From Your Pastor

Annually we report on the health of our church to our presbytery, our denomination's regional gathering of churches which helps provide oversight to us.  At our recent May meeting I had the privilege to share about this very encouraging season of ministry here at Faith.

We continue to see the Gospel proclaimed through our outreach ministries like Faith Explored which allows friends and neighbors to honestly wrestle with the claims of Christianity.

Recent guests at this spring's Faith Explored series are now worshipping with us on Sundays.  I also thanked God, in the presence of our presbytery, for the visitors He is sending to both of our worship services.

We are seeing those of all ages - youth, young families, adults - connect with the church.  And, this spring we have witnessed increased participation in our community groups with the launch of three new groups.  This encouraging season of ministry is rooted in God's grace and exhibited in the unity among our staff and leaders.

But with the encouraging reminder of God's work in our midst we should always guard against complacency.  I recently heard the description that we often yawn at God as we might at a tiger in its cage at the zoo.  If we think He's caged then we can approach Him on our own timeline and with our own desires.

Instead, we should remember that God is not a tame or caged God, and the work He wants to do in our lives might be dramatic.  And so, as we thank God for His blessings to us as a church, we should pray that He will make Himself known to us.  We pray that He will show us our sin and point us toward our hope in Christ.

Lee Tiang's Story: A Garland of Grace, A Crown of Beauty
Now available in our church library.

Pastor Steven Tan, who ministers in Singapore, writes with compassion about his wife Lee in his recently released family memoir, Lee Tiang's Story: A Garland of Grace, A Crown of Beauty, which is now available in our church library.  Steven, Lee, and their children were active participants in ministry here at Faith Church during the late 90s until their return to Singapore in 2008.  Shortly after their arrival Lee was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer's Disease.

Steven writes, "Before 2009, Alzheimer's Disease was a just a name. Now it has become an unwelcome guest who has come to stay."  Steven writes of their personal and theological struggles with the diagnosis and rapidly worsening condition.  Read the book, even if you never met Steven or Lee, to witness the grace of God displayed in suffering and the power of the Gospel displayed in their marriage.  As Lee's memories were lost to the disease, Steven began to interview those who knew her in childhood and Bible College.  The gathered stories began as a tool of personal reflection for the family, but the resulting book will strengthen your confidence in the power of an ordinary life lived for God's glory.

Our safe, affordable, loving, Christian preschool, kindergarten, and childcare is now accepting registrations for the 2014/15 school year.  Our Summer Camp completely filled up - so don't wait too long before you secure your spot for the Fall. Tell a friend.

Living Generously
by Harold Naylor

I think about generosity all the time.  Part of my job is to encourage generosity in others so that they participate in Kingdom building in a tangible way.  I have seen many good examples of this over the years.  Some donors even thank me for the privilege of giving to the school I work for because it helps them connect their passions with a wonderful outlet.  I want to think that I'm generous, too.  But, how do I know?  Is there an objective way of knowing?  Read this short passage below.

Generosity is a proof of your love - I don't want you to read this as an order. It is only my suggestion, prompted by what I have seen in others of eagerness to help, and here is a way to prove the reality of your love. 2 Corinthians 8:8 J.B. Phillips "It is clear that Paul is not ordering the Corinthians to send money to those who are suffering want, but encouraging them to do so, demonstrating that they have the right attitude toward God and other people. In return for that they will undoubtedly receive a reward."

Ambrosiaster sometime between 366-384 in Commentaries on Romans and 1 & 2 Corinthians trans and ed. Gerald Bray (Downers Grove, IL: IVP, 2009) 237.

I am sharing a devotional from 2 Corinthians 8-9 this morning at my meetings in the Washington D.C. area and so I read Ambrosiaster for edification. I love how he basically says that generous sharing with those who are suffering is what God's people do! It is the proof of our love.

As others look at your life and mine, what does our generosity prove?

We are all part of the body of the church, each of us bringing our own gifts and talents as we do church together. We couldn't do it without you.  Volunteer Today.

A Minute For Marriage
Dr. Barbara Shaffer, PhD

The Comfort Zone Idol:
One of the hazards of being human is self-centeredness.   At first, Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden in perfect harmony with God, each other, and the world God created, as well as having inner harmony and peace.  But when they disobeyed God, they became ashamed and afraid and hid from God (Genesis 3).  Like their disobedience, their hiding was self-centered:  Adam hid himself and Eve hid herself.  The couple's unity and safety with each other was gone.  It was every man/woman for himself/herself.  The subsequent curse God pronounced on Adam and Eve, and therefore on every individual and couple since then, solidified that self-centeredness and launched the power struggles that characterize human relationships, including and perhaps especially the marital relationship.

Self-centeredness manifests itself in many, many ways, one of which is the worship of the Comfort Zone idol, instead of worship of the Savior who sacrificed and said, "Follow me."  Why do we become angry at our spouses without just cause?  Often it's because they're not doing what we want them to do when and how we want them to do it.  We become "uncomfortable" when our unilateral, self-centered desires, assumptions and expectations are not fulfilled.

We are tired and so.....

Name Your Own Price Our God
Our God, the worship project

Tim Falcioni, John Giardiniere, and Brent DeLeo have written new songs in preparation for several new CDs that they've started recording with other Faith Church musicians.

As they prepare for their new releases in 2015, the previous Faith Church CD, Our God the worship project, is now available for a special price - Name Your Own Price.  That's right!  The digital version of their previous album is available for whatever you'd like to pay.  All sales will be used to help them fund the upcoming recordings so that they can continue to proclaim Christ to the world through music.
