This Friday
Walk to End
Our speaker this Friday will be Barb Richmiller who will be talking about Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia. This topic will hit home for many as several of us are dealing with someone afflicted with this dreaded disease. One date to keep in mind is Saturday, September 10 as the local Alzheimer's Association will be holding their annual Walk to End Alzheimer's at Clat Adams Park at 9am. Our speaker will have more to say about that this Friday.
Friday Last

Coach Rick Little of Quincy Senior High School and Coach Bill Connell or Quincy Notre Dame High School were our speakers last Friday.
Coach Connell is dealing with a numbers problem to start the season as he has just 42 players out for football. Twenty-two of them have some playing experience and the rest are inexperienced. That, added to the fact that 7 or 8 players will be playing on both sides of the ball, will make it a challenging season for the Raiders. They will have some good size up front this year. Although he didn't want to talk about it, talk he did when the subject of concussions came up. He feels the lack of players is a direct result of too many "concussions in football" stories.

Coach Little is entering his 10th season as head coach at QHS and is trying to make the playoffs for the 4th consecutive season. The Blue Devils entered the season with 15 consecutive wins at home. QHS has a good senior class "ready to go" and with 303 kids playing football in grades 1 thru 12, the future looks great.

The two teams will meet at QND on October 21st.

KHQA Sports Director, Chris Duerr, was t
he Master of Ceremonies for our meeting and had some great comments about both coaches on how they both help turn boys into young men through their football programs. Chris also mentioned how, through their work, football transcends into life experiences. Thanks Chris!

This and That

Jared Haugh somehow managed to present a stirring prayer and turned it into something related to watching football. Well, God likes a good gridiron battle too!

Chuck Venvertloh chose the right letter to start the Pledge of Allegiance and he did it with vigor. Must be football season and election time is getting closer.

Jared Haugh providing an update on the Club's golf outing at Friday's meeting. The team of Mike Lavery, Art Awerkamp, Chris Parker, Rich Howell and Jared Haugh won the rain-shortened event at Spring Lake Country Club with a 6 under par total. One casualty of the day occurred when Curt Moore using a 5 iron killed 5 worms and pulled his groin.

Speaking of golf, congratulations goes out to Rich Howell, who fired a hole-in-one last week. The ball went right into the clown's mouth to the surprise of everyone. Actually, he aced the 15th hole at Westview. Way to go Rich!

President Koch presented another reminder that a few of you have not paid your dues yet. Please take care of that as soon as possible. Remember, you can pay quarterly if that works better for you.

President Koch also announced the Club received a nice thank you card from the Johnson family as Jay Johnson's grandfather, Jim Johnson, passed away a while back. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Jay and his family on their loss.

President Koch also left a picture of the tables of the new Freedom Shrine Gallery that the Club plans to put up at Quincy Senior High School as part of the school's renovations.

After a three week hiatus, the Card Draw returned last Friday with Cory Watson conducting the event. Steve Green had the correct ticket. The pot, worth $235, was not captured as Steve drew a 3 of Clubs. No Green for Green last week.

The Tail-Twister duties were handled flawlessly by Bruce Broemmel. I say flawlessly because for the longest time he could not be heard over the talkative brethren gathered there. Once quieted down, they did enjoy a joke Bruce presented regarding a mulligan found during a body exam.
During Bruce's journey around the tables, Carlos Fernandez thanked Matt Anderson, a guest of his father Kent, for his donation to the Honor Flight years ago. Last week Honor Flight 38 was held.

In addition to Matt Anderson joining us, Mike Lavery introduced his brother Tom as his guest last Friday. By the way, he is also the brother of Rich but we won't hold that against him.

Jeff Dorsey presented "The News" through an onslaught of moans and groans from the audience. Since I got paid nothing to present "The News", you got what you paid for.

Lines of the Week

Goes to Jeff Dorsey (I gotta stop opening my mouth). After hearing coach Connell say he didn't want to talk about concussions in football and then talking about it for 3 or 4 minutes, Dorsey asked Connell if he wouldn't mind

 - "talking about concussions in football".

Freedom Gallery

Over in This and That, there is mention of a Freedom Gallery for Quincy High School. A Freedom Gallery differs from the Freedom Shrines that we have put up in the past in that the Shrines have a number of historic documents from the Magna Carta through the surrender agreement that ended World War II. A Freedom Gallery focuses on the founding of the country and includes several historic photos as well as the documents. The Galleries are produced by the Roots of Freedom program.

"The centerpiece of the Roots of Freedom education program is the Freedom Gallery. This stunning 23-piece display presents the story of America's founding in a visually stimulating manner. The Freedom Gallery was created to be a beautiful addition to any public or corporate building. Some schools refer to their gallery as the "learning wall" because of the many life lessons which are taught."

You can watch a video of the Freedom Gallery here.

We have had discussions with QHS about placing the Gallery in the History wing, and the teachers are excited about the addition. The plan is to add the gallery at QHS this year and work with QND to find an appropriate place to display a gallery at QND for placement next year. (They do take up quite a bit of space).

We'll work with the schools' maintenance departments to come up with some way to protect the galleries from vandalism - an unfortunate fact of life.

Funds for these projects are coming from the Flags of Honor program. We wanted to use these funds for some of our Americanism projects and helping educate our students on the founding of the country seemed like a good place to start.

Speaking of Flags, the final display of flags will take place on Monday (Labor Day), then we start finalizing plans for the Veterans Day Field of Honor on the grounds of the Illinois Veterans Home. We've already started the process by looking for a suitable location. (If you've been by the Vet's Home this summer on Locust, you've undoubtedly noticed a big pile of dirt on the usual site from the construction going on at Pepsi).
