This Friday
Our speakers this Friday will be Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. Not really. If I had said it would be President Brian Koch and Golf Chairman Jared Haugh no one would read on. We meet at Spring Lake Country Club for our meeting followed by golf for those who wish to play. If you haven'y signed up, call Jared Haugh TODAY!

Last Friday, Megan Schnur was our speaker from the Carthage Veterinary Service. Megan's topic was Farming & Food and she, through the use of a power point demonstration, showed how the agri-business has changed over the years to produce high quality food products. She showed how farming has evolved from the 18th century to today and why it needed to. According to research, by the year 2050 there will be 9.3 billion people on the planet which is 1/3 more than we have today. Farmers will need to produce 100% more than they are now to provide for the need. In 1960 the ratio of farmer to people served was 1 to 15 people. Today it is 1 farmer for 155 people. So farmers have had to adapt to survive. Megan's expertise is in the Pork industry and she showed examples of how the Pork production business has changed over the years to the point that some $6 billion in pork products are exported annually. It is an industry that is providing employment to many areas of the country. Her own office in Carthage employs some 80 to 90 people. Megan, a native of Indiana, is a graduate from Purdue University with a Master's Degree in Bio-Chemistry.  Thanks to Eric Thomas for his assistance with the introduction and the power point set-up.

This and That

The meeting began with a prayer from Jared Haugh which was followed by Pledge of Allegiance from Dan Selby who seemed a little eager to recite the Pledge in that he uttered the first verse before the rest of us could catch up. Ameren may move fast but we don't, Dan. Thanks for letting us catch up.

President Brian Koch thanked all of the Committee Chairmen who will be involved with his administration this year. There is still time to step up and join a committee. Contact Brian if you desire to do so.

Cory Watson conducted the Card Draw and Rick Veihl (what a surprise) had the right ticket thanks to Curt Moore grabbing the wrong set of tickets. He and Rick both bought $5 worth of tickets and both sets of tickets were on the table when Rick told Curt to take the one set he wanted. Wrong choice Curt. Never go up against the "Lucky Man". I think Emerson, Lake & Palmer sang a song about Veihl. By the way, Rick selected a King of Hearts so the pot of $204 grows next week. Can somebody explain to me how the pot can swell from $202 to $204 in one week? I'm confused.

Jeff Dorsey handled the duties as the Tail-Twister and fleeced the flock, allowing an exemption to Mike Lavery and Sonny Christner for their anniversaries. Both were advised to go to McDonalds and buy a $1 meal for their long time spouses as an anniversary gift. Dorsey's table tour included a Bill Clinton jogging joke. You had to be there.

Jared Haugh will accept additional golfers to play this Friday at Spring Lake. Contact Jared as soon as possible to confirm your involvement.

According to Chuck Venvertloh, we will meet at Quincy Senior High School on August 19th to tour the newly renovated facility.

Steve Green took the opportunity to run down some final numbers for this year's Gus Macker. Our revenue was down $1,000, but our expenses were down $5,000 so the final number ended up at plus $22,183. Great job again Steve and Perry Terwelp. Thanks for your hard work.

Words from the President

Elizabeth Grantham was installed as President of the National Exchange Club at the recent National Convention held in Houston, Texas last month.

Elizabeth is a member of the Isle of Palms and Cane Bay SC Exchange Clubs. She served as South Carolina District President in 2007-08 and was elected Region 10 Vice President in 2009. Grantham has served as the Board Chair of the Exchange Club Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse in Charleston, and is active in many civic organizations in the Charleston area.

Elizabeth is a retired elementary school teacher and presently works part-time in the Office of Professional Development at the College of Charleston. She and her husband Paul have 5 children and seven grandchildren.

As has become the custom, as National President, Elizabeth has recorded a video message for all Exchangites, which is available on the National Website. Knowing how often this group actually visits the National Website, here is a direct link.
