Greetings!

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

I always look forward to the beginning of the school year. The freshman retreat is a great way for everyone to begin this important step in life with the proper spiritual perspective. The first day of school begins with Chapel in the main gymnasium; everyone excited about seeing friends and anticipating the excitement of a new year. More importantly, that service is an opportunity to begin the year with a focus that will help steer us in the direction of God's call.

Our theme verse this year is a perfect launch point from which to begin this new experience. Our focus is on God's purpose. Not our purpose, His. Not our plan, His. Not our abilities, His, that He works through us. We are who we are, where we are, doing what we are because He has a purpose, a calling for each of us. High school is the most exciting time of life where we explore what that purpose could possibly be, where we are exposed to so many different opportunities and experiences that help us find our passions and discover our gifts and grow in our relationship with Him.

Please pray for your student and our school as we begin this year. Pray that we each grow in our understanding of the purpose God has for us. Pray that, by His power, we achieve that purpose. Pray that we ultimately find our way home, called, fulfilled, trusting in His love and grace.

Blessings,

History...

"Storytelling is the currency of community. The best stories are moving because at their heart, they shine light on the community of people that they serve."
~ Ale Besdikian

As we approach our 50th Anniversary of Rockford Lutheran School, it is important that we take the opportunity to share our stories and shine the light on our community and the community we serve. Here in this corner of the newsletter, we will share those stories. Do you have one that you'd like to share?  Let us know...

then...
now...with wife & daughter

It is unbelievable to me that 14 years have passed since I last walked the hallways at Lutheran High School each day as a student. Even though the time passes quickly, my fond memories of LHS have not. I was blessed by teachers, coaches and staff who were truly committed to helping me learn not only skills for life but also about the very Person who gives life. LHS was the place where I learned and saw firsthand that faith was something far greater than Sunday mornings at church.

Preparing to Lead

Twenty-two upperclassmen have been preparing this summer to help lead Freshman Retreat August 15-16. On Saturday Aug. 8, they had the chance to learn how to lead small groups with Keith Peters. As they bonded together as a small group, they experienced a glimpse of what the freshmen will go through soon enough. We are so thankful for each of their willingness to impact younger students and to mentor them through a sometimes challenging year as they meet once a month with the students from their group.
We would appreciate your prayers for not only our leaders, but also the freshmen that will be traveling to Lake Geneva for an unforgettable weekend. Keep your eyes peeled for a brief description of the fun from Freshman Retreat!
Continuing to Grow

What did you do over summer vacation? We think it's important for you to know that in addition to some much needed rest and relaxation, members of our faculty participated in professional development activities this summer in an effort to continue their own education and pursuit of Excellence - one of our Core Values.
  • Mr. Freudenberg spent part of his summer teaching biology at Rock Valley College.
  • Mr Vaughan attended a global economics forum hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
  • Miss Ernst attended a conference in Chicago to learn about Google's exciting new classroom apps.
  • Mrs. Dobler attended a two-day seminar on Chromebooks and Google Classroom.
  • Mr. Martin attended a NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) conference in Minneapolis, MN on the implementation of STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) labs and projects in science classes.
  • Mrs. Stradtmann attended workshops for Google Classroom and Google Aps with several of our 8th grade teachers.

The first day of school (and the end of summer) has almost arrived! On Wednesday, August 19th, the bell will ring at 7:45 am signaling the start of the 2015-2016 school year.
