Jason McCoy was our speaker and he shared his experience in the military especially his time involved with his duty with Air Force One. Jason, a QHS grad, has a Business Management degree from Quincy University. He joined the Air Force after high school in 2001 and during basic training he and his fellow recruits were informed of the attacks on 9-11. His first assignment was at Travis Air Force Base in California and was eventually deployed to Kuwait in 2003 where he found himself dodging incoming missiles all while scheduling freight shipments to the area. He was eventually ordered to Turkey where he decided to study Islam and the history of the Middle East. He was eventually recommended for duty at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. to schedule flights in and out of the base including Air Force One and Air Force Two. A little known fact is at least 7 other aircraft fly along with Air Force One. He worked under Presidents Bush, Jr. and Obama. He was also in charge of scheduling flights at Andrews AFB for Heads of State, the CIA, FBI and other agencies. Jason currently is back in civilian life and works as a Logistics Coordinator scheduling production work for Knapheide Corporation in Quincy. He is married with 3 children and is the son of former Sheriff's Deputy Jon McCoy. Thanks to Doug Greenwell for his introduction of our speaker which included a wonderful quote from President Ronald Reagan.

This and That

Steve Green began the meeting with the Serenity Prayer which was followed by a 51 year old sounding "I" to begin the Pledge of Allegiance from birthday boy David Adam. Party must have worn him out.

Cory Watson conducted the card draw and Jim Lierly got the opportunity to win the pot worth "$199". Jim drew a 6 of Spades so the pot probably will jump way up to $199.99 this Friday.

Jared Haugh handled the Tail-Twisting duties with the exuberance of a man no longer saddled with the Presidency of the Club.

An apology goes out to Brian Musholt who we listed as being 47 years old when he is really 46. After a few hundred diaper changes he will feel like he's 47.

A reminder that our annual Exchange Club Golf outing will be held after our meeting on August 12 at Spring Lake Country Club. This is for members and guests (prospective members) as well. Look for sign-up sheets in the next few weeks.

Apologies for the day late bulletin. It happens when the editor is traveling!

Our large American Flag was a part of the opening ceremony for the Military All-Stars-Quincy Gems baseball game last Saturday night. Thanks to Dick Wentura for handling the logistics.

Jon McCoy, Republican candidate for Adams County Sheriff and father of our speaker, was the guest of Gary Farha.

Congratulations to Dennis Koch. While in Houston, Texas for the Exchange Club National Convention, Dennis won the award for the best District Bulletin representing the Lincolnland District. Dennis will have more details when he returns from the Lone Star State where he was seen on video tossing cow chips in a bar. Can't wait to hear this story!

Speaking of convention, Elizabeth Grantham from South Carolina was installed as the new National President and Phil Howard from Tennessee was elected President-Elect. Ray Carlson of California was elected to replace out-going NEC Foundation President Dennis Koch.

Exchange Minute

The National Convention

So, another convention has come and gone. This year, The Lincolnland contingent (including Dennis & Joel), racked up a few awards.

To start the convention off, at the opening entertainment - as noted by in This and That - Dennis was "selected" to participate in a cow chip throwing contest at Pappas BBQ.  6 "Contestants" were called up and offered their choice of a chip from a burlap bag. The first contestant came close, but Dennis hit the proverbial bull's eye. The other four promptly missed (like they knew what was coming) and Dennis was awarded the "Golden Cow Chip".

Once the convention got started, Joel was one of only three District Directors to earn the Distinguished District Award (along with Janet Jacobs from Naperville) and Dennis was awarded the "Edit" award for best district bulletin. Quincy and 18 other clubs from Lincolnland were recognized for earning the National Service Award and President Dawn Portner was recognized for building three clubs in the district.

To top off the convention, Lincolnland was awarded the Spirit Award during the celebration banquet. (first time since 2003)
