This Friday
The Brian Koch administration will take over the Quincy Exchange Club with one of the most moving swearing in ceremony you will ever witness. I guarantee there will not be a dry eye in the house Friday when the "I" Do's" are pronounced by the new officers and board members. Bring a "hanky".

Friday Last

There was no meeting last Friday to allow our membership ample opportunity to go purchase fireworks for the 4th of July. Meanwhile, there were reports that members of Rich Howell's table gathered early (as they do weekly), met at the Veterans Home last Friday and "squatted" for 3 days waiting for the fireworks display. They had a wonderful view of the fireworks. Thank goodness for that since none of them could hear the fireworks.

This and That

If we had held a meeting last Friday we would have had a prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Speaking of the Pledge of Allegiance, we recite it every week but do you know the history behind it?

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the socialist minister Francis Bellamy (1855-1931). It was originally published in The Youth's Companion on September 8, 1892. Bellamy had hoped that the pledge would be used by citizens in any country.
In its original form it read:

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. At this time it read:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy's daughter objected to this alteration. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Line of the Week

The line of the week belongs to a Redcoat soldier in the American Revolutionary War who was engaged in a conversation with British General Charles Cornwallis. "Well," snarled the tough old General Cornwallis to the bewildered soldier. "I suppose after you get discharged from the Army, you'll just be waiting for me to die so you can come and piss on my grave."

"Not me, General!" the soldier replied. "Once I get out of the Army, I'm never going to stand in line again!"

Exchange Minute

This date in History...July 4

Most everyone (a lot of Millennials not included) in the United States knows that the 4th of July - Independence Day - is celebrated to recognize the date that the Second Continental Congress proclaimed our independence from Britain (although the only signature on the Declaration that day was John Hancock, the president of the Congress).

Did you know, however, that there are a number of historical events that have happened on July 4th since that famous day?

In 1802, the U.S> Military Academy at West Point opened.

In 1826 - 50 years to the date of the Declaration, two of the authors of the document, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, both died.

In 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee withdrew from the bloodiest battle of the Civil War at Gettysburg, PA and the Garrison at Vicksburg, MS surrendered to U.S. General Ulysses S. Grant, marking the largest turn of events in the Union's favor during the rebellion between the states.

In 1884, The Statue of Liberty was presented to the United States in Paris.

In 1903 President teddy Roosevelt sent the first trans-Pacific telegraph from San Francisco to the Philippines.

In 1960, the 50 Star U.S> Flag was unfurled for the first time.

In 2004, the cornerstone of the 1776 ft tall Freedom Tower was laid on the site of the World Trade center in New York.
