is also desirable.  Salary is negotiable depending on qualifications.

  *Collaborative Research Project on the Human Dimensions of the Commercial Fishery for California Halibut Internship  

 The California Sea Grant Extension Program at the Institute of Marine Sciences, UCSC, is seeking a student intern to help review literature and construct a descriptive profile of the social, cultural and economic elements of the commercial fishery for California halibut as part of a collaborative fisheries research project. The purpose of the project is to integrate fishery participants', scientists' and managers' knowledge about the fishery to build shared understanding of how the fishery's human system works and the diverse factors that affect it. Project results will be used to inform community and fishery management decision-making. Depending on the intern's experience, skills and interests, the intern will assist the project team in either: 1) Review of literature related to a) the socioeconomics of the fishery and b) integrating fishery participants' and scientists' knowledge to describe the socioeconomics of the fishery and explain trends in fishery OR 2) Analysis and graphical representation of quantitative and qualitative fishery activity data related to the fishery and associated communities.

-10-15 hours per week (flexible)

- Class, capstone, or thesis credit possible
- Winter and spring quarters with possible extension through summer
Tasks
- Build overview of the fishery's socioeconomic dimensions based on existing literature and other data

Prerequisites
- Demonstrated competence in literature search and review, i.e., ability to identify and review literature and other sources of information, and write brief synopses
- Willingness to learn and work with qualitative data analysis software (NVivo)
- Social science coursework and/or research experience (preferred)

*ACE is currently hiring corps members for an AmeriCorps term in 2014

March 3, 2014 - September 9, 2014

 A 900 hour (minimum), 27 week commitment is required.  You are encouraged to consider volunteering with our non-AmeriCorps crews in CA or AZ if you wish to start earlier than March 2014.

Position Description:  AmeriCorps Members will spend 6 months training on complex trail construction, forestry, and environmental restoration projects under the guidance of ACE's most skilled staff members.   The goal of the position is to accomplish meaningful project work for a variety of agencies while becoming proficient in advanced field techniques such as trail construction, ecological restoration, dry stone masonry, and chainsaw use.   AmeriCorps Members will also gain leadership skills while helping to supervise, train, and generally support ACE volunteers who are rotated into long term projects. All work is physically demanding, occasionally requiring stints in the backcountry and/or extended stays in the field.  This position requires hiking, backpacking, camping and cooking outdoors while at front country and wilderness spike camps.                                     Location:  Members will be based in Santa Cruz and/or South Lake Tahoe, CA.  Projects will take place at various locations throughout California.  All participants must be flexible and willing to be assigned to a variety of locations and for multiple agencies, wherever community need is the highest.  Project assignments vary in length from one week to several months so Members will experience a range of opportunities throughout their six-month term.

*Coastal Physical Oceanographer Tenure Track Position

Full-time, academic year, tenure track in the Physics Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, beginning 9/15/14. *California Department of Pesticide Regulation Environmental Scientist Position

*MATE/UNOLS 2014 Internship

This winter/summer (early January - June 2014), the MATE Center and the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet will sponsor one marine technical internship onboard two research vessels: R/V Thompson and R/V Kilo Moana. Interns will work with marine technicians on shore and at sea, learning how to operate and maintain a variety of scientific and navigational equipment in support of shipboard scientific research. The internship will begin in Apia, Western Samoa, on the R/V Thompson.  The exact schedule through June will be determined before the acceptance date, but will involve work on the R/V Thompson and the R/V Kilo Moana.  Internship projects will be dependent on the funded science but previous interns have worked on projects ranging from chemical oceanography, marine biology, GIS/bathymetric surveys (seafloor mapping), geological studies, work with ROVs and much more! The position will last 6 months, and students will receive a stipend of $500 per week, reimbursement for travel expenses, and on station housing while ashore.

Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation Internship

The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation is excited to announce openings for two internship positions. We're seeking applicants with an interest in ocean education and outreach with an emphasis on generating greater awareness of and support for California's marine protected areas. Ideal candidates will be self-motivated and will work closely, but independently, with Sanctuary Foundation staff on one or more projects.Applications will be considered from currently enrolled graduate students as well as students who have recently graduated from an undergraduate or Masters program. The internship will run approximately 10-14 weeks from January through May 2014. Professor of Minerology

Assistant Professor of Water Resources

The University of Rhode Island seeks to strengthen and expand our focus area "Water and Water Resources". The successful candidate will actively participate in a collaborative, interdisciplinary research program in hydrology, water quality, environmental geochemistry, environmental engineering, natural resource policy, and Geographic Information Systems and be involved in teaching interdisciplinary courses. Professor of Geology at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology

The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track position in petrology at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor level. We seek candidates with expertise and interests in one or more of the following areas: mineral resources, geothermal systems, magmatic systems, or volcanology. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in petrology and other areas related to his/her expertise. Graduate Level Research Opportunity

Kris Jaeger is  seeking a MS-level graduate student to conduct field and GIS-based research on the hydrology and geomorphology of mountain headwater streams at Ohio State University. The position will begin August 2014 (Fall Semester) with the potential for field work to begin Summer 2014 depending on availability of selected student. Support will be a combination of teaching and research assistantships (approximately $20K per year plus tuition, fees and health benefits). Science Policy Summer Internship in Washington, D.C.

      This is an early alert regarding a Science Policy-focused Summer Internship Program (SSIP) conducted by the Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) Network with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF).  This opportunity is for graduate and undergraduate students from groups underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), particularly, but not limited to, students interested in pursuing careers in science policy or science education.
      The ten-week, Washington, DC-based internship (May 27-August 1, 2014) is made possible through a grant to the QEM  Network from NSF. Students who successfully complete the internship will receive a taxable stipend, $3,000 for undergraduates and $4,000 for graduate students, paid in three installments over the course of the summer. The students also will receive housing at George Washington University with other QEM interns as well as round-trip airfare and ground travel reimbursement. More Information

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is currently advertising two student programs for students in oceanic, environmental, biological and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing, physical and social sciences including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education. Many of the disciplines NOAA employees study overlap with USDA.

Nov. 24th: Winter Wellness at 10:30am-11:30am, Toxic Free Cleaning at 12:00pm-1:00pm 

Shannon Belfaust, a long time vendor at Everyone's Harvest Farmers' Markets, will be instructing two educational classes on Winter Wellness and Essential Oils.  The class will demonstrate how we can protect ourselves during the cold and flu season, how to prevent them, and also what steps to take in the event you catch either of the two.  At this class you will learn how essential oils can play an important role in the prevention of viruses and bacteria! Additionally, Shannon will demonstrate how to eliminate toxic cleaning chemicals from your household, by creating green cleaning products, formulated with essential oils!

 
*CSUMB Farm Stand Survey

We are conducting a survey for the CSUMB Farm Stand which currently happens every Tuesday, 12-3 p.m., outside the library. Please assist us by completing this survey.

 

Everyone's Harvest Farm Stand at CSUMB

Every Tuesday, starting September 17th, the Everyone's Harvest Farm Stand will be outside the CSUMB Library Cafe from 12pm-3pm. Our Farm Stand offers fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and flowers purchased on the day of or the night before an Everyone's Harvest Certified Farmers' Market. All items sold support the many local small-scale farmers at our Certified Farmers' Markets, some of which serve low-income or working class communities. Everyone's Harvest happily accepts cash, EBT, meal plan blocks and flex (to use your meal plan, go to the library caf�, the Otter Express, or the Dining Commons and ask for farm stand vouchers).
