2014-15 Lincolnland District Best Bulletin Award Recipient

This Friday
Our guest this Friday will be Jason McCoy who will discuss his military career which included his involvement with Air Force One. This would be a good meeting to invite a prospective member.
Friday Last

The Brian Koch administration took over the Quincy Exchange Club following what was predicted by this humble reporter as one of the most moving swearing in ceremonies you will ever witness. Bob Hays was so moved he couldn't stay and left early. Unfortunately, several board members and club officers were not able to be there. For those in attendance, there were no dry eyes in the house Friday. President Brian Koch did announce some goals he would like to reach during his term. They included maintaining or growing membership, building a new Freedom Shrine and growing committee memberships. He also wants to establish a traveling trophy and find a better tail-twister bucket. My God, if only Hillary or Trump would think like this. We look for great things to come in the next few months. Where should we look?

Steve Green, the Chairman for the John Tripp Distinguished Service Award, presented the award to Chuck Venvertloh. Since there was only one ballot available and Chuck voted, it was obvious who the winner was going to be. Seriously, the award is given to the Club Member who has contributed over and above during his career as an Exchangite. Congratulations Chuck!

Art Awerkamp, the Chairman for the Bill Hageman Exchangite of the Year Award, presented the plague to Perry Terwelp. This award is given to the Club member who continually was involved in activities of the Club throughout the year. With Perry's involvement in Gus Macker and Special Olympics he was a well deserving choice. Congratulations Perry!

This and That

Dennis Koch, once he turned the microphone on, began the meeting and pronounced the prayer to the membership with thoughts to the families of the Dallas police officers who were slain.

Brian Koch (prior to being President) began the Pledge of Allegiance with an authoritative "I".

Dennis Koch thanked the Club for the flowers, thoughts and prayers that came to the Koch family after the loss of his and Brian's mother and Joel's grandmother last week

The Club did end up with a plus 3 for membership under the Haugh administration with 9 new members joining during the year. With the exception of maybe 2 members, they came once and never returned. You think Jared just took names from the phone book?

According to Dennis, who is our National Representative, the Club should be receiving the National Service Award at the National Convention thanks to our involvement in some 34 different service projects during the year.

The Lincolnland District lost one club (Bloomington) but did gain three others, a high school, collegiate and traditional club. The Next District Convention will be held in June of 2017 in Belleville.

In case you missed it last week here it is again. The new officers and board members are:

President: Brian Koch
President Elect (1st VP): Cory Watson
Vice President (2nd VP): Joel Koch
Treasurer: Chris Parker
Secretary: Cullan Duke
Immediate Past President: Jared Haugh
The board is as follows:
2014 to 2017 Josh Klitz and Cory Watson
2015 to 2018 Art Awerkamp and Kyle Awerkamp
2016 to 2019 Eric Thomas and Dave Poland

Cory Watson conducted the card draw and got off on the right foot when he drew Jeff Dorsey's ticket number. With the pot "still" under $200, Dorsey drew a Queen of Spades. It's ok, she was probably a drama queen anyway. So the pot will grow to under $200 next week I guess.

Bruce Broemmel handled the Tail-Twisting duties flawlessly until midway through his joke he realized the Terwelp family was still in the room. Ooops! Hard to change your punchline then!

Congratulations to Brian Musholt who became a dad again (aqe age 47) with the birth of a brand new baby boy last week.

Line of the Week

The line of the week belongs to Art Awerkamp who, while reading the list of previous winner's names for the Exchangite of the Year Award, said he would only read the list of names of those who were in the room and not those names of the previous winners who

 - "didn't care to show up or are dead"!

Exchange Minute

The National Convention

With the National Convention taking place in Houston this week, a little history might be appropriate.

For the past 33 years, the National Child Abuse Prevention Symposium has been held in conjunction with the convention. The Symposium begins on Tuesday and includes nationally known CAP speakers and seminars for center directors and staff from around the country. The cost of putting on the symposium, including scholarships to help offset the costs for the centers, comes from contributions to the NEC Foundation.

One of the highlights of the conventions are the hospitality rooms put on by the various districts. An award for best hospitality room is made during the celebration banquet on Saturday evening. Some districts are known for their drinks and food - shrimp at South Carolina, pizza at midnight in New England, Mudslides in Ohio - just to name a few. Last year, in Columbus, the Lincolnland District won best hospitality room using a theme based on the game and movie CLUE.

Historically, the opening entertainment, has been a huge highlight, with the Oak Ridge Boys, Circ du Sole, Rich Little and others. This year, a different twist with events at the Pappas BBQ, including a western-themed floor show will kick-off the event on Wednesday evening.

Hearing the National Youth of the Year and ACE Award winners bring stirring emotions on their stories, along with checks to each of the recipients in the amount of $10,000. This year, our own Dennis Koch, as President of the NEC Foundation, will make those presentations.

Finally, trading convention pins has always been a big deal at the conventions. It's interesting to see what kinds of designs everyone comes up with each year ton represent their district or club. (Lincolnland has a design that includes a fighter jet with Abe Lincoln as pilot to highlight both the fact that we are in Houston and our National President's military service in the Air Force).

Time was that Quincy would send a delegation to the National Convention (besides Dennis and Joel). Coming up are conventions in Jacksonville Florida in 2017, Reno Nevada in 2018, Norfolk Virginia in 2019 and Colorado Springs Colorado in 2020. Might be a location in there that you could attend!
