Rob Mellon, the Executive Director of the Quincy Historical Society was our guest speaker last Friday. Founded in 1893 by local citizens led by Charles Francis Adams, Jr., the Quincy Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting knowledge about the full range of Quincy history. It remains a community-based organization even as it deals with topics of national, international, and local, interest.

At its home in the Adams Academy Building, the Society maintains collections of historical archives and artifacts. Its museum and library are open to the public year-round. Mr. Mellon took the time to talk about the John Wood Mansion's history dating back to 1835 as well as the History Museum at 4th and Maine and the Lincoln Gallery.
Many are surprised to learn that there are multiple documents with Abraham Lincoln's signature on them at the John Wood Mansion, The historical Society has owned the John Wood Mansion since 1907.

Mr. Mellon has served in the U.S. Army and reserves for over 20 years and is a former broadcaster and teacher. He graduated from QND in 1989 and received his Masters and MBA from Quincy University. Thanks to Vic Welper for the introduction of Mr. Mellon.

This and That

Steve Green presented the prayer flawlessly to initiate the meeting.

Everyone stood for the Pledge of Allegiance as Dick Wentura projected, in car salesman style, a boisterous "I" to initiate the pledge.

Cory Watson handled the 50-50 card draw last week. The pot, worth $294 was not claimed by Jeff Dorsey who had the correct number but drew a 10 of Clubs. It was the wrong number and wrong suit. Not good for the Big Dog.

The Tail-Twister duties were handled by Rick Gengenbacher who entertained the Club with a joke as he made the rounds.

The Club voted to bring in Jon McCoy as a new member. McCoy is currently running for the Adams County Sheriff's position against Brian Vonderhaar. Vonderhaar is also becoming a member of the Exchange Club. Both Vonderhaar and McCoy are being sponsored by Gary Farha. Talk about playing both sides of the fence!

President Brian Koch also announced that David Brink has tendered his resignation from the Club.

Here's to a speedy recovery to Lenny Biallas who arrived at the Club with his arm in a sling. You should have seen the other guy. Lenny had shoulder surgery. He'll do anything to keep from painting the ceiling at home.

Congratulations to Joel Koch who was featured in the Sunday edition of the Herald Whig's 2016 "20under40" insert. Joel is one of 20 people chosen who have been recognized for his contributions to help make the Quincy area a better place to live. Way to go Joel! He joins Eric Thomas, who was selected back in 2007 and John Lavery, who was also selected in 2007.  John is the son of Mike Lavery.

Happening Elsewhere in Exchange - Coastal Carolina Fair

Since 1957, the Exchange Club of Charleston SC has owned and operated the Coastal Carolina Fair - a fair that was started in 1924 by the Charleston Agriculture and Industrial Association. At the time, the Charleston club had 60 members and a vision to grow the fair.

Their endeavor got off to a rocky start - in 1958, just months before the start of the fair, the Exhibit Building was destroyed by arson, forcing exhibits to the bleachers of a nearby football stadium.

A series of moves to larger locations began in 1959 with a 38 acre plot. Today, the fair operates on 170 acres with parking for 10,000 cars and runs for a week around Halloween each year. This year's fair is scheduled for October 27-November 6.

With nearly 300 members, the Charleston Club is one of the largest in Exchange and the Fair provides funding for all of their programs of service and grants. Last year, the Fair netted about $800,000 which was granted to 95 area organizations.

The Exchange Club of Charleston is the home club of 2015-16 National President Dan McQueeney.
