Our speaker this Friday will be Megan Schnur from Carthage Veterinary Services. Her topic will be animals, farming and food.
Friday Last

Sophie Marcola was our speaker. Sophie was the Illinois representative at the National Youth Leadership Council meeting held recently in Washington, D.C. Sophia earned the trip winning it through a contest sponsored by Adams Electrical Co-Operative. The convention featured 1700 youth from 44 different states. Sophie's first stop along the way was at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania followed by a five day stay in Washington. During her talk with the Club, Sophia, who will be a junior at Quincy Notre Dame High School this fall, delivered part of her speech that she gave in Washington, mostly my memory. This talented young lady is a cheerleader, soccer player and is the Secretary of the Junior class at QND. She volunteers tirelessly at many venues, a trait that has earned her the Governor's Volunteer Service Award in Illinois among other awards. She is actively involved with volunteering at the Illinois Veterans Home and keeps score during our Gus Macker Basketball Tournament as well. Her college plans are still unknown but she plans to become a Physician. Sophia's parents, Rich and Laura Marcola were also in attendance. Thanks to Bill Stalder, representing the Club and Adams Electrical Co-Operative, for his introduction of Sophia at last Friday's meeting.

This and That

It was an all Koch affair as President Brian Koch asked Dennis Koch to provide the prayer (which had reference for some sanity from our Presidential candidates). That was followed by the initiation of the Pledge of Allegiance from Joel Koch who bellowed out an "I" from just to the right of this humbled reporter.

Cory Watson conducted the Card Draw which finally saw the pot climb above the $200 mark. David Adam, who refused to gaze at the card he drew, selected a 6 of Spades. So the pot grows next week.

The Tail-Twisting duties landed in the lap of Steve Peters who collected a buck from everyone while telling a "Where do people come from?" joke. It was a joke you do not tell at home unless you live alone. But then if you live at home why would you tell it anyway?

A reminder that our annual Exchange Club Golf outing will be held after our meeting on August 12 at Spring Lake Country Club. This is for members and guests (prospective members) as well. Contact Jared Haugh for more information.

Our condolences to Jay Johnson and his family on the passing of his grandfather, Jim Johnson. Also, best wishes on her recovery from surgery to Betty Awerkamp, mother of Art and Ted and former first lady of the Quincy Exchange Club back in the day when husband Tom was club president.

We welcome to the Lincolnland District the Collegiate Exchange Club of Robert Morris University-Lake County in Waukegan. The new club was built Bill Froese, and was sponsored by the Exchange Clubs of Gurnee and Waukegan. The club chartered with 20 members on June 30, 2016. Past National President and Volunteer Field Representative Lou Molitor conducted the Permanent Organizational Meeting.

Line of the Week

Pretty reserved group Friday. Best line that I heard came from Art Awerkamp who, after buying just one ticket for a dollar for the Card Draw, said

 - "I should have spent $2 this week" after hearing the pot had swelled to $204

Down to Business

With the building of the Robert Morris Collegiate Exchange Club on June 30 and a high school Excel Club in Naperville earlier in the month of June, the time has come once again to look at complimentary clubs here in river city.

Initial contacts have been made at John Wood Community College and at Quincy High School to gauge interest from the students in those two institutions. All of the changes at QHS present both challenges and opportunities, so we'll see what happens.

To keep the organization viable, Exchange needs to grow, and building the high school and college clubs will help secure the future. In the mean time, however, traditional members need to fill the ranks once held by those who have passed on or left the club. Attrition happens - historically, we lose about one member a month, so we need to recruit at least a new member a month just to stay even. Recruitment is every member's job! Bring your friends, co-workers and relatives in! We have great projects and we can always use help on our fund-raisers. Whether it's our youth projects, Americanism, community service or child abuse prevention, there is something for everyone.

For those of you who have noticed, the website is getting a bit old (again). We will be updating the member areas, pictures and other pages soon. Please look at the information that is there - if it isn't current, let Dennis, Joel or Cullen know so that we can update the database. Newer members - we'll be getting some pictures to get your member info listed. A lot of folks in the club rely on the data here to get information to you - please help us keep it current!
