*American Conservation Experience Internships through AmeriCorps

 

AmeriCorps Professional Development Members will spend just over 3 months training on complex trail construction, forestry, and environmental restoration projects under the guidance of ACE's most highly skilled staff members.   The goal of the position is to accomplish meaningful project work for a variety of agencies while becoming proficient in advanced field techniques such as trail construction, ecological restoration, dry stone masonry, and chainsaw use.   The internships will be based in either Santa Cruz, CA or Tahoe, CA.  *CA Department of Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aide

The CA Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting for positions as a scientific aide. 

Since 1962, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Ocean Salmon Project (OSP) has collected dockside catch and effort data from California sport and commercial ocean salmon fisheries. Although the final season won't be established by the Pacific Fishery Management Council and the Fish and Game Commission until early April, we anticipate needing field samplers in the following locations: 

Avila, Morro Bay, Monterey, Moss Landing, Santa Cruz, Princeton/Half Moon Bay, San Francisco, Emeryville, Berkeley, Sausalito, Bodega Bay, Fort Bragg, Shelter Cove, Fields Landing, Eureka, Trinidad, and Crescent City.

 Aides are needed to: 

* Collects recreational fishery data and biological samples at public launch ramps, docks, piers,jetties and beach/banks or ocean fishery data at commercial offloading or processing locations using standardized survey protocols. Duties include identification of finfish and invertebrates to species and collecting fish lengths, weights, and other biological data as needed. Sampling occurs weekdays, weekends and holidays. May also conduct onboard sampling of Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessels.

* Collects, transports, or processes biological samples such as scales, otoliths, tissue samples,blood, gonads, and stomach contents as needed.

* Performs data entry, reviews, edits and submits data to field supervisor in a timely manner.

* Interacts with and responds to public questions about recreational fishing regulations, fish identification, and other topics while in the field using material provided by the Department.

* Assists with other project functions as needed, including database management, data analyses, technical report writing and equipment maintenance.

* May assist other projects as needed, including fishery-independent research, equipment and vehicle maintenance.

*2013  MATE Internships At-Sea Internships

 

This summer approximately fifteen internships will be funded by the MATE Center for marine technical internships aboard sea-going research vessels that are part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) and the United States Coast Guard and the Institute For Exploration. Interns will work with marine technicians on shore and at sea, learning how to operate and maintain a variety of scientific and navigational equipment and support a scientific cruise. These internship opportunities are diverse and will be located throughout the country and around the world. Interns work directly with the tools and equipment used to accomplish oceanographic research.   Positions last up to 16 weeks, and MATE provides all travel expenses and a stipend of $500/week.

 

 

MATE internships focus on technology and scientific support of marine research rather than the academic research.

 

The MATE Center encourages a diverse pool of applicants and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, or age. Dates are flexible and internships will lasttwo to sixteen weeks starting in May and continuing through the fall (depending on internship placement). Please state your availability on your application and students selected to participate in MATE's internship program will be placed into internships that fit their availability.

 

APPLICANTS MUST BE:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • A current undergraduate student or very recently graduated from an undergraduate program and a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or its possessions; international students are not eligible for this program. An undergraduate student is defined as a student who is enrolled in a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree. Students who are transferring from one college or university to another and are enrolled at neither institution during the intervening summer may participate under certain circumstances.  Graduate students or those enrolling in graduate school are NOT eligible to apply.
  • Interested in becoming marine technicians on research vessels.
  • Able to enroll in a for-credit cooperative work experience course (either at Monterey Peninsula College or their home institution). If the costs for this are a burden to participation, the MATE Center can pay for this up-front and deduct the cost from the internship stipend.

 

Students in two-year and certificate technology and science programs and students in related marine technology undergraduate programs will be given preference.

*SCA Sustainability Internships in Pacific Grove

ARAMARK Sustainability Intern-Asilomar Conference Grounds, Pacific Grove, CA

 5/23/2013 - 11/23/2013      Duration: 27 weeks

 

The Environmental Intern will serve as a key resource in supporting and advancing ARAMARK's commitment to Environmental Stewardship at Asilomar Conference Grounds based operations. The intern will work with staff and the Green Team at Asilomar to further the development of its EMS for 2012, primarily focused on development and implementation of Asilomar Integrated Action Plan towards meeting their 2012 environmental goals and objectives with an emphasis on sustainable food and beverage and sustainable green meetings initiatives. Specific Responsibilities to Include: Assist location Environmental Steward with EMS development. Participate on Green team; fulfill tasks assigned by the Steward and Green team related to EMS development. Take a lead role in implementing Asilomar's 2012 Integrated Action Plan (Sustainability Plan) with an emphasis on developing Asilomar's sustainable food and beverage and green meetings initiatives. This position is full-time (40 hrs/week). This position is not eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award.

  

Situated on 104 acres, Asilomar Conference Grounds consists of lodging and conference facilities positioned on the Monterey Peninsula at Pacific Grove, CA, between Pebble Beach golf course and the town of Monterey.

Job Description: CFEE is seeking a full-time Fellow (intern) to provide support and coordination for CFEE through the execution of responsibilities critical to the success of the Foundation's mission. The Fellow will report to the President, and will act in coordination with senior staff. 
 
Salary, Hours and Duration: $37,500 - $40,000 per year. Range is due to the fact that CFEE's summer schedule is often lighter than the fall, and the fellow may be started at 4 days/week (32 hours) and increased to Full Time as work load picks up (no more than three months part time). In addition to pay, fellow has the option for medical benefits, and the opportunity to travel within the state and internationally for CFEE events.

 *Coastal Watershed Council Fellowship Position

 The Coastal Watershed Council has been awarded a Packard Foundation grant that will support the hiring of a new CWC staff person. The individual selected for the Community River Champion fellowship will report to the Executive Director and assume responsibility for developing and implementing all stewardship programs at CWC. The Champion will also coordinate with CWC's Education Coordinator and Monitoring Coordinator to pursue the organization's mission: preserving and protecting coastal watersheds through education, stewardship and monitoring.

*Conservation and Land Management Internship Program

 

 

The Chicago Botanic Garden is currently seeking qualified persons (post-graduation) for over 85 paid internships to assist professional staff at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Park Service (NPS), US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and US Geologic Survey (USGS). Internships are primarily located in one of 13 western states, including Alaska. Each internship is unique and may focus on botany, wildlife, or a combination of the two. Projects may include collecting seed for restoration and conservation  purposes, and collecting data on threatened and endangered species and habitats. Permaculture Alternative Spring Break in Nicaragua  

Lost Valley Educational Center (a sustainability education center and aspiring ecovillage in Oregon) and partner community Hijos del Maiz (a local village benefit association in northern Nicaragua) are offering Permaculture Alternative Spring Break courses on location in Nicaragua this March.  The experience will be a unique combination of daily bilingual permaculture classes, a related hands-on service project, and semi-private Spanish lessons by professional instructors.  Students stay with experienced host families in a tight-knit community with a tragic history, a flowering present, and a belief in social justice.  All this in the warm, dry tropics, in a program where participants are taken care of the entire time while in country.

The course length is one week, and is run three consecutive weeks, March 2-9, 9-16, and 16-23

*Robert L. Wiegel Scholarship for Coastal Studies

 

This scholarship of at least $1000 annually honors a graduate student pursuing a Master's or Doctoral Degree at a California university or college whose work best exemplifies the passion for coastal science/ engineering that has typified the career work of Robert L. Wiegel, Professor Emeritus of Coastal Engineering , University of California, Berkeley. 

 

Award Criteria

  • The award will be made to a student pursuing a Master's degree or in the early phases of a doctoral program at a California university or college.
  • The study must deal with a coastal problem occurring in the marine environment (e.g. beaches, the nearshore zone, ports/harbors, coastal rivers and bluffs, lagoons, and wetlands) preferably in the state of California. The search for a solution to the problem should be a study goal.
  • Preference will be given to students who undertake field work with the intent of discovering the true nature of the problem while experiencing a wide range of natural conditions.
  • The work must identify the importance of the research and the inter-related nature of the scientific/engineering findings with the social, economic, and environmental concerns so commonly encountered in the coastal zone.
  • As promoted by Prof. Wiegel throughout his career, the work must demonstrate a high level of scholarship, in which the applicant must clearly state the importance of the work and indicate what related research has been previously conducted.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is currently advertizing two student programs for students in oceanic, environmental, biological and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing, physical and social sciences including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education.  Many of the disciplines NOAA employees study overlap with USDA.

The NSF Directorates for Biological Sciences (BIO), Geosciences (GEO), Engineering (ENG), Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS), and Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) and the Office of Cyberinfrastructure (OCI) are accepting proposals to conduct research on the potential threat to the North American west coast from debris fields associated with the March 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

Camila de la Llata is a bi-racial young woman who has acute leukemia and is in immediate need of a bone-marrow transplant. She is half Mexican and half Caucasian. We are seeking donors of mixed ethnicity: Caucasian and Latino. Camila was enrolled for her senior year of college when she was diagnosed. Doctors have said that chemo will not cure Camila, so they are hurrying to fins a match. Only 3% of the 9 million people registered as donors in the United States are of Latino heritage. The Oregon Leadership in Sustainability Graduate Certificate Program is currently accepting applications for our 2013-14 cohort.  Please send students and friends who are interested in careers in sustainability planning and sustainable development our way.  Our students take courses in sustainable design; sustainable transportation planning; systems thinking; communications skills; green cities; and energy and carbon planning.  We continue to review applications on a rolling basis through July 1st.

Bard MBA in Sustainability

 

The Bard MBA in Sustainability focuses on the business case for sustainability. We train students to see how firms can integrate economic, environmental, and social objectives, the triple bottom line, to create successful businesses that build a more sustainable world. Graduates of the Bard MBA Program will transform existing companies, start their own businesses, and pioneer new ways of operating that meet human needs, while protecting and restoring the earth's natural systems. The Bard MBA is a low-residency program structured around "weekend intensives" with regular online instruction between these residencies. Five of these intensives are held each term: four in the heart of New York City and one in the Hudson Valley. Residencies take place over four days, beginning Friday morning, and ending Monday afternoon.

The Bard Center for Environmental Policybelieves that to solve environmental challenges and achieve sustainability in our institutions and in society, government and business policies must be grounded in the best available science. Bard CEP's cohort-based program and intensive, campus-based, first-year curriculum require students to synthesize information from a range of disciplines and sources. The emphasis on science-based policy enables students to progress from knowledge of the issues to the formulation of feasible, effective policy responses. Distinctive program features include a modular approach to course work; close student-faculty interaction; professional internships; practical training in geographic information systems (GIS), statistics, leadership, and communication strategies; and research opportunities created to fit student interests.
