The Resource Connection
Weekly Update - July 22, 2015
|
I'm back from vacation and ready to party. Are you ready?
Are you wondering what I'm talking about?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) turns 25 years this year and we have a lot to celebrate. Join the City of Worcester and area social service agencies, educators, advocates, family and friends for a celebration at Union Station, Saturday, July 25th, 2015 from 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM.
The celebration will showcase local talent and resources and will include entertainment, interactive exhibits and activities, educational resources, food and dance.
The Americans with Disabilities Act protects the civil rights of people with disabilities. It's worth celebrating this landmark law signed by President George H.W. Bush in 1990.
I will be there representing HMEA and our Center and enjoying the afternoon with my son, who was only 5 when this was enacted. I remember it vividly, and feeling as if this would make a real difference in his life, and it has! But the work is not finished yet. This Monday,at a celebratory event in Washington, President Obama spoke to the remaining challenges ahead for those with disabilities and those who advocate for them.
"Now, days like today are a celebration of our history. But they're also a chance to rededicate ourselves to the future - to address the injustices that still linger, to remove the barriers that remain," Obama said. "We all know too many people with disabilities are still unemployed - even though they can work, even though they want to work, even though they have so much to contribute." (read more)
I hope to see many of you at this event, and to work with you in the future to make a difference in the lives of our sons and daughters. So this Saturday bring the whole family, it is important that all our children understand the history of the disability rights movement if they are to become self advocates and part of the support system of their siblings as adults. It's never too early for them to learn and become empowered.
