This Friday
Character Champions
Let's try this again! It is a Character Champions meeting this Friday as we welcome those student athletes who excel in the classroom, on the field and in life showing compassion and sportsmanship in all they do. We look forward to meeting the winners from the area schools

Our speaker was Joel Murphy, along with educators Carol Frericks and Julie Steratman of the Quincy Public Schools.  Mr. Murphy presented the timetable for all of the new school projects coming in the next few years.  Mr. Murphy revealed that the construction project at Quincy Senior High School, including 24 new classrooms and an expanded P.E. area, will be completed by this August. He also mentioned that the expansion was needed in that the 9th graders will now be attending the Senior High School. The Quincy Junior High School, while losing 9th graders, will be absorbing 6th graders from the various elementary schools this fall. Baldwin School will be the home for 4th and 5th graders as well.  The new Monroe School is planned to be open in the fall of 2017.  The new, yet to be named, elementary school on the current ADM site should open its doors in the fall of 2018. Once that school opens, the plan is for three new elementary schools to open one year at a time through 2021. Those sites are yet to be determined.  The Early Childhood & Family Center will remain open as is.  Thanks to Eric Barnes for his introduction of our speakers.

Youth of the Year

Also during the meeting the Winner of the Youth of the Year Award was announced. This year's recipient is Madison Kim of Quincy Senior High School. Madison was our Youth of the Month recipient in November. Madison wins a $1000 scholarship from the Quincy Exchange Club and will be the Club's representative in the District competition. She has been involved in numerous activities including the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Orchestra and she is also the Captain of the QHS Tennis team. She has worked in food pantries, supported CASA and has traveled to Guatemala to help build a school there. Her plans are to attend the University of Missouri and major in Business and Behavioral Science. This and That

Jared Haugh began the proceedings with a prayer. That was followed by Steve Wellman's "thunderous "I' to initiate the Pledge of Allegiance. Spoken like a man with a true green thumb.

President Jared Haugh congratulated Kristen Gengenbacher, daughter of Rick and Becky Gengenbacher on her being selected for the National Volleyball Team tryouts for the Olympics. OMG, we may have an Olympic Dad in the Club. Good luck Kristen!

Jared also mentioned that we have received a resignation letter from long time member Les Sachs.

It was also mentioned by Jared that we will be holding our Flag Day picnic on June 15 at Madison Park. After we eat, we will then pass out flags to the audience for the Flag Day performance by the Quincy Park Band.

The Tail-Twisting duties were conducted by Bruce Broemmel who told a joke involving something about "4 hours". If you weren't there, you can figure it out on your own.

The 50-50 Card Draw, worth $500 was held. With the deck now down to 30 cards Daren Duke thinned the deck even more when he drew an 8 of Diamonds.  So the pot grows some more with 29 cards in the deck. See how my public school upbringing is working? Thanks to Brian for conducting the card draw.

Steve Green presented the Macker update and revealed we now have 18 teams signed up. We are anticipating some 400 teams again. Steve posted some Macker signup information on Facebook. For those on Facebook, please find it and share it with your Facebook friends.

Vic Welper can use your help with Macker court sponsors. We have 15 paid court sponsors so far and the goal is 36.  Vic also mentioned that we lost a few regular court sponsors so we will need to make those up this year.  If you know of a business person please ask if they would like to sponsor a court for $300. Vic has details if you need them.

Dave Poland reminded everyone about help needed for carrying the flag and passing out flags in the Dogwood Parade on April 30th. We will meet at Madison Park at 9:15 that morning.  With less trees at Madison Park this year, we should be able to find each other easier.

Carlos Fernandez updated the Club on the Honor Flight. The 35th Honor Flight will take off for Washington this Thursday (April 22) and it will have our very own Skippy Rueter on board. God help the flight attendants. I am sure Skip will provide his own drink but he will need their help with the ice needed.

The 90th Convention of the Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs will be held in St. Charles, Illinois June 9 thru June 12. The event will be held at Pheasant Run Resort. If interested in going, hotel reservations need to be made by May 10th. For more information, contact Joel Koch.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Rich Howell and his family. Rich lost his mother last week.

Line of the Week

The line goes to Jared Haugh who, after mentioning the good fortune of Rick Gengenbacher's daughter, said

 - "obviously, the talent in that family skipped a generation"
Exchange Minute

Don't forget the Dogwood Parade!

Dogwood

Once again, the Quincy Exchange Club will head the annual Dogwood Parade down Maine Street on Saturday, April 30. We'll gather at 24th and Maine about 9:15 a.m. and kick-off around 9:30 or so.

Dave Poland has done his usual fine job of coordinating our participation with local Boy and Cub Scouts carrying our large American Flag while we hand out thousands of small flags to kids of all ages along the parade route.

This is a family event, so feel free to bring your kids and grandkids to help distribute the flags. It makes for a nice stroll from 24th and Maine down to 6th where the parade disbands.

As mentioned last week, Time Out Teddy will also be there to "help". Let's hope for good parade weather - not too hot, not too cold, but at least dry. Good weather always makes for a bigger crowd along the parade route and we can easily hand out 6-7,000 flags on a good day!

Plan now to help out on the 30th!
