We will get a review of the recent 2016 Tri-State Pro-Am Golf Tournament held at Spring Lake Country Club as Chairman Greg Feldberg will be our speaker. Greg will share with the club some of the preparation that went in to pulling off this major event that featured several PGA Tour golfers who participated.

We got the latest on the 2016 edition of the Quincy Gems as Gems owner and Club member Jimmy Louthen and Coach Zach Getsee addressed the membership at the Elks Lodge. There is talent throughout this team including local players from QND, QU., JWCC and WIU on the squad. The players have come to play in Quincy from New York to California and from Louisiana to Wisconsin. The ballpark, built in 1938, has changed dramatically as well with a new concession stand and permanent bathroom facilities being built. The right field foul area now has batting cages as well. The prospect league also has some changes with the 2016 season in that the Lafayette, Indiana Aviators and DuPage, Illinois drones are new teams added to the league. There are 31 home games for the Gems including special fireworks nights on July 3 and 4. If you can only make one game, make it the game on July 16 for Military Appreciation Night. That night the Gems will play the Military All-Stars at Q.U. Stadium. Thanks to David Adam for his introduction of our speaker.

This and That
Vice President Brian Koch handled the meeting in President Jared Haugh's absence.

Mike Lavery began the meeting with the opening prayer and included a special thought for our brother Kevin O'Donnell who passed away last week. Kevin will be missed by all (see Obituary below).

Cory Watson delivered the "I" to start the Pledge of Allegiance and I didn't have to hold old glory this week during the recital.

Steve Green informed the Club on Gus Macker that there were 382 teams that played. The event was worked by 61 members (approximately 2/3 of the membership) including 28 member scorekeepers. Steve thanked his assistant Perry Terwelp for his hard work along with Rick Gengenbacher for lining up the officials. He also thanked Dennis Koch for handling the registration tent, Dave Poland for running the bracket tent, Jim Schlepphorst for signage needed, Doug Greenwell and Chuck Venvertloh for hospitality, Eric Barnes and Kirk Frageman for court taping, Steve Wellman and Gary Hillebrenner and Bill Awerkamp for the set-up work, Vic Wellman for the 35 court sponsorships and Mike Lavery for the major sponsors for the event.

Steve thanked everyone involved but a special thanks needs to go to Steve Green for his excellent work in handling the 26th edition of the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament. Thanks Steve!

The 50-50 card draw was held courtesy of Joel Koch. The pot worth $200 increased after Sonny Christner drew the Ace of Hearts.

Steve Peters somewhat handled the Tail-Twister duties last Friday. While he told an airplane pilot joke (or was it a lesbian joke?), Carlos Fernandez helped him by collecting money. It was a collaborative effort by the two. Does that make them Tail-twisters or Tales-twister or lesbians? Had to be there!

We had some special guests with us including Dave Macdonna, the Public Information Officer for the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs. Dave was the guest of Rick Gengenbacher. Also in attendance was Quincy Gems Assistant Coach Alex Kazierski, a guest of our speaker and member Jimmy Louthen.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Bruce Broemmel and his family. Bruce is visiting his ailing brother in Michigan who is suffering from cancer.

The Exchange Club mourns the loss of Kevin O'Donnell, age 63, of Quincy who died on Sunday, May 29, 2016 in his home. He was born on October 19, 1952 in Quincy. Kevin was a long-time and active member and supporter of the Quincy Exchange Club and its work. THREE BROTHERS: Rick O'Donnell, Dan O'Donnell, and Kelly O'Donnell.
ONE SISTER: Cathy Becks

Exchange Minute

Lincolnland District Convention this week

Every Exchange Club is included in a District. Over the 104 years that Exchange has been around, the names and the geography has changed - Quincy has been in the Illinois State District, the Illinois-Southern Wisconsin District, the Southern Illinois-Eastern Missouri District and now the Lincolnland District. For the past 89 years, representatives of the clubs included in those clubs have gathered at the annual district convention to vote on changes to the bylaws, elect officers, recognize our youth and award winners and renew friendships.

Through the years, many Quincy Exchangites have served as officers and directors of the district - Dennis Koch, Max Johnson, Craig Shaeffer and J.J. Tisdale have all served as District Presidents and Loren Cox served as a District Governor prior to that. Numerous Quincians have served as officers and board members, incluing Tom Awerkamp, Dick Beasley, George Baltzer, S.T. Longoria, Tom Klitz, Fred Lauder, and our current director, Joel Koch.

This weekend, the 90th District Convention will be held in St. Charles, Illinois at the Pheasant Run Resort. The weekend includes golf, meals, business meetings and elections, educational sessions and recognizing both volunteers and a couple of very special students and A.C.E. and Youth of the Year Award winners.

I can tell you from experience that a lot of planning and hard work goes into carrying off a district convention. Many things have changed over the years - not as meany members show up for convention any more - but the fun and camaraderie are still there to be found.

As with most groups, service clubs are not as popular as they once were and the membership is getting older. The Quincy club has long fought the trend as our average age has held up comparatively well - for whatever reason, though we don't get the participation at district events that we used to get.

There was a time when we would have a busload of folks go to a district convention or golf outing. Maybe it's time to start thinking in bigger terms again? Just something to think about as we come to the end of another year.
