2014-15 Lincolnland District Best Bulletin Award Recipient

This Friday
We will take a road trip to The Washington Theatre on Hampshire Street. The renovation of the theatre has been an ongoing process and we will get a first-hand look at the progress that has been made. This would be another good chance to bring a prospective member as a guest.
Friday Last

Last Friday we presented the 64th Golden Deeds Award to Jack Mackenzie, a dedicated volunteer, who gives endless hours of his time and talents toward making our community a better place to live.
Mackenzie has served the community as a teacher, coach and mentor to many. Mackenzie spent 43 seasons as the head coach of the Quincy University Hawks and with 513 career victories ranks 10th all-time in wins in NCAA history and third at the Division II level.

Mackenzie, the winner of nine NAIA National Championships, was inducted into the St. Louis Players Hall of Fame in 1997. In 1989, he was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame, and in 1979, was named to the Quincy University Sports Hall of Fame.

In his career, Mackenzie coached 31 All-Americans. He is a four-time NAIA Coach of the Year, winning in 1971, 1975, 1977 and 1981. In addition, he was named the Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association in 1974 and the Metropolitan Life Insurance's Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 1987. Not to be forgotten is his focus on his players being a positive student athlete.
In his "retirement", Jack has continued to help the Q.U. soccer program and has also been active with Special Olympics as well. He also helps to deliver meals to those who need them. Mackenzie is a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and volunteers at numerous places including Blessed Sacrament Parish's Quincy Spirit Group.
The Book of Golden Deeds is the National Exchange Club's longest running project, dating back to the first award, sponsored by the Exchange Club of Huntington, Indiana in 1919. Friday's presentation by the Quincy Exchange Club made Mackenzie the 64th recipient of the prestigious award.

Jack and his wife, Sharon, have six children.... Scott, Chris, Kevin, Beth, Brian and Megan. Scott, Chris & his wife Leigh and Beth and her husband Chad were in attendance. Brian, Kevin and Megan were unable to attend.
Thanks to the Chairman for the event, Cullan Duke, who introduced this year's recipient. Thanks to Cullan along with the committee members Rick Gengenbacher, Gary Farha, David Adam, and Art Awerkamp for their work in putting on a wonderful program. Thanks also goes out to Gary Peters for being the MC and to Jared Haugh for delivering the keynote speech about Jack Mackenzie, a speech that somehow included a shot at Rich Howell.

So Proudly We Hail

The So Proudly We Hail program is coming up on Friday, June 17. Once again, we will honor 6 Quincy residences/businesses with a plaque recognizing there proper flying of our nation's flag.

If you know of neighbors or businesses who properly fly the flag on a daily basis, please contact Dennis Koch so that we can get the invitations sent to the folks for the June 17th program.

If they are available, we will also honor area Military Academy graduates with a flag that has flown over the capitol as well.

Exchange Minute

Macker set-up starts this weekend!

Macker man
Macker 26 is now upon us!

If you have outstanding court sponsorships, get them to Vic Welper, get them to him this week. If they are a new sponsor, he needs to have a banner made. If they are a returning sponsor, he needs to get the banner pulled. Either way, you need to get him the sponsor and check this week.

This Sunday, May 22nd, we'll tape the courts around Washington Park. Kirk and Eric will need help getting that tape down (weather permitting). A couple of the regular tapers will be out of town this weekend and it's also QND's graduation, so some new blood is needed to help lay it down. It's not difficult and many hands makes the work go relatively quick. Meet at Washington Park at 8 a.m.

On Friday and Saturday of the event, Dennis Koch will need help in the Registration Tent. Registration goes from 1:30 to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. There is always a crush of teams waiting to register on Saturday morning before their first game so we could really use some additional help Saturday morning. Dennis will have sign-up sheets this Friday. They can't play the games until we get them measured and registered!

Finally, Scorekeepers are needed on Saturday and Sunday. Steve Green is making the rounds to get those lined up.

This is our largest fund-raising event of the year and pays for all of the scholarships and donations we make throughout the year - we need each member to step up and contribute to the effort to make the Macker the best one yet!

One of the newer clubs in the Lincolnland District - the Exchange Club of Zion, is contemplating adding Macker as a fund raiser, so they may send a couple of folks down to check us out that weekend.
