This Friday
Dr. Lenny Biallas will present what has now become an annual tradition....The Kentucky Derby. Several races will be shown with Club members getting a chance to root their favorite horses on to victories. It is a fun meeting and one you may want to bring a guest to on Friday.
Friday Last

We had to bring out the tarp and cover the meeting as Brigham John and Chris Martin, the baseball coaches of Quincy Senior High and Quincy Notre Dame High School were both unavailable due to scheduling conflicts. So pinch hitting was Bret Austin of Austin Properties to be our speaker. Bret led off with comments about all the activities The District was involved in with the recent Dogwood Festival. He then ran down some of the upcoming events including the Farmer's Market, Blues in the District, Christmas light enhancement plans and in August the Feast on Fifth event. He also mentioned that the downtown area currently has a 93% occupancy rate for first floor commercial and unfortunately only less than 20% occupancy rate for the downtown's entire square footage. That is something he and The District are working to improve. Bret's lovely wife Joi was also in attendance.

Bud Willer A.C.E. Award
Ian Mahaffy, Quincy High School

Judie, Ian and John Mahaffy
Also during the meeting the Bud Willer A.C.E. $1,000 Scholarship Award was presented to Ian Mahaffy of Quincy Senior High School. Ian, the son of Judie and John Mehaffy, found out at age 11 that he had Cystic Fibrosis, a life threatening disorder affecting his lungs and digestive system. Then 8 weeks later he was diagnosed as a Type One Diabetic. Through it all, Ian has remained positive and even with his absences and medical issues he carries a 3.5330 GPA. He is active in school activities and is the stage manager for many of the school musical and
theater productions. He plans on attending St. Louis University in the fall and will major in Biology. Also attending with Ian, aside from his parents, were QHS Principal Danielle Edgar and Counselor Chad Struck. Thanks to Mike Llewellyn for the introduction of Ian and to John Johannes for chairing this wonderful event and for providing a background on the award.

For members who were not there Friday, the Bud Willer A.C.E. Award is a National Exchange Club Program which stands for Accepting the Challenge of Excellence. This program recognizes high school students who have made a dramatic change in their attitude and performance during their high school years. These changes have enabled the students to overcome adversities and prepare for graduation. Locally, the award is named after former club member Bud Willer who, after playing football in the 1940's at the University of Iowa, came back to Quincy and began working at the Department of Rehabilitation. After seeing some of his students overcome adversity he brought the idea to the club and it has been an annual award presentation every year since the early 1970's.

This and That

President Jared Haugh provided the opening prayer with new Adams County Sheriff Brian Vonderhaar beginning the Pledge of Allegiance with a very "I mean business" sounding "I" .

Bruce Broemmel handled the Tail-Twisting duties and garnered an additional buck from Rich Zeidler for being "stupid" and from Gary Farha for "sucking-up" to him prior to the meeting to get off easy.

Thanks to Rick Veihl, the pot went back to $200 after Rick took home $534 last week by drawing the Ace of Spades. To his credit, he turned the money over to his wife, Tina, for "safe handling". For most Club members, the wife would never have found out about it.

Steve Green presented the Macker update and revealed we now have 54 teams signed up. Steve has been going around asking members about their availability to help as scorekeepers for the two days of Macker.

Vic Welper mentioned we have 20 court sponsors sold. Your help in selling the $300 court sponsorships is still needed. We need to sell about 12 more.

Art Awerkamp told the Club that the Flags of Honor program has acquired 15 new subscribers. He will be starting a "What's With the Flags" campaign to bring awareness to it with a display of flags at 24th and Broadway. For those who don't know, for $30 you can have an American Flag placed in your yard in the morning and taken down in the evening on four different holidays.... Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. Plus your name will be a part of the Field of Honor event around Veteran's Day in November. This is an easy sale so ask your neighbors if they would like to sign up.

Thanks to all of the Club members who walked in the Dogwood Festival Parade on Saturday handing out American Flags. Thanks to Dave Poland for handling this project.

The Golden Deeds Committee has reviewed the submitted entries and has selected Coach Jack Mackenzie to be the recipient of the 64th Annual Book of Golden Deeds. Jack has had a rich history of coaching soccer at Quincy University and has been heavily involved with Special Olympics was well. The Golden Deeds Awards Luncheon will be held on May 13th.

The 90th Convention of the Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs will be held in St. Charles, Illinois June 9 thru June 12. Time is running out to sign up to attend this event which will be held at Pheasant Run Resort. If interested in going, hotel reservations need to be made by May 10th. For more information, contact Joel Koch.

Special guests last Friday were prospective member Sheriff Brian Vonderhaar and Gary Sparks, both invited by Gary Farha.

Time to step up up!

Macker 2012
Gus Macker is right around the corner and that means we'll need lots of manpower in the coming weeks.

Between now and the Memorial Day Weekend, we need to sell at least 12 more court sponsorships. Those go for $300 each and the price hasn't gone up since the beginning of this project 26 years ago. If you haven't done so already, check with your employer about making a sponsorship (If you are the employer, well, what are you waiting for?)

Once we get closer to the weekend, we'll need help taping the courts. Eric Barnes will need help from members on Sunday, May 22 (weather permitting) to get the courts laid out. It's not tough work and many hands make the job go quickly.

On Friday and Saturday of the event, Dennis Koch will need help in the Registration Tent. Registration goes from 1:30 to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. There is always a crush of teams waiting to register on Saturday morning before their first game so we could really use some additional help Saturday morning.

Finally, Scorekeepers are needed on Saturday and Sunday. Steve Green is making the rounds to get those lined up.

This is our largest fund-raising event of the year and pays for all of the scholarships and donations we make throughout the year - we need each member to step up and contribute to the effort to make the Macker the best one yet!

So Proudly We Hail

The So Proudly We Hail program is coming up on Friday, June 17. Once again, we will honor 6 Quincy residences/businesses with a plaque recognizing there proper flying of our nation's flag.

If you know of neighbors or businesses who properly fly the flag on a daily basis, please contact Dennis Koch so that we can get the invitations sent to the folks for the June 17th program.

If they are available, we will also honor area Military Academy graduates with a flag that has flown over the capitol as well.
