It was Thomas Jefferson who composed most of the original draft of the Declaration of Independence which Congress, with the help of Rich Howell, would edit to produce the final version. The Declaration ultimately declared our independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. That wasn't the only declaration in that document. If you really read the fine print it says "The Quincy Exchange Club shall not assemble on July 1 in the year of two thousand and sixteen. And they shall reconvene on July 8 when they shall install a new President before the assembled membership. And that President shall be Sir Brian Koch. The assembled shall witness his swearing in ceremony beginning at 12:15 p.m." Boys those guys were (and are in Rich Howell's case) good!

We basically put the wraps on a wonderful year under the direction of President Jared Haugh. With no meeting on Friday, the baton will be passed on to incoming President Brian Koch at the July 8th meeting which will include the installation of officers. It will again be a very emotional swearing in ceremony (thank God for Animal House).
Jared's swan song included numerous pictures of his favorite target Rich Howell on the podium and also on the tables as well.
 In his final meeting as President, Jared, acting as a Tail-Twister, featured an Exchange Club Quiz that encompassed several activities that took place during his administration. Numerous names were featured or better yet, picked on.
Jared also thanked many who chaired events and those who went over and above on several projects as well. One such name mentioned was Rick Veihl who worked feverishly on the ill-fated Avenue of Lights (or Avenue of Darkness as Jared called it). As he was mentioning that, Chris Parker hauled out a Christmas tree from behind the podium and plugged it in to illuminate it in honor of Rick and everyone else who did their best to make that project go. Jared also auctioned off a few items including Rich Howell's Christmas sweater which went to a welcoming recipient in Dick Wentura. Per Rich's request, Dick Wentura also received the first ever "Silver Turd" award and Rich also got from Jared his own "Turd" for safe keeping. And who says we are nothing but a bunch of juveniles.

This and That

Jared Haugh provided the shortest prayer of the year which was followed by a pronounced "I" from Kelly Stupasky to initiate the Pledge of Allegiance.

The 50/50 Card Draw was conducted by Brian Koch and Lenny Biallas was in line to draw the Ace of Spades but drew a 3 of Hearts. So the pot nears or may go over the $200 mark on the 8th of July.
 
Under the direction of incoming President Brian Koch, the monthly board meetings will be held at a new location and on a different day as well. Beginning with the July 19 meeting, we will meet at Riverside Smoke House and will assemble every 3rd Tuesday of the month. The times will remain at 11:45am and the cost is only $10 for lunch.

A reminder again, if you have not paid your dues to please take care of that as soon as possible.

Congratulations to WGEM-TV General Manager and Club member Carlos Fernandez on receiving eight Iowa Broadcaster's Association and seven Missouri Broadcaster's Association Awards. It is good to see hard work getting rewarded!   Congrats Carlos to you and your staff!

It looks like August 12 will be the date of this year's golf outing. So mark your calendars.

Thoughts and prayers go out to two families. First, the Rich Zeidler family lost Rich's twin brother who passed away in St. Louis last week. Secondly, God's speed to David Musholt, the son of Alan Musholt, who received deployment orders to the Middle East.

Exchange Minute

On July 4, 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States. Each year on July 4th, also known as Independence Day, Americans celebrate this historic event.
Conflict between the colonies and England was already a year old when the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in the summer of 1776. In a June 7 session in the Pennsylvania State House (later Independence Hall), Richard Henry Lee of Virginia presented a resolution with the famous words: "Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved."
Lee's words were the impetus for the drafting of a formal Declaration of Independence, although the resolution was not followed up on immediately. On June 11, consideration of the resolution was postponed by a vote of seven colonies to five, with New York abstaining. However, a Committee of Five was appointed to draft a statement presenting to the world the colonies' case for independence. Members of the Committee included John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Robert R. Livingston of New York and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia. The task of drafting the actual document fell on Jefferson.
On July 1, 1776, the Continental Congress reconvened, and on the following day, the Lee Resolution for independence was adopted by 12 of the 13 colonies, New York not voting. Discussions of Jefferson's Declaration of Independence resulted in some minor changes, but the spirit of the document was unchanged. The process of revision continued through all of July 3 and into the late afternoon of July 4, when the Declaration was officially adopted. Of the 13 colonies, nine voted in favor of the Declaration, two -- Pennsylvania and South Carolina -- voted No, Delaware was undecided and New York abstained. John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence. It is said that John Hancock's signed his name "with a great flourish" so England's "King George can read that without spectacles!"
Today, the original copy of the Declaration is housed in the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and July 4 has been designated a national holiday to commemorate the day the United States laid down its claim to be a free and independent nation.
