2014-15 Lincolnland District Best Bulletin Award Recipient

This Friday
We will find out what's happening in 'The District' as the Executive Director, Bruce Guthrie joins us. It's another great opportunity to invite a prospective member as your guest. Remember, as a prospective member there is no charge for them to enjoy lunch with us. Otherwise, guests cost $10, payable to Chris Parker.

The new Maine Street Magazine was the topic of last week's meeting with Publisher Paula Bichsel and Managing Editor Eric Bichsel joining us. They discussed the long road it took to get their project off and running. The initial magazine came out in late August and the intention is for it to be a monthly periodical. Some 15,000 copies were printed for the initial publication and it has been well received.

The Bichsel's actually own an advertising agency and have clients locally as well as from the Chicago area and as far away as California. Their goal is to visit with employers and employees and hear their stories and then share those stories with their readers. With some 88-hundred jobs in The District alone, there are plenty of stories out there. The best of luck to them on their new venture. Thanks to Chuck Venvertloh for his introduction.
Youth of the Month

We also had our first Youth of the Month award winner announcement for this school year as Alice Lam of Quincy Senior High School was our recipient for the month of September. She is the first of six students who will be recognized as Youth of the Month by the Exchange Club. One of the six recipients will also represent the Club at the District competition and receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Club and perhaps move on to the District and National competition where they could win a $10,000 scholarship.

Alice is a four year Student Council member, the All-School president, a member of the National Honor Society and a Key Club member. She has a grade point average of 4.557, an ACT of 32 and plans on attending college and eventually go into Law School. Special thanks to Art Awerkamp for his introduction of QHS Counselor Chad Struck in the absence of Committee Chairman John Johannes. Mr. Struck then introduced Alice, her mother Ms. Hui and QHS Principal Danielle Arnold. This year's committee membership under John Johannes includes Art Awerkamp, Lenny Biallas, Mike Llewellyn and Bruce Broemmel

This and That

Cory Watson presented a well thought out prayer to begin the proceedings.

That was followed by Chris Parker's hole-in-one-ish "I" to initiate  The Pledge of Allegiance.

Joel Koch handled the 50-50 card draw worth $320 if the Ace of Diamonds was drawn. Unfortunately for Steve Wellman it wasn't. Stevie drew a 7 of Clubs. So the pot climbs next week.

The Tail-Twister duties were handled by a bucket-less Bruce Broemmel who fortunately was able to come up with an "appropriate" joke involving a lying Priest playing Golf on a Sunday morning. Lord, please place the lightning bolt in the right direction. I'm just the reporter.

Vice-President Cory Watson handled the meeting in the absence of President Brian Koch, almost flawlessly. Other than telling the club to go elsewhere next week, he did fine. He did mention the Board of Directors agreed to purchase a Freedom Gallery for $1,500 designated to go to QHS (a Gallery has more pictures and the Shrine more documents). We all know a book with pictures is soooo much better than a book with words. Only in the new America!

Cory also announced that the Board has agreed to spend $300 for our guest speaker for our One Nation Under God program in November.

Perry Terwelp brought the only guest we had at the meeting. Grant Meyer was his guest. Grant is an injured Q.U. basketball player who is working on his Master's and is employed at Northwest Mutual Insurance Company in Quincy. Grant is a prospective member as well!

Not sure if anyone noticed this. After our meeting on September 16th, a meeting where Rob Mellon of the Historical Society invited members to come to the John Wood Mansion, the QPD police blotter showed a call that night to 911as someone reported a man sitting on the steps of the John Wood Mansion at 11:55 pm. Police were called and Barbie came and picked up Skip. (might have a few details miss-represented)

Lines of the Week

The line belongs to two people. The first line goes to Dick Wentura who, after hearing how the new Maine Street Magazine was printed, commented

 - "Maybe you can help Chuck Venvertloh print ballots in November". Ouch!

The second line goes to Bob Hays. After Eric Thomas asked a question to our speaker she replied "I hope I answered your question". At that point Bob said,

 - "Don't worry about it, he doesn't remember the question anyway". 4Another ouch!

If you have driven by the Refreshment Services Pepsi building at 12th and Locust, you've undoubtedly noticed that they are making improvements to their loading facilities.

While that will be great for motorists traveling Locust, who will no longer have to wait while trucks back into the loading dock while blocking traffic, it's not so good for our Field of Honor site.

The improvements consist of a new driveway through the area that we used for parking, and all of the dirt that was excavated for the project has been piled on the site of the Field itself.

As a result, this year's Field of Honor will be held on the front lawn of John Wood Community College at 48th and Harrison.

Art and members of his committee met at John Wood last week to work out the details, and the site will provide us a very attractive Field with plenty of visibility and parking.

The down side of the move is that we won't be on the grounds of the Illinois Veterans Home, where many veterans reside.

There will more information on this year's Field in the weeks to come, including a road trip to John Wood on Veterans Day to assist in the set-up.

The plan is to have the Field up November 11-13.

As noted in the bulletin, the Board approved the purchase of a Freedom Gallery for the new History wing at Quincy High School. If you would like to take a look at the Gallery, you can see one at the Roots of Freedom website by clicking here.

We'll work with QND to see if we can find a suitable spot for a Gallery there and put one in the budget for next year.

While the Freedom Shrines have documents from throughout history, the Freedom Gallery focuses more on the founding of the Nation.
