This Friday
This Friday will be the final meeting under the Jared Haugh administration (And the crowd goes crazy...just kidding). The topic of the meeting is "The Sights and Sounds of Jared Haugh from the President's Chair". In other words he won't be at the meeting. But then again he very well may show up. You will just have to show up yourself to find out if Jared is a no show or not...

We held our annual Flag Day program as we honored those who have established a patriotic flag display at their place of business or residence. Dennis Koch is the Chairman for this event and he made several presentations to the local owners of these displays. The winners in the Business category included Mid-Illinois Bank, represented by John Johannes, The Kroc Center, represented by Gary Dowell and Richards Electric, represented by Jim Keller. The private citizen winners were Butch & Diane Hageman, represented by Diane Hageman, Mike Smith and Beth Young. All recipients presented their reasons for why they flew the American Flag. All six winners were presented a plaque and an American Flag as well. A special thanks goes to Joel Koch for his assistance with this wonderful program.

This and That

President Jared Haugh initiated the meeting with a patriotic flag mentioning prayer which was followed by a hardy "I" from Cullan Duke to begin the Pledge of Allegiance.

As a President's term comes to a close the desire to award money must diminish as well as Jared forgot to bring the 50-50 tickets and bucket so the pot will remain the same for next week (I hope he hasn't forgotten to close a casket this week).

President Haugh reminded the "dead beats", as he called them, to please pay your dues as soon as possible as it is now due.

He also congratulated Dick Wentura on his anniversary to which Dick took the opportunity to testify to his 65 years of involvement in the Exchange Club. Dick was sponsored by Tom Awerkamp. Art, it is your family blood that is to blame here.

Speaking of Art, he took the opportunity to inform the Club that 210 flags were set up and taken down for Flag Day through our Flags of Honor program. Thanks to the QHS Football team for their assistance with the operation. The proceeds from this program will go to Veteran's programs

Dennis Koch announced that the Club took home some awards from the recent District Convention. The Club has received the National Service Award, District 5A's Award and had the best net numerical increase in membership in the district.

The Tail-Twister duties belonged to Bruce Broemmel last Friday and despite not having a bucket managed to collect a dollar from almost all (his table was exempt) by using a baseball cap to accumulate dollars.

With a sparse crowd in attendance we passed out (wrong choice of words) American Flags to those who braved the near 100 degree temperatures at Madison Park last Wednesday as the Quincy Park Band performed. That event was preceded by our annual Flag Day cookout at Madison Park Shelter House. Members enjoyed Butcher Block food off the grill and shaved ice from Gengenbacher Shaved Ice. Thanks to Rick Gengenbacher for chairing this event.

Congratulations to Eric Barnes who was named Transportation Services Department Manager at Klingner & Associated P.C. Congrats on your promotion Eric.

A short Board Meeting was held after the meeting to approve the re-location and dates of the meetings under the direction of incoming President Brian Koch beginning with the July 19 meeting. The meetings will be moving from The Pier to Riverside Smoke House and will move from the 3rd Thursday of the month to the 3rd Tuesday of the month. The times will remain at 11:45 and the cost will still be $10 if you desire a meal.

For those wondering, we will not hold a meeting on Friday, July 1, as many will be gone for the Independence Day (4th of July for you young guys) holiday.

Line of the Week

There were several lines last Friday, so here goes.

Line one goes to Jared Haugh, after announcing a new amendment to the National Exchange Club's Constitution, who said "that amendment is going to LaGrange to the dump".

Line two goes to Bob Hays who, after hearing President Haugh mention the name of Betsy Ross, said "I think Rich Howell dated her".

And lastly, after telling everyone about our award winner Beth Young's ability to play taps, Dennis Koch provided further information regarding how she was his librarian in school. He continued on getting deeper into trouble regarding how many years ago that was when Jeff Dorsey chimed in with "Be careful Dennis or she will be playing Taps for you next".

Exchange Minute

As the Haugh Administration winds down, it's time to look back at the highs and lows of the past year.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Good: Many good things happened during the past year. As noted in "This and That", the club received the National Service Award and District 5A's award. These are presented to Exchange Clubs that fulfill their responsibility to their communities in the form of service projects.

While we rarely toot our own horns, here is a list of the service projects completed by our club this past year:

Americanism
1,000 flag Field of Honor and our Flags of Honor program, We carried the American Flag in the Veteran's Day and Dogwood parades and distributed flags at both the Dogwood parade and the Flag Day concert in the park. We helped house homeless veterans and recognized our own vets with a One Nation Under God Program. Finally, this week's Proudly We Hail program.

Community Service
The Adopt-a-Grandparent program matches 6th graders at St. Dominic School and the Illinois Veterans Home.  e recognized our Law Officer and Firefighter of the Year, presented the Book of Golden Deeds, sponsored the Special Olympics basketball tournament and hosted the State of the City address and Arts Awards.

Youth Activities
6 Youth of the Months, 11 Charachter Champions (along with the Character Champions seminar), a Bud Willer ACE Award and Youth of the Year highlight our Youth Program, along with the annual Hearing Impaired Christmas Program.

Child Abuse Prevention
Give-a-Kid-a-Chance Christmas, Time-Out Teddy and significant contributions to local CAP charities.

Fundraising
Yet another successful Gus Macker and our Flags of Honor program.

The Bad: Avenue of Lights ('nuff said)

and The Ugly: There's always Rich Howell
