President's Message
Thanks to ERASE Racism's staff, Board of Directors, College of Advisors, volunteers and supporters, 2012 has been a year full of accomplishments. At the beginning of the year we released a survey of black Long Islanders about their housing preferences, which helped to dispel many myths about segregation (click here to read the report). We also held trainings, forums and events to engage our supporters and the wider public about issues related to fair housing and education equity. We've included these examples and more in our 12 favorite highlights of 2012, which you will see below.
With these accomplishments in mind we go into the New Year energized and inspired by the possibility of what can be done to further racial equity. Already we have three important events planned for 2013. The year will kick off with our 4th Annual Student Leadership Forum on January 21st. Then in April I will deliver the annual Howard A. Glickstein Civil Rights and Public Policy Lecture at Touro Law Center. Finally, on June 5th we will have our Annual Benefit with honoree Kenneth Chenault. We also look forward to new education equity forums and an expansion of our fair housing work.
While there is much work to be done in the New Year, we won't be able to accomplish our goals without your support. We hope you will consider making an end-of-year donation. Any amount helps! Looking forward to working with you in the New Year!

| New Research Findings
ERASE Racism's most recent demographic analysis of Long Island explores changes in our population from 2000 to 2010. Here are some of the key findings:
Despite a 20% increase in the proportion of people of color in the region, levels of segregation remain very high.
- In 2010 the average black resident lived in a neighborhood that was THREE AND A HALF times as black as the region.
- In 2010 the average Hispanic lived in a neighborhood that was TWICE as Hispanic as the region.
- Long Island is much more segregated by race than by income.
There are racial disparities in housing costs; a greater amount of gross income for black and Latino renters and homeowners is going to housing costs as compared to whites and Asians who on average earn much more.
- Even though blacks and Hispanics have considerably lower family incomes and household incomes than whites and Asians, they pay a comparable amount in monthly rent.
- Blacks and Hispanics pay more in monthly owner costs than whites even though there average income is much lower.
There are significant racial disparities in education.
- Based on graduation rates, 2.7% of black students, 4.5% of Hispanic students, 28% of white students and 30% of Asian students have access to the best performing school districts.
- 0% of residents who live in a segregated Hispanic neighborhood (over 50% Hispanic) have access to a high performing school district and only 6% of residents who live in a segregated black neighborhood (over 50% black) have access to a high performing school district.

ERASE Racism's 12 Highlights of 2012
1) We strengthened our understanding of segregation on Long Island by conducting a survey of African Americans on Long Island about their housing preferences. We learned that most black Long Islanders prefer to live in an integrated neighborhood with an even mix of black/white residents.
2) We had a successful Annual Benefit with inspiring honorees Dr. Roscoe Brown, Ms. Joan Saltzman and North Shore LIJ.
3) Long Island students had the unique opportunity to speak with former Tuskegee Airman, Dr. Roscoe Brown at our 2012 Student Roundtable event.
4) Kwesi Aaron, Roosevelt HS graduate, won $500 in ERASE Racism's 1st Essay Contest.
5) We raised consciousness about structural racism and the need to create racial equity through our Unraveling Racism Trainings, and we conducted our first structural racism training in Spanish.
6) We facilitated discussions with our Partners about education equity though our June 12th Brown Bag sessions.
7) We enjoyed spending time with our wonderful volunteers and interns.
8) We were honored and grateful to receive two $25,000 grants from Community Advocates to further our fair housing advocacy.
9) We developed stronger relationships with our Partners for Racial Equity during two wonderful theater outings and a meet and greet event.
10) We presented our new detailed demographic research on population change and correlations with racial disparities to the College of Advisors, Board of Directors and supporters.
11) Martin "Marty" Schwartz, a long-time ERASE Racism supporter, joined our Board of Directors.
12) We expanded our fair housing advocacy through new collaborations with Make the Road NY, NY Communities for Change, Community Voices Heard, Center for Popular Democracy, the Fair Housing Justice Center and the NJ Fair Share Housing Center.

RESCHEDULED The Student Leadership Forum will be held on Jan. 21, 2013

Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy we rescheduled our 4th Annual Student Leadership Forum. We're excited to announce that the new date is January 21st, 2013, which is Martin Luther King Day. What better way to commemorate the legacy of Dr. King's brave and unwavering commitment to racial justice than by training the next generation of social justice activists?
The Student Leadership Forum is a one-day orientation to ERASE Racism's Student Leadership Program-a series of workshops that teach high-school students about the history of race and racism in the U.S., how it continues to have an impact on one's opportunities, and the changes that can be made to bring about more racial equity. The forum is led by student volunteers and adults, and uses fun, hands-on activities to engage participants, such as line debates, a treasure hunt and a movie screening.
