Associated Students Technology Committee

Brooke Goodwin, the Chief Technology Officer for CSUMB is currently looking for two students to be on her committee. No requirements necessary, just students looking to get involved! They meet every other week from 3-4pm on Thursdays to discuss the technologic advancements on campus. After this semester, a member from the committee may be hired in a paid position. Greenovation Fund
The California State Student Association (CSSA) gives out yearly awards to CSU college Associated Students organizations for student-run sustainability projects. Students with ideas for projects are encouraged to suggest them to our AS Environmental Committee. More information about the Greenovation Fund can be found here.

Job, Internship & Research Opportunities
*Graduate Level Research Opportunity

Kris Jaeger is  seeking a MS-level graduate student to conduct field and GIS-based research on the hydrology and geomorphology of mountain headwater streams at Ohio State University. The position will begin August 2014 (Fall Semester) with the potential for field work to begin Summer 2014 depending on availability of selected student. Support will be a combination of teaching and research assistantships (approximately $20K per year plus tuition, fees and health benefits). Fellowship  support may be possible for outstanding applicants. Interested applicants should send to Dr. Kristin Jaeger ([email protected] ) a written statement of graduate research interests, a copy of their CV, GPA and GRE scores, unofficial transcript or list of coursework, and contact information for three references by December 2013. Submission of the formal application by 7 January 2014 is required to ensure full consideration for available fellowships.

 

*Science Policy Summer Internship in Washington, D.C.
A science policy-focused Summer Internship Program (SSIP) conducted by the Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) Network with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) is being offered.  This opportunity is for graduate and undergraduate students from groups underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), particularly, but not limited to, students interested in pursuing careers in science policy or science education. 

The ten-week, Washington, DC-based internship (May 27-August 1, 2014) is made possible through a grant to the QEM  Network from NSF. Students who successfully complete the internship will receive a taxable stipend, $3,000 for undergraduates and $4,000 for graduate students, paid in three installments over the course of the summer. The students also will receive housing at George Washington University with other QEM interns as well as round-trip airfare and ground travel reimbursement. 
 
*Monarch Butterfly Monitoring with the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History
This fall and winter the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History is looking for help with monitoring the overwintering Monarch Butterfly populations in Monterey County. We have setup this opportunity for undergraduate students through UROC so students will be involved in population counts, but will also be involved in research with our Science Advisor, Moria Robinson from UC Davis. *Internship opportunities at the Gold Gate National Parks Conservancy

The Park Stewardship Program is seeking a motivated intern to work in a dynamic community-based habitat restoration program in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in the San Francisco Bay Area. With over 15 million visitors annually and over 80,000 acres of land, it is the largest urban national park in the country. Our work is highly variable and covers a broad spectrum of topics, including inventorying existing biological and physical resources, identifying and managing threats to sensitive resources, and engaging the surrounding community in "stewarding" important park sites. Work sites are in a variety of coastal habitats from oak-bay woodlands to coastal freshwater marshes both north and south of the Golden Gate Bridge. Medical Scribe Positions at Natividad Medical Center
CEP America's Scribes work exclusively in our Emergency Departments (ED). Scribes document patients' medical histories and physical exams as they work with CEP America healthcare providers in the ED. Our scribes are trained in medical terminology and medical documentation. Scribes also receive customized training using the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or documentation system specific to their hospital. Scribes do not perform any clinical duties nor do they provide direct patient care, but they assist with a number of important tasks.
 

Collaborative Research Project Internship Available

 
An internship with the Collaborative Research Project on the Commercial Fishery for California Halibut is available. The California Sea Grant Extension Program at the Institute of Marine Sciences, UCSC, is looking for a student intern (or interns) to help review literature and construct a profile of the commercial fishery for California halibut as part of a collaborative fisheries research project. The purpose of the project is to integrate fishery participants', scientists' and managers' knowledge about the fishery to build shared understanding of how the fishery works and the diverse factors that affect it. Project results will be used to inform community and fishery management decision-making. More Information
 

CA Department of Fish and Wildlife Natural Resource Volunteer Program 

The Natural Resource Volunteer Program (NRVP) assists the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) by providing enhanced public service to the community while offering opportunities for for citizens to make a definitive contribution toward protecting California's wildlife resources.

  

Chemistry and Biology Grader Position - CSUMB

Grader for Biology and/or chemistry 100 and 200-level courses.  Pay $8.50 to $10.  Must have completed CHEM 111 to be eligible for CHEM grader. Must have completed BIO 241 and BIO 242 to be eligible for a BIO grader position.

City of San Jose Environmental Services Internship
The Watershed Protection Division is seeking a student intern to help us protect and improve the quality of San Jose's Watersheds. A highly motivated student will learn principles and gain experience in stormwater management and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit compliance. Interns support full time staff in promoting sustainable landscaping practices, water quality monitoring, stormwater inspection programs, tracking municipal operations, and public outreach. An internship with the Watershed Protection Division will provide a rich opportunity to learn a variety of environmental management skills, as well as provide exposure to citywide operations and procedures. 

  

Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Internships
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) is one of the nation's largest marine protected areas and encompasses more than 6,000 square miles of central California coastal waters containing a rich array of habitats and marine life. The Sanctuary program provides protection of these natural resources through research and education to foster public understanding and stewardship of this nationally significant marine area. 
 
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary constantly seeking interns to work on various research, education and resource protection projects. 

FishWise Sustainable Seafood Internship
FishWise is a non-profit organization designed to improve the sustainability and financial performance of seafood retailers, distributors, and producers.  Uniquely positioned between the seafood industry and marine conservation organizations, FishWise offers a range of services that create trust between seafood vendors and their customers.  FishWise joins business imperatives with leading ocean conservation strategies. The intern's primary responsibility is two-fold: 1) to provide support to existing member retailer partners and 2) provide general office support.

Scholarships and Conferences
*Expanding Your Horizons Conference Needs Presenters 

Expanding Your Horizons is a one day conference for 5th-10th grade girls who are interested in STEM careers.  The conference will be held on November 23rd at Hartnell College in Salinas.  We are currently looking for female scientists (and students!)  who would like to present a hands on workshop during the conference.  Please see here for more details.

 

*UROC and McNair Scholars Applications

The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Center (UROC) is recruiting for the McNair Scholars adn the UROC Scholars programs. Scholars will set high standards of achievement, conduct undergraduate research, present at national conferences, and successfully apply for fellowships and graduate school. To achieve this, Scholars are required to enroll in UROC's four semester Research Seminar Series.

Students from all majors are encouraged to apply to the Scholars program; however, we cannot accommodate professional programs such as medical school, veterinary school, and law school. Ideal candidates will have two summers remaining before graduation.

There is an information session on Wed Oct. 9 at 3pm in at UROC (2nd floor of the library).

The application deadline is November 1 by 5pm.

Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting

The Society of Toxicology (SOT) would like to invite you to encourage students to consider a career in toxicology. SOT offers students and their advisors the opportunity to learn more about toxicology by attending a special program for undergraduate students at the SOT Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ, March 22-24. We provide travel funds and host a special Undergraduate Education Program designed to guide talented undergrads along the path to graduate school and a research careers in toxicology. COAST Student Research Awards 

COAST is currently accepting applications from CSU students for Undergraduate and Graduate Student Research Awards. Undergraduate student awards of $1500 and graduate student awards of $3000 will be made to CSU students working with CSU COAST faculty members on marine and coastal-related research projects.

Humanities Education and Research Association Annual Conference

February 27- March 1, 2014, Washington D.C.

 

In keeping with HERA's mission of promoting the study of the humanities across a wide range of disciplines and interdisciplines, we invite presentations for the 2014 conference.A wide range of disciplines and areas of study for the conference are included.

Creative presentations, readings, and exhibitions are also welcomed. Submissions are encouraged from educators at all levels (including advanced graduate students) as well as all those with an interest in the arts and humanities.

 

Proposals for papers, panels, or workshops must be submitted through the conference web portal on the HERA website at www.h-e-r-a.org.Presentation time for individual papers is limited to 15-20 minutes.

Student Opportunities at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is currently advertizing two student programs for students in oceanic, environmental, biological and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing, physical and social sciences including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education.  Many of the disciplines NOAA employees study overlap with USDA.

The Hollings Scholarship brings approximately 100 students to DC every summer for a scholarship/internship program.  NOAA is looking to diversify their candidate pool as a very small percentage of students awarded are minorities.

Winter Intensive Field Studies in Belize
 The Institute of Sustainable International Studies, ISIS, is offering courses this winter that will allow students to do both. Students have the chance to explore inland jungles and rivers, elaborate cave systems, grasses and mangroves surrounding the Belize Barrier Reef and discover traditional methods of environmental conservation. Humpback Whale Field Intensive Program  in Puerto Rico 

The Marine and Coastal Ecology Research Center is inviting interested students to participate in the third season for 7 day field intensive focused on cetacean behavioral ecology in Puerto Rico. 

Join our research team studying humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) wintering off Puerto Rico. Space is limited to 4 students in each  7 day session for boat and land based research platforms during the field season January 19, 2014- April 19, 2014. We are offering this "shorty" format (by request!) to fill the need for less expensive programs fitting into work and class schedules. Gap year students are welcome to inquire about programs lasting multiple weeks, including in depth analysis of data. More Information

The Bren School offers a two-year professional Master of Environmental Science & Management (MESM) program and the PhD in Environmental Science & Management. The master's program, a central focus of the school's educational mission, trains students to work in environmental careers in government agencies, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and consulting firms. We cordially invite prospective students to join us for our annual Open House, to be held at the UCSB campus in Bren Hall on Friday, November 1, 2013 from 8:30am-6:00pm.
