President's Message
Elaine Headshot

On December 5th, the world lost a true leader with Nelson Mandela's passing.  In 1990, I was among the thousands of people at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Charles River Esplanade near downtown Boston who waited hours for Nelson Mandela to speak to us.  He was visiting Boston shortly after being released from serving 27 years in prison in South Africa.  I remember it as if it were yesterday.  His joy, vitality, gentleness, wisdom and sheer strength of character was evident the moment he came on stage.

After he was released from prison, Mr. Mandela sat down with his oppressors and transformed South Africa.  He did not want to replace white domination with black domination.  His successful negotiations culminated with him being the first democratically elected president of a new multi-racial democracy.  Surely much remains to be done in South Africa but Nelson Mandela made it possible for South Africa to have a future.

As we close out 2013, take a moment to appreciate Mr. Mandela's accomplishments in South Africa and the effect he had across the globe.  This is also a good time to pledge that in 2014 you will redouble your personal efforts to make racial equity more attainable here at home.

In this issue, you will enjoy reading about our successful Student Leadership Forum.  There were 132 students coming from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds at the forum and they all had great things to say about their experience.  In addition, we bring you updates on recent fair housing cases on Long Island.

I hope you end 2013 on a joyous note and I wish you well for the New Year.

Warm regards,

Updates: Long Island Fair Housing Caseshousing

Over the past week, there has been major news in several fair housing cases on Long Island, with good news coming out of both Island Park and Garden City.  In Island Park, the Village has tentatively agreed to settle a suit brought in 1990 to challenge the Village's misuse of HUD funds in the 1980s.  Meanwhile, in Garden City, after an 11 day trial, the Court has held that Garden City's rezoning of property owned by Nassau County violated the Fair Housing Act and other civil rights laws.  In Huntington the Town Board considered a proposal to settle a fair housing case there; however, the Town Board rejected the proposal and voted to continue negotiating with the plaintiffs.  For information on these cases, please see the full article.

"This program has been so eye opening and informative. It has been a privilege to be a part of this experience" -student participant

It was our most successful Student Leadership Forum to date!

On November 16, 2013 ERASE Racism hosted 132 high school students (from 18 schools across Nassau and Suffolk County) and their chaperones, assisted by 13 volunteers and 4 ERASE Racism staff. The students participated in the day-long program which was described as "eye-opening", "awesome" and "life-changing" by students. From our keynote speaker to the group discussions and activities, students learned about the history of racism, how prevalent it still is today and what they can do to bring about change.

"The information from this leadership forum changed my life"

"My students could not stop talking on the bus on the way home about their feelings and reactions to what they learned on Saturday" -student chaperone
