This Friday

We'll be back in the "friendly confines" of the Elks Club this week and its Quincy Gems Baseball season. We will get an update from Gems owner Jimmy Louthen this Friday. The ball park has many new additions and the team is ready for a great season. Jimmy will provide details. Good meeting to bring a friend.

Put Gus Macker 26 in the books! Nice job by all involved especially Steve Green and Perry Terwelp who chaired the event once again this year. They will give special thanks to others who worked over and above to make Macker another successful event in the weeks ahead once the numbers are in. It is such a huge undertaking every year and the membership stepped up once again to make it happen. Last Friday Steve took the opportunity to give some final information out during our lunch at Washington Park which was catered by The Butcher Block. Remember, without the vision of Mike Lavery 27 years ago to bring the idea to our Club, the Macker wouldn't be so thanks Mike for all you have done to make Macker what it is today. Mr. Macker himself, Scott McNeal, also provided some comments about the tournament. His visit to Quincy included a visit from one of the Illinois State Police Troopers near Marblehead. Apparently, Mr. Macker not only can drive to the basket but he can drive pretty fast too!

So Proudly We Hail

Last Chance! - The So Proudly We Hail program is coming up on Friday, June 17. Once again, we will honor 6 Quincy residences/businesses with a plaque recognizing there proper flying of our nation's flag. We could still use a couple names that can attend the meeting on June 17. Please let Dennis or Joel know this week!

This and That

Jared Haugh began the meeting with the opening prayer that included a prayer for the small amount of "idiot parents of Macker players" to behave themselves.

I didn't catch who was responsible to deliver the "I" to start the Pledge of Allegiance. I was too busy holding the flag for a second consecutive week in a strong wind I might add.

President Jared Haugh took the opportunity to thank Bill Awerkamp for his assistance as he has done for 26 years with installing the baskets needed for Macker.

Steve Green informed the Club that 382 teams signed up to play in Gus Macker this year and passed out packets needed for the scorekeepers for the weekend.

Art Awerkamp announced that we now have 193 individuals signed up for flags for the Flags of Honor program. That number is 73 more than last year. Thanks to Gary Farha for his salesmanship on this project and to the QHS football players for assisting us with the set-up and take down of the flags on the four holidays coming up beginning this Monday.

There was no 50-50 card draw of Tail-Twister last Friday.

Sorry to report that word came over the weekend on the passing of past club president Kevin O'Donnell. As of this writing on Monday evening, no arrangements were available. An email will be sent once we have some additional information. (My apologies to Kevin Curran, who is still alive and kicking in Northern Illinois)

Lines of the Week

#1 Goes to Skip Rueter who, after seeing me hold the flag above my head, said we need a slimmer flag pole (most of you didn't hear that comment).

#2 Goes to Art Awerkamp who said we have 193 flags to install and almost everyone has paid. Those who don't will get an ISIS Flag in their yard.

#3 Goes to Jared Haugh who forgot the birthday list and asked "Does anyone have a birthday?" With no reply from the membership, Jared followed with "You all have birthday you dummies!"

Exchange Minute

Another Macker in the Books

Macker 26 is now history - the baskets are on their way to the next tournament, the tape has been pulled from the streets and "Mackerville" has pretty much been restored to Washington Park.

Kudos to everyone who helped make the weekend a success! Registration went smoothly (in spite of the usual handful of ringers trying to get in). and the complaints from the courts were about normal. (Seriously, you would think they were playing Game 7 of the NBA Championship instead of street ball for a plastic trophy!)

Steve Green and his subcommittee chairs will be making their thank-yous and reporting on the funds raised in the coming weeks, but a big thank you goes out to the spouses and members' children that helped out in the Registration tent and on the courts, as well as a big thank you to the QND football team that provided the manual labor all weekend. Without their help, it would have made a long weekend even longer.

Finally, prayers and best wishes to our past Macker foreman and friend of the club, Tony Wysinger. Tony has been diagnosed with double kidney failure and is awaiting a transplant - our thoughts are with him and his wife Kim as he deals with his medical issues.
