This Friday
It's a football Friday meeting as we will hear from Coach Rick Little at Quincy Senior High School and Coach Bill Connell at Quincy Notre Dame High School. Both will talk about their teams and expectations.  Good meeting to bring a guest. Might have "The News" as well.

We took a wonderful tour of Quincy Senior High School to look over all the renovations that were made during the summer in preparation of the opening week of school this week. Principal Danielle Edgar-Arnold and Assistant Principal Jodie Steinke were our tour guides.

With the addition of the Freshman class added to the Senior High building this year, there will be over 1825 students enrolled this year with 102 teachers on the Senior High level. There will be 448 Freshman, 463 Sophomores, 432 Juniors and 482 Seniors enrolled this school year.

The English Department will see 12 new classrooms this year to go with one new Technical lab, one new Journalism lab, an extended cafeteria and new bus drop off areas. All classrooms will feature new smart-boards as well. The tour took us through the new workout rooms as well as a chemistry and history room. In addition, the new gym locker rooms were also part of the tour. Prior to the tour, the Exchange Club presented a $250 check to QHS. Thanks to Todd Moore for his introduction of our speakers and tour guides.

This and That

Educator Lenny Biallas presented the prayer which was followed by Eric Barnes' strong enunciation of the letter "I" to initiate the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Brian Koch mentioned that Jared Haugh would be providing an update on last week's golf outing at this Friday's meeting.

President Koch also reminded the few of you who have not paid your dues to please take care of that as soon as possible. Remember, you can pay quarterly if that works better for you.

Congratulations to David Adam who is celebrating his 19th year at the Herald Whig. While Dave continues to slave at work, Rich Zeidler has decided not to any more as he retired on his birthday, which was last Friday. Good luck on your retirement Rich. Look out fish in the area.

There was no Card Draw last week. Probably a good idea as gambling is not encouraged in a school building.

The Tail-Twister took another week off so look for a spirited table tour on Friday again.

Several guests were with us last Friday including Troy Terwelp, the son of Perry Terwelp. Also joining us were Steve Bange and Michael Bolt who were guests of Brian Koch.

On behalf of the Alzheimer's Association I would like to thank the Club for its $500 donation to the upcoming Walk to End Alzheimer's. We have several current and former members dealing or having dealt with this disease.

Lines of the Week

Somehow, the second line of last week wasn't published so I have added it this week.

It belongs to Art Awerkamp who, after being told that there would be a free drink waiting at the end of golf at Spring Lake, said

 -  "I'm done playing now".  Now wasn't that worth waiting another week.

Last Friday's lines belongs to Joel Koch and Art again. After reviewing the daily school schedule, there was a 9th hour listed for those students who need extra help which Jeff Dorsey claimed to be the Exchange Club hour. That comment was followed by Joel Koch's line of its

 - "Quincy's Second Finest Hour".

Then after Steve Wellman proclaimed his class was the first to graduate from the then new QHS (in the 70's), Art bellowed out,

 - "yeah, but the standards were lowered then".

Accepting the Challenge of Excellence (A.C.E.) Award

Last week we included information on the National Youth of the Year. This week we will highlight the National ACE Award (what we call our Bud Willer Award) winner.

Nora Ismail of Salt Lake City, Utah was named the National ACE winner at the Houston Convention last month. Nora is the American-born daughter of a Christian mother and Egyptian-Muslim father. When Nora  was 11, the family moved to Dubai to pursue a promising business opportunity.

Due to her father's support of her and her mother's Christian beliefs, Nora's father was in danger of being charged with apostasy, punishable by death.

The family was watched constantly and, when Nora turned 16, the family was told that she would have to marry a man chosen by a radicalized Muslim group.

At risk of death, Nora was snuck out of the country and sent to America, where she lives with family friends. Nora dreams to become an international business and human rights lawyer.
