This Friday
We hit the road this Friday with a visit to Chaddock School to see their brand new building addition. Chaddock recently held an open house for the public to view the new facility and now it is our chance to do likewise. For those members who we haven't seen lately, this would be a great opportunity to rejoin us. Come back. We miss you!
Friday Last

The Executive Director of The District, Bruce Guthrie, joined us last Friday. Bruce is a 1977 graduate of Unity High School and after graduating from Western Illinois University he accepted a marketing internship with the NBA's San Antonio Spurs. He spent 28 years with the Spurs, moved on to work for the Texas Motor Speedway and then returned home to head The District in 2014. His son is an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz of the NBA.

Bruce mentioned that The District, area wise, is one of the biggest in the nation. It covers an area from the river to 12th Street and from Broadway to State streets. The District is a volunteer driven organization with a mission to promote, revitalize, and preserve Quincy's Historic Business District through broad-based community support, including both public and private partnerships. The District encompasses some 600 businesses and employs over 8500 people with 80 retail stores and some 30 plus restaurants.

Some of the major events include the Farmer's Market, Blues in the District, Concerts on the Plaza, Unique Spaces Tour, a Street Concert, Loft Tours among other events.

One of the challenges The District faces is getting more people to move to the downtown area and having places for those people to live. Thanks to Doug Greenwell for his introduction of Mr. Guthrie.

This and That

Jared Haugh, that would be the immediate past president of the Club for those who may have forgotten what he looks like, handled the prayer in typical Haugh fashion to begin the proceedings.

The Pledge of Allegiance was begun by Eric Thomas who with firm allegiance bellowed out an "I" to start the recital which was followed, like puppy dogs, by the membership's collaborative enhancement of the remainder of the pledge.

Communication is a wonderful thing and something the Club needs some work on. Somehow word wasn't passed down that we only had 25 tickets remaining on the roll of tickets needed for the 50-50 card draw last week. So without such roll, we took a bye on last week's shot at winning over $320. By the way, it is actually an Ace of Spades that will make you a winner not the Ace of Diamonds as your humble reporter printed. (How long have we been doing this?).

The Tail-Twister duties shuttled from Jared Haugh to Steve Peters after our esteemed President Brian Koch was not informed as to who was Tail-Twisting (There's that Communications thing again). Steve did manage to entertain the throng with a Hillary Clinton ceiling fan joke. He also managed to suck-up to potential Adams County Sheriff, Jon McCoy, stating that his vote was the one that put McCoy over the top to become a member of the Club.
Speaking of that, Mr. McCoy, a guest of Gary Farha, was accepted into the Club after his final reading was held.

President Brian Koch read a thank you letter from the Veteran's Parade Committee thanking us for our $200 donation. He also thanked Cory Watson for filling in for him the previous week.

Perry Terwelp invited the Club to be a part of the St. Francis School Golf Outing. Perry almost forgot to mention that beer would be involved. Leads me to the line of "I went to a golf outing and a beer fest broke out".

Glen Swick addressed the Club about being a sponsor for the upcoming Tri-State Warrior's Outreach Run. The monies raised would go to help struggling veteran's pay some of their bills. The Board met after the meeting and voted to be a $250 sponsor for this event.

Dennis Koch broke out our new magnetic name tags. They carry a strong magnetic field so don't stand too close to the metal towel dispenser in the men's room or you may be stuck there for a while. Gary Hillebrenner was the recipient of $5 as his name was selected as the winner of what looks to be a weekly event, the "Name Tag Contest". So make sure you wear your name tag each week.

Lines of the Week

The line belongs to Skip Rueter who, after hearing we were going to meet at Chaddock School next week, said

 - "Hell, now you tell me. I just left there 20 minutes ago."

Exchange Minute

Around the Nation

Planning a trip to St. Petersburg Florida this fall? If so, you might want to check out Ribfest, sponsored by the Northeast Exchange Club of St. Pete. The club was chartered in 1970 and started their version of Ribfest (borrowed from the Exchange Club of Naperville) around 1970.

Over the last 26 years, the club has raised $4.6 million dollars from the event. The supports 50 local organizations and was able to doante $1 million to the construction of All Children's Hospital in St. Pete.

This year's event will be held the weekend of Veteran's Day - November 11-13 in a waterfront park along the Gulf of Mexico. This year's music schedule features Huey Lewis & the News on Friday and the Doobie Brothers on Saturday, among others. Like the Naperville Ribfest, the event features two stages, with the biger "name" bands performing on the main stage and smaller and local artists performing on the secondary stage.

A baker's dozen (that's 13) ribbers will compete for the title of Best Ribs (with our own Dennis Koch as one of the celebrity judges this year). The ribbers will also have their food available for sale throughout the event.

The Family Fun Zone features arts and crafts for the young ones, with most of the activities free to kids 12 and under. The exception is a number of "inflatables" that have a flat fee for the day.

As with most of these types of events, the Exchange Club raises money through corporate sponsorship. Various packages ranging from simple ticket packages to naming rights offer both small and large companies the opportunity to support the Club. Sonny's BBQ is the title sponsor, along with the Fran Haasch Law Group as Main Stage sponsor.

Ticket prices range from $30-$35 for entry (discounted when purchased from one of the sponsors) to "Boss Hog" packages from $175-$200 for a one day pass to $500 for a three day pass. The Boss Hog package includes admission, reserved seating at the main stage, lunch and dinner, 4 drink tickets and private air conditioned restrooms.

So how did Dennis end up as a celebrity judge? The Northeast ST Pete Exchange Club (along with the Naperville IL and Santa Rosa CA Clubs) offered packages to their events as live auction items during the National Convention in Houston this year. Naperville offered a package to their Ribfest next July, while The California experience featured tours and wine tasting in California's wine country. Dennis and Teri were the successful bidders for the St Pete package, which included the judging opportunity for both Dennis and Teri.

Packages such as those, along with other events and promotions and challenge grants helped the National Exchange Club Foundation raise about $75,000 during the convention. Those funds are used to help support the National Exchange Club and our Programs of Service and represent about 15% of the Foundation's total budget for the year..
