Special Event: 

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) is extending the deadline for its solicitation for brief research ideas from the general public as part of its 2014-2015 research planning process.  Research ideas submitted by the previous deadline (January 31, 2013) do not need to be re-submitted; all submissions will be evaluated after the new May 31, 2013 deadline. 

 

Research ideas are limited to 200 words and should very clearly articulate why the idea is relevant to ARB's policies and/or programs.  It should include clearly stated research objective(s), a very brief description of methods that could or would be employed, and what the final product or deliverable of the research would be.  Information on time and funding needed to conduct the research is helpful but not required.  You may wish to review ARB's programs or previous research plans.  Only ideas that clearly demonstrate policy relevance to ARB will be considered.

The U.S. Geological Survey California Water Science Center is seeking to fill one student internship position in our Santa Cruz Field Office. The applicant will be trained for a possible career with the USGS as a Hydrologic Technician. The Federal Government is an equal opportunity employer.

DUTIES:  The Student will be involved in streamgaging projects concerned with:

  1. Gathering basic hydrologic data in a combination of the following areas:         Water quantity, water quality and sediment transport,
  2.  Using computers to develop hydrologic data,
  3. Using electronic data collection instruments,
  4. Maintaining shop and warehouse,
  5. Construction and maintenance of stream flow gaging stations.

TITLE and STARTING PAY:  Student Trainee (*GS-1399) Hydrologic Technician, $12.96 to $15.88 per hour based on experience and education.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:  Part-time work (16-24 hours per week) during the school year and full time during school vacations and summer.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  A high school diploma or GED certificate is required. A valid California Drivers License and proof of insurance are required. A strong interest in, and knowledge of earth sciences or hydrology is highly desirable. Applicant must be attending college at least part time taking science oriented courses in the Physical or Biological sciences, or Mathematics.

 

  • To qualify at the GS 2 level ($12.96/hour) the applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • To qualify at the GS 3 level ($14.14//hour) the applicant must have completed 30 semester units, of which one course must be from one of the course disciplines listed above.
  • To qualify at the GS 4 level ($15.88/hour) the applicant must have completed 60 semester units, of which 12 units must be from one of the course disciplines listed above.

 

OTHER FACTORS: Must be willing to work outside, often in rough terrain and in adverse weather conditions.  Be able to travel when necessary, normally within California for as many as four consecutive nights.  Must be capable of lifting and moving objects weighing as much as 100 pounds.

 
**CSUMB students who took the internship were offered  full time careers with the USGS  following the internship.  In the past they have picked up someone with great GPA and promise...in their sophmore or senior undergrad year.  Our alumni are running all the central coast gages now!   

 

*OCEANS internships in South Africa

Oceans Campus in South Africa launched six years ago as a science based research institute researching great white sharks and cetaceans in Africa.  Their horizons have expanded over the years to incorporate significant terrestrial research and conservation work with our partner universities and wildlife reserves.  They are delighted to offer the following month long internship and volunteer programs.

 

We currently offer the following programs and prospective interns can "mix 'n match" courses and stay for more than one program if they so wish:

 

  1. Environmental Journalism and Travel Writing Internship : Offers interns real world experience.  Tutoring is carried out by  environmental journalists, photographers, writers and public relations professionals.
  2. Wildlife Film Making Internship : Offers practical introduction into the world of wildlife filmmaking, the work of camera operators, directors, producers, scriptwriters and the talent required to produce and broadcast a successful wildlife documentary.  Our interns all leave with a professional 5 minute "sizzle" or mini-documentary to show prospective employers or to pitch at film festivals.
  3. Wildlife and Adventure Photography Internship : Interns learn how to capture the iconic wildlife of Africa on camera and also how to interact with wild animals.  We help interns to develop skills in adventure photography and also how to photograph the people of Africa- thereby giving them a practical "slice-of-life" as a photographer and perhaps assisting them to make career decisions.  Our interns all leave with a portfolio of Africa.
  4. Underwater Photography Internship : Takes place in Mozambique.  This program focuses on the underwater wildlife and coral reefs.  A SCUBA certification is not a prerequisite as we are PADI instructors and able to train the candidate to a level, enabling them to partake in this program.  We love interns who have a passion for the ocean.  We also teach them how to become active in conservation issues if they are interested.
  5. Umkhondo Big-5 Program : The Umkhondo Big-5 Wildlife Conservation Program offers volunteers an absolutely incomparable experience working hands-on with the "Big-Five" of Africa - Lion, African Elephant, Cape buffalo, Leopard and Rhinoceros.  Volunteers also work with other African wildlife, all within a malaria-free private game reserve.  Volunteers become crucial team members with the dedicated rangers and conservation units running the renowned Garden Route Game Lodge in the heart of the gorgeous Garden Route in South Africa.
  6. Oceans Research Internship : The renowned Oceans Research Internship offers a 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunity for students to gain hands on practical training in conducting research on South Africa's marine mega-fauna, including the great white shark.  Interns will join our scientists daily on their research expeditions to conduct ground-breaking research and experiments on the sharks and marine mammals of Mossel Bay.  Interns also take part in oceanographic expeditions, aquarium husbandry, research and much more.
  7. Marine Education Internship : Interns will join an immensely rewarding environmental education program operating throughout the Garden Route of South Africa.  This program gives interns an unprecedented opportunity to educate the youth of Africa on marine conservation by travelling to rural schools and presenting our marine education syllabus.  In addition, interns will host visiting schools to our shark aquarium and research facility, guiding learners though an incredible marine educational experience.
  8. Shark Warriors Program : Volunteers join a leading sustainable ecotourism and conservation-orientated company in South Africa.  White Shark Africa offers both an educational and exciting adventure in Mossel Bay, through cage diving with great white sharks.  Volunteers lead the company's education, conservation and research initiatives, whist experiencing the daily adventures and challenges of interacting with the charismatic great white sharks that live in our bay.

*CFRI "Meet the Cistic Fibrosis Experts!" Conference

Sunday, August 4, 2013, is the CFRI's 26th National Cystic Fibrosis Family Education Conference, which will be held at Sofitel Hotel in Redwood City, CA. Medical professionals from across the country will present information on various topics relating to cystic fibrosis.

 

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common genetic disease in the U.S. Currently, there is no cure for CF.  Individuals affected by CF require multiple medications and treatments, including respiratory therapy, proper nutritional care and extensive support from their healthcare team.

As future medical professionals that will become an essential part of a healthcare team, your students will greatly benefit from attending the conference on Sunday:

  • Students will have the opportunity to meet experts in the field of cystic fibrosis.
  • Students will have the opportunity to listen to all CF presentations during the day.
  • Student will meet patients and family members to gain a better understanding of the CF community and their experiences.

* Horticulture Internship with Watershed Institute and Burelson Consulting

 

The Watershed Institute & Burleson Consulting are seeking to hire two horticultural interns for a restoration project on the former Fort Ord Army Base near Monterey, California.  Upon hire, the successful candidates could begin work as early as mid-May 2013 and could work as many as 500 hours on the project (This internship could be applied to the CWSP PSM internship requirement with advisor approval).

*Environmental Communications and Environmental Reasearch 

In collaboration with Dr. Sherri Mason of SUNY Fredonia, Pangaea Explorations is pleased to present a 7 day Environmental Research and Communications course, held aboard our 72' foot Challenger sailing yacht, Sea Dragon. This course will take place between Montreal, Quebec and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Sea Dragon will voyage down the legendary St. Lawrence Seaway, around the 1000 Islands chain, and across beautiful Lake Ontario. The course will examine critical freshwater ecosystem issues, while collecting plastic for future studies.  Participants will get the opportunity to take part in data collection, sampling and research reporting, while also learning sailing skills and techniques.

The 8 day program will also focus on way to present current environmental issues to the   world through social media, activism and community participation. Our aim is to inspire young scientists and communicators to tell the Stories of the Great Lakes, and be a part of our outreach campaign, known as The One Water Story.

 

 

The cost of the course is $800.00 per student and includes room and provisions on board the Sea Dragon, as well as instruction and course materials.The course runs from July 13-20, 2013.

The Sustainability Intern will focus on facilities and dining operations, which include:

 

General 
o Support the on-site Environmental Steward in the implementation of the site-level Environmental Management System (EMS) and associated action plans o Support the on-site Environmental Steward in the execution of the following EMS start-up activities: 1) Green Team selection and training, 2) development of the site-level EMS communications (EMS boards in each department, talking points for first-line managers, etc.) and 3) On-the-job training and communication of sustainability policies to employees when necessary o Support the execution of EMS action plans throughout the season. *SamTrans Operations Planning Summer Internship
SamTrans (San Mateo Transit District) is looking for summer interns in Engineering, Planning & Research, Information Technology and in my department of Operations Planning. This person will be involved in the following projects:

 

* Tasks related to implementation of the SamTrans Service Plan (SSP), including :

o Preparing materials for public meetings.

o Developing draft bus stop lists.

o Updating Hastus data with the new routes.

* National Transit Database passenger counting ridechecks.  This involves counting passenger boardings and alightings by stop while riding buses.  Training on best methods and an explanation on how this information is used by the district will be provided.

* Ridership analysis to identify poor-performing trips or route segments. Includes school-bell trip analysis - review school-bell trip ridership to identify under-performing service. Recommend adjustments to improve service and resource utilization.

* On-time performance analysis.

* Prepare route left-rights (bus operator route instructions).

* Assisting with analysis of how SamTrans service decisions impact minority and low-income populations per Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

 

Other projects will be based on the skills of the intern.  These include:

* Using GIS, update route and stop information

* Create ridership and on-time performance reports from various electronic data sources. Ability and skill with Crystal Reports and other database software systems would be required or easily learned.

* Prepare bus operator detailed route maps for new and existing routes. Ability and skill using Adobe Illustrator would be required or easily learned.

* Using Crystal Reports, analyze data and prepare presentations with information from the following systems:  Automatic Passenger Counting (APC), Automatic Vehicle Locator System  (AVL or ACS), Hastus scheduling software, and the GFI fare box software.

* Ability and skill using Microsoft Excel, specifically Pivot Tables, is highly desired.

* Ability and skill using Crystal Reports and/or experience mining databases for specific information is highly desired.

Job Description: 

The Intern's primary responsibility is two-fold: 1) to provide support to existing member retailer partners and 2) provide general office support. The intern will work with existing Project Managers (PMs) who are the main customer service contact for retail partners with questions or needs after the launch of the FW program. The intern will help them support these partnerships through materials development and shipment, newsletters and website updates. The Intern will conduct work to support major buyer partnerships with database work and species research. Qualifications:

*Ventana Wildlife Society- Seasonal Camp Instructor - Summer 2013
 

 Position Overview: Ventana Wildlife Society (VWS) is a non-profit located in Monterey County, California. Our mission is to conserve native wildlife and their habitats, through research, restoration and education. We are currently seeking seasonal instructors to help us provide meaningful outdoor experiences for youth this summer. Our Natural Science Discovery Camps for 8-12 year olds offer eight weeks of day camp with one overnight campout per week, serving 12 - 25 youth per week. We also offer various Single Day Adventures (all ages), three-day, two-night Condor Wilderness Camps for 13 - 18 year olds, and half day programs for ages 4-7. All education programs take place between Monday and Friday with some overnights required.

 

Please note: Training is mandatory and will occur Tues. May 28 - Fri. May 31 and Mon. June 3 - Fri. June 7.

Assignment Duration: May 28th - August 23th (Positions open until filled)

Compensation: Full-time seasonal position, no benefits. $4,800 - 5,200 stipend (doe). Housing not included.

Job Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Safely drive youth in a 15-passenger van each day to various locations in Monterey County. Keep vehicles clean and
  • safe, transport vehicles to/from gas station and/or repair shop as needed.
  •  Co-lead and lead educational activities for up to 25 youth in various outdoor settings. Adapt to and co-lead a flexible schedule of activities and lessons.
  • Strive to make sure campers are enjoying their time at camp and gaining meaningful experiences. Ensure the safety,
  • well-being and comfort of children.
  • Participate in conflict resolution and discipline through positive behavioral management.
  • Preparation of daily snacks, art projects, over night camp out and meals, etc.
  • Support vendor staff at various locations in working with camp participants (kayak shop, whale watch, etc.).
  • Clean, organize and transport camp equipment, participate in camp set up and breakdown, and transportation logistics.
  • Be familiar with VWS Emergency Action Plan and able to administer First Aid / CPR effectively.
  • Admin. duties include submitting payroll and incident reports as needed and assisting with evaluation of program.
  • Be available to staff the Discovery Center 3-4 weekends over the summer. Schedule TBD and somewhat flexible.

Qualifications:

  • Must be available for the assignment duration and all program hours.
  • Must have reliable transportation to/from our Salinas office and program locations.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working with children in an educational outdoor setting.
  • Have an understanding of local natural history and ecology and be familiar with current environmental topics.
  • Knowledge in one or more natural science topics (biology, botany, astronomy, geology, marine biology, etc.)
  • Certified in First Aid/CPR by start of employment required. Assistance provided.
  • California Class B license by start of employment required. Assistance provided.
  • Able to hike (3 miles), kayak (3 hrs), spend 4 hrs on an ocean vessel and work under a variety of weather conditions.
  • Able to work well as part of a cohesive teaching team - interact in a positive manner with coworkers, participants,
  • parents, vendors, and the general public .
  • Ability to lift up to 40lbs safely.

Working Conditions: Our programs are decentralized - we do not own a camping facility. All programming takes place outdoors. Participants are picked up in our passenger van and transported to various locations in Monterey County. Each week the youth camp spends one night camping out, utilizing tents and cooking outdoors. Condor Wilderness Camps are intense three day camping experiences that include aspects of field biology in a remote wilderness setting.

Research Opportunity at Hopkins Marine Station

Francesco Ferretti, a post doctoral researcher at Hopkins Marine Station, is working on a project about baselines of abundance and composition of shark communities (www.sharkbaselines.org). They are looking for students interested in working on the project. Specifically, a student in the biology, computer science or statistics department (preferable) able (or willing to learn how) to deal with large sets of data and work with R, postgreSQL, any of Perl/Phyton/Javascript/PhP, and Unix to collaborate on a global meta-analysis of shark catch data. Ideal candidates are students able (or willing to learn how) to develop dynamic web pages, and that are (or will become) familiar with Wordpress web sites. Preference will be given to a students familiar with probabilistic modeling frameworks. They would help in the development and refining of the Shark CPUE database, and collaborate with us in analyzing the catch data. They should be able to deal with scattered data stored in different files and organize the data in the relational database, and develop webpages interacting with the database.

SCA Sustainability Internships in Pacific Grove

ARAMARK Sustainability Intern-Asilomar Conference Grounds, Pacific Grove, CA

 5/23/2013 - 11/23/2013      Duration: 27 weeks

 

The Environmental Intern will serve as a key resource in supporting and advancing ARAMARK's commitment to Environmental Stewardship at Asilomar Conference Grounds based operations. The intern will work with staff and the Green Team at Asilomar to further the development of its EMS for 2012, primarily focused on development and implementation of Asilomar Integrated Action Plan towards meeting their 2012 environmental goals and objectives with an emphasis on sustainable food and beverage and sustainable green meetings initiatives. Specific Responsibilities to Include: Assist location Environmental Steward with EMS development. Participate on Green team; fulfill tasks assigned by the Steward and Green team related to EMS development. Take a lead role in implementing Asilomar's 2012 Integrated Action Plan (Sustainability Plan) with an emphasis on developing Asilomar's sustainable food and beverage and green meetings initiatives. This position is full-time (40 hrs/week). This position is not eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award.

 

Situated on 104 acres, Asilomar Conference Grounds consists of lodging and conference facilities positioned on the Monterey Peninsula at Pacific Grove, CA, between Pebble Beach golf course and the town of Monterey.

CA Department of Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aide

The CA Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting for positions as a scientific aide. Since 1962, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Ocean Salmon Project (OSP) has collected dockside catch and effort data from California sport and commercial ocean salmon fisheries. Although the final season won't be established by the Pacific Fishery Management Council and the Fish and Game Commission until early April, we anticipate needing field samplers in the following locations: 
Avila, Morro Bay, Monterey, Moss Landing, Santa Cruz, Princeton/Half Moon Bay, San Francisco, Emeryville, Berkeley, Sausalito, Bodega Bay, Fort Bragg, Shelter Cove, Fields Landing, Eureka, Trinidad,

and Crescent City.

 Aides are needed to: 

* Collects recreational fishery data and biological samples at public launch ramps, docks, piers,jetties and beach/banks or ocean fishery data at commercial offloading or processing locations using standardized survey protocols. Duties include identification of finfish and invertebrates to species and collecting fish lengths, weights, and other biological data as needed. Sampling occurs weekdays, weekends and holidays. May also conduct onboard sampling of Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessels.

* Collects, transports, or processes biological samples such as scales, otoliths, tissue samples,blood, gonads, and stomach contents as needed.

* Performs data entry, reviews, edits and submits data to field supervisor in a timely manner.

* Interacts with and responds to public questions about recreational fishing regulations, fish identification, and other topics while in the field using material provided by the Department.

* Assists with other project functions as needed, including database management, data analyses, technical report writing and equipment maintenance.

* May assist other projects as needed, including fishery-independent research, equipment and vehicle maintenance.

American Conservation Experience Internships through AmeriCorps

 

AmeriCorps Professional Development Members will spend just over 3 months training on complex trail construction, forestry, and environmental restoration projects under the guidance of ACE's most highly skilled staff members.   The goal of the position is to accomplish meaningful project work for a variety of agencies while becoming proficient in advanced field techniques such as trail construction, ecological restoration, dry stone masonry, and chainsaw use.   The internships will be based in either Santa Cruz, CA or Tahoe, CA. CIEE Research Station Bonaire Scientific Diving Opportunity
  
Students can spend their summer studying coral reef ecosystems through theoretical exploration and field experiences that use the renowned Bonaire National Marine Park as a living classroom.

Our summer program is a two-session study abroad program which introduces students to scientific diving methods before allowing them to use those skills to explore an amazing diversity of marine life and ecological processes on coral reefs, as well as the conservation of tropical marine ecosystems.

Students will:

  • Master scuba skills and use these skills, and tools such as photography and videography equipment, to document and understand the ecology of coral reefs and associated ecosystems
  • Focus on theoretical concepts in coral reef ecology and conservation through interactive lectures and field trips to coral reef ecosystems, and learn to identify reef fish, corals, and other organisms and their behavioral interactions.

The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is hiring!  The biology program is looking for 10-15 Biological Science Technicians for the summer of 2013 to assist with our long-term seabird monitoring
program. Technicians will be collecting data on breeding chronology, reproductive success, population changes, adult survival, and food habits of 15 species of seabirds (including storm-petrels, cormorants, kittiwakes, murres, pigeon guillemots, auklets, and puffins).  The application for the 2013 - 2014 $4,000 MASNA Student Scholarships is now available. This year there are two scholarships available; one $4,000 scholarship for a college undergraduate student and one $4,000 scholarship for a college graduate student. The two $4,000 2013 - 2014 MASNA Student Scholarships are made possible by our generous sponsors Doctors Foster and Smith LiveAquaria.com, Ecotech Marine, and Seachem.


To be eligible for a $4,000 MASNA Student Scholarship, an applicant must be a current/entering undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university. The student must have declared a major/focus or have intent to declare a major/focus in one of the marine science disciplines.

Selection will be based upon the student's academic history and the student's contributions and demonstrated commitment to the marine aquarium hobby.

North American students, no matter where they are studying in the world, as well as students from abroad, who are studying in North America, are eligible, as long as they attend/plan to attend an accredited college or university.

The Environment and The Eastern Cape Frontier(6 USA credits)

Students will gain firsthand experience of the unique environmental issues that define the Eastern Cape in South Africa. This area is recognized as a frontier, in many respects providing an ideal location to learn how our development opportunities are shaped by our environment.The special features of the Eastern Cape range from the globally unique concatenation of three global biodiversity hotspots, a treasure trove of ancient fossils, the oldest anatomically-modern humans, some of the earliest cultural artifacts, a history of rapacious over exploitation of natural resources and local extinctions, followed by conservation success stories and now an emerging biodiversity based economy that is built on ecotourism.

This is an opportunity to gain knowledge in a landscape that is once again being shaped by the "big five" such as elephant and rhino and where new solutions to ancient problems are being developed.The course is largely field-trip based with visits to ancient caves, overnight stays and visits to modern National Parks.

 Community Service Learning (6 USA credits)

The aim of the program is to provide students from abroad with the opportunity to demonstrate and develop their global citizenship through volunteer work. They will develop an understanding of the current issues impacting community life in South Africa and experience this first-hand through service in a South African community, while earning academic credit.This module orientates students to the fundamentals of community development in the field of Health Sciences, in terms of its goals, principles, process, and application in South Africa. The program is comprised of a theory and practical component. Ongoing informal mentoring is made available to students.

The Bard MBA in Sustainability
focuses on the business case for sustainability. We train students to see how firms can integrate economic, environmental, and social objectives, the triple bottom line, to create successful businesses that build a more sustainable world. Graduates of the Bard MBA Program will transform existing companies, start their own businesses, and pioneer new ways of operating that meet human needs, while protecting and restoring the earth's natural systems. The Bard MBA is a low-residency program structured around "weekend intensives" with regular online instruction between these residencies. Five of these intensives are held each term: four in the heart of New York City and one in the Hudson Valley.
