This Friday
2010 Macker
It is Gus Macker weekend and we will meet at the site of the event...Washington Park. Twenty-six years ago Mike Lavery brought the idea of holding a Gus Macker Tournament in Quincy. Once presented the idea was questioned by some and accepted by others. We all know how it has turned out and what a money maker it has been for the Club over the past 25 years. Nice call Mike! We will get the final word on this year's Macker in the park Friday.

Friday Last

The Exchange Club got to check out the work in progress renovation of historic Washington Theatre last Friday. A lot has been accomplished in the past few years to try and bring this beautiful theatre back to life. The theatre's original name was The Washington Square Theater. The theatre opened on June 19, 1924 with over 5000 patrons attending several shows that were held on that day. Those shows were basically vaudeville acts and the music of a pipe organ which is still operable but being kept elsewhere for preservation with hopes of it returning to the theatre someday. In 2000, The City of Quincy acquired the theatre and formed a Redevelopment Commission which is currently headed by Adam Duesterhaus who was our speaker. According to Adam the goal is to make the theatre operational but money is needed to support the renovation plans. It is estimated that some 3 to 5 million dollars will be needed to cover the costs involved. Adam was assisted by Paul Denkla and Jim Lawrence who are members of the Friends of Washington Theatre group. That organization was presented a check from the Exchange Club for $250. After the presentation, a tour of the building was also given. Thanks to Carlos Fernandez for handling the introduction of our guests.

So Proudly We Hail

The So Proudly We Hail program is coming up on Friday, June 17. Once again, we will honor 6 Quincy residences/businesses with a plaque recognizing there proper flying of our nation's flag.

If you know of neighbors or businesses who properly fly the flag on a daily basis, please contact Dennis Koch so that we can get the invitations sent to the folks for the June 17th program.

If they are available, we will also honor area Military Academy graduates with a flag that has flown over the capitol as well.

This and That

Jared Haugh presented the opening prayer to begin the meeting.

Dave Grimm followed with an echo sounding "I" to start the Pledge of Allegiance which was aided by Jeff Dorsey's flag holding. It was difficult holding that massive of a flag by oneself, but I managed.

President Jared Haugh updated everyone to be a part a Gus Macker in any way you can to help out. He also held a first reading for membership for new Sheriff Brian Vonderhaar.

Steve Green informed the Club that 381 teams signed up to play in Gus Macker this year which is about where the total has been for the past few years. Almost all of the sponsor money is in already so what is left for us to do is put the event on. If you are scorekeeping, please report to the park by 7:30 Saturday.

Vic Welper announced that we have 34 paid court sponsors, 6 trade sponsors with 21 members selling courts this year and approaching 150 businesses along the way.

Dennis Koch will be needing help after the meeting Friday with pre-registration from 1:30 to 7 pm in the park and then again from 7-11 on Saturday morning.

Rick Gengenbacher said we are a "go" with all the registered court officials as well.

Dave Poland could use a couple of guys to help with the brackets during the Macker.

Art Awerkamp announced that we have 150 individuals signed up for flags for the Flags of Honor program. That number is 30 more than last year. Thanks to the QHS football players for assisting us with the set-up and take down of the flags on the four holidays coming up beginning this Monday.

A reminder that the 90th Lincolnland District Convention will be held at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois on June 9 thru 12. Representing the Club at the Convention will be Dennis and Joel Koch. In case you are unaware, Dennis is our Club's National representative and Joel Koch is our Club's District 10 representative.

There was no 50-50 card draw of Tail-Twister last Friday.

Line of the Week

Goes to Jeff Dorsey (Twice) who said, after Steve Green commented about the amount of beef Rich Lavery had, "yeah, but what about the beef on his plate?"

Earlier, after President Haugh failed to mention the name of the new Sheriff , he was questioned as to what his name was other than Sheriff. Jared replied

 - "his name is Bad Ass just like me".

To which Jeff Dorsey responded

 - "No, you're Fat Ass".

Guess I was on a roll...or did I eat it?

Exchange Minute

Planning for Next Year

Incoming President, Brian Koch has announced that his planning meeting will take place on May 31 at 5:30 p.m. at brother Dennis' office located at 1706 N 16th Street.

The purpose of this meeting is to set the agenda for the coming year. That includes settling on a budget, making decisions on fund raisers and projects and finalizing plans for board meeting times, dates and places.

Every board member and officer is asked to attend the meeting, but it is open to any member.

The board did vote at the last meeting to stay at the Elks for the next year and to change the board meetings back to the second Monday of the month. The location of the board meetings will be decided at the Planning Meeting, as an alternative to the Pier is being looked at.

The District and National conventions are also just around the corner. The Lincolnland District Convention, set for June 9-12 in St Charles Illinois will see new officers and Division directors (even numbered divisions) elected. There are no changes to the bylaws to be voted on. At the National Convention in Houston (July 13-16), National and Foundation Board members and officers will be elected and there are several bylaws amendments on the agenda for membership consideration.

Conventions are what you make of them, but, after attending about 14 or 15 of them, I can tell you that I have made friends from all over the country and made many worthwhile contacts that would not have been possible without Exchange.

Think about attending a convention for the fun, the training or just to see what the national club is about. In addition to this year's convention in Houston, the 2017 National Convention will be in Jacksonville Florida and the 2018 convention is scheduled for Reno Nevada.

A location for the 2017 Lincolnland convention will be determined next month in St Charles.
