Friday Last

Last Friday Barb Richmiller was our speaker and she talked about Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia. Barb's presentation featured a look at the brain, the difference between Alzheimer's and Dementia, tips on medications available and foods to eat to slow it down. This debilitating disease is affecting more and more people every day.  Not just the victims, but also the caregivers. Our Club is no exception. The numbers speak for themselves. More than 5-million people are living with Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. and is the only one in the top ten diseases with no way to prevent, slow or cure. Over 220-thousand people in Illinois are currently living with Alzheimer's. In Illinois, there are over 590-thousand caregivers who provide $8 billion worth of unpaid care to loved ones with Alzheimers. Locally, the 20th annual Walk to End Alzheimers will be held on Saturday, September 10th at Clat Adams Park. Registration that morning is at 8am with a short ceremony at 8:45am followed by the walk at 9am. For more information on the walk, you can go to www.alz.org/walk or call 228-1111.

Special thanks to Mike Lavery for his introduction of Mrs. Richmiller.

This and That

The right Reverend Gary Farha presented the prayer and in keeping with the theme of the program "forgot the rest of the prayer".

Skip Reuter took a deep breath and bellowed out an "I" and off we all went with the rest of the Pledge of Allegiance. It's amazing how that happens each week.

President Brian was not present so another Koch stepped up to run the meeting. And run the meeting Joel Koch did. Oh, there's no stopping those Kochs. Joel did mention our membership currently stands at 98.

They were drawing cards in LaGrange during the meeting but not in our meeting as the 50-50 card draw was not held. The pot, worth over $235, will be available for winning this Friday.

The Tail-Twister duties belonged to Jeff Dorsey who announced to the membership that to keep his doctor happy, he re-named his bathroom Jim instead of John. This way he can tell his doctor that he goes to the "Jim" at least three times a day.

Chuck Venvertloh can use some assistance both Tuesday (Today) and Wednesday (Tomorrow) morning for Character Champions at Quincy University. Just show up at the Hall of Fame room at 8am one or both days.

Thanks to those who assisted Art Awerkamp with the Flags of Honor displays on Labor Day last Monday. Up next for this program will be the Field of Honor display. More on that in the weeks ahead.

For those members who will be traveling to Puerto Rico in the near future, you will now have the opportunity to visit a brand new Exchange Club just established in, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. I am sure while in Puerto Rico you will want to include this on your trip itinerary.

We had some special guests at the meeting last week as Karen Wellman, wife of Steve Wellman, was in attendance. Mike and Rich Lavery's brother, Denny, was also in attendance.

Exchange Minute

Parent Aide Program

Exchange Parent Aide provides technical assistance, training, affiliation, and accreditation to Exchange Parent Aide programs.

Exchange Parent Aides provide supportive and educational in-home services to families at risk of child abuse and neglect. In short, they teach at-risk parents how to be good parents.

Here in Illinois, Naperville's Project HELP operates a Parent Aide Program in the Chicago area.

At the National Convention in Houston, Neil Samuels, a mentor with Project Help was recognized as the Parent Aide of the Year - the first man to win the award. Neil was recognized, in part, for his efforts in assisting a felon who had served his time reunite with his son, who was in foster care. For a year, Neil met with the man in order to help him become a parent who could handle the responsibility of parenthood.

Samuels says men see things differently when it comes to raising children. He got involved as a Project HELP volunteer seven years ago because he knew his voice could be valuable to fathers who need a guide. "I thought it'd be easier for a dad to talk to a dad about his fathering rather than a mom," said the 62-year-old father of one.

Peggy McGuire, executive director of Project HELP, who suggested Samuels for the award, says "We just don't have enough male mentors and role models," she said. "I just wanted to highlight that this is what a man can give to a fellow man trying to raise his children."
Project HELP is currently training a second male parent mentor and a third has expressed interest in the program, which is supported by the Exchange Club of Naperville.
