As the days get shorter and the temperatures get cooler our minds and hearts are moved to think about the Holidays and the end of another year. It is a time of year that brings smiles to most of our faces. A time when we get to connect with family, friends and loved ones we may not see as often. A time of year we think about the changes we made during the year. A time to reflect on goals achieved and those still a work in progress. A time we consider those we have lost. A time we open our hearts to those that are in need. A time we want to show our appreciation for those that helped us. And last but not least... a time of year that the stores, long lines and plethora of advertising surely have reminded us all to do our part and support the economy.
So as we contemplate what has happened during this past year and look forward with great anticipation to 2013 let’s do our part to not just sit back and watch things happen around us. Let’s control our own destinies and be part of a solution for our individual and collective success. While it is true some things may be out of our control, we control more than we think or maybe want to acknowledge. So let’s not focus on what is out of our control, but in 2013 do our best to improve what we can control, whether it is with our businesses, with our families, with our neighbors or individually. Let’s resolve to make 2013 even better than this past year and exceed all expectations.

A Model Teaching Ground for Sustainability
Constructed during the 70s, an energy-ignorant time when America was not as concerned with sustainable practices, Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) was built with no strategic thought as to the layout of the campus’ buildings, energy efficiency and water conservation for its desert landscape... — facilitiesmagazine.com

Ron’s Ramblings - Hurricane Sandy
For those living on the East Coast, October 29, 2012 will be a day that will live in ‘infamy’. No, they were not attacked by a foreign enemy, as we were in 1941; rather Mother Nature unleashed her power and changed the lives of millions of people and much of the East Coast line of New Jersey for ever. It is at times such as these that one has to reflect on one’s mortality and how small and inconsequential we all are in confronting the forces of Nature. It’s also at times like these for people to put their politics and differences aside and come together. And that’s exactly what was done in so many towns and states that were personally affected by the storm known as Sandy. — more at gpe1.com

Salt River Fields at Talking Stick
Last Spring I decided to go on a tour of Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. The tours were offered on Saturday mornings. I was looking forward to touring the first spring training facility to receive the LEED Gold for being a newly constructed facility. The distinction is given for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, in other words, a very “green” facility. — more at gpe1.com

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
This October I participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K walk in downtown Phoenix with my company, GPE. The fundraising efforts and event went very well; we started early on in August spreading the information and gathering early donations. The day of the actual walk I came with GPE as well as family and friends to participate in the 5K walk. It was mid-October, the weather was perfect, and an overall positive attitude seemed to be everywhere I looked. — more at gpe1.com

What Makes a Cool Office?
For any company, but especially a start-up, an office is much more than just four walls, a bunch of desks, some laptops, and an instant-coffee machine. An office is a recruitment tool, a second home, a place to hang out with friends, a place to be inspired, and, particularly for entrepreneurs with huge goals, the place that will serve as the launch pad into building the next billion-dollar company. — more at inc.com
An Experimental New Starbucks Store: Tiny, Portable,

This week in Colorado, Starbucks opened a store unlike any before it. There are no leather chairs or free power outlets. In fact, there’s no space for the customer at all. Inside the Latest Office-Design Craze: Hot Desking
The cubicle’s days are numbered. A concept called “hot desking” is rewriting the rules on how companies should landscape their work environments. By ditching desks and dividers, the hot-desking faithful make the entire office--and more--their workspace. This free-range approach, in which employees (and their laptops) shuffle between open tables, couches, and stations, encourages greater collaboration and innovation among co-workers. — more at inc.com
